CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT SEASON REACHES HALFWAY POINT SATURDAY AT PERRIS!
(Torrance, CA, June 28, 2016) The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will reach the halfway point of its 2016 season this Saturday night, July 2nd, at Perris Auto Speedway. The CLS will be joined by the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars and The PAS Young Gun and Senior Sprints. In addition to the racing, the City of Perris will be presenting the biggest and best Fireworks show in Riverside County.
As has been the case throughout most of the campaign, veteran driver Alex Grigoreas of Upland leads the CLS championship standings going into the ninth race of the year. The affable driver carries a 61-point advantage over “2015 Rookie of the Year,” Pat Kelley of Chino. San Bernardino’s James Heling, who has been lurking around the top all season long, is currently third with Darren Hillberg of Corona and Anaheim’s Dale Gamer rounding out the top five.
In addition to leading the standings at the halfway marker, Grigoreas also leads the series in main event wins with three. He has recorded victories in three of the first four races of the season at El Centro, Ventura and Santa Maria. However, he has not won since April 16th. Madera’s Charlie Caraccilo has two wins and is the only driver other than Grigoreas to have multiple victories this year. Three-time series champ Bobby Michnowicz if Lomita, Doug Nunes of Kingsburg and Kelley have one win each.
Saturday’s race will be the second and final appearance of 2016 for the CLS at its former home track. Nunes won the first race at The PAS five weeks ago.
Lakewood 15-year-old Wyatt Downing still holds down the top spot in the “Rookie of the Year” chase. San Diego State senior Cody Nigh of Camarillo trails the leader by 35-points. Another teen from Lakewood, Aiden Lange, is third and is 55-points behind Downing.
Spectator gates will open two hours earlier than normal on Saturday at 3:00 PM. There will be an on track autograph session and games for the kids with the drivers for early arrivals. Original Tommy Hamburgers and Pinks Hot Dogs will be available at the track on Saturday. Racing will start at 7:00.
There will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The event will not sell out and everybody will get in. City of Perris residents who show a driver’s license with a Perris address or a Perris utility bill with an id get in for free. Adult tickets are $25.00 and $5.00 for children in general admission. Reserved seats are $30.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids. Current military members with proper id and teens 13-18 with their school id will get general admission tickets for just $5.00. Children 5 and under are free.
After Saturday in Perris, the CLS will get right back on the track on July 9th at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway. It will be the only time all season that the CLS races on back to back weekends.
