Guys-

I have a responsibility to this film and the people that wish to see it, as well as the makers, and the sender too.

I will be leaving the Oct 23 postings on for now,----But I must reload them when I can, the old slow way. Each reload will replace the old one. It will take a few days.

Sometimes it's like I'm on a 'time travel magic carpet ride', and I'm not in charge of the schedule.

Visitors from Auto Racing Memories this is the video with Joe Lehman #6 and Bob Moberly #121. I tried to paste it on that forum. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks. It starts out with Bob Moberly and then somewhere about 4:12 is where Joe and Bob are at. Thanks for visiting. These videos are made possible in part to Brian Satterwhite or Brian26 on here.

1965 was the invasion of the Okies. If you look at the qualifying sheet it was the first year with all the stars from Oklahoma.

The film titled "1961 Hutchinson Nationals Part 1 - Dwane Wolfe col." starts out with the time trials ran on Saturday when the cars had their regular numbers. #29 Frank Lies and #7 Nut Cokeley, both of whose cars were owned by Cliff Durr, a car that I can't read the number on and then car #28 driven by J. D. Cox, another car I can't make out and #17 Gene Coffman, #15 Bill Nelson, a car I can't make out and then #35 George Witzke, #10 Lee Salman and #65 Reuben Loepp. The first car on the track is #27 Jerry Collins then #28 J. D. Cox, then #78 Jerry Everhart. The next car (white) lined up on the infield is #24 Gene Potts. Then is #51 Dick Hendershot, au unidentified #26, #7 driven by Roy Bryant, the black #62 driven by Bill Curless, #70 Verne Morton, #73 Paul Befort, #31 Jack Walker, #2 I think is Dick Ungar.

From here on, this film was taken on Sunday. #79 Verne Morton, #81 Don Graves, #9 Ralph Cole, #31 Jerry Collins, #21 Francis Kingan, 5 Charlie Lutkie,

The film titled "1961 Hutchinson Nationals Part 2 - Dwane Wolfe col." was taken at those nationals but the film is so fuzzy that I identify anyone for certain. There is what I think is a car #62 racing by in the north turn and, if that is the correct number, then the driver would have been Melvin Herrell.

The film titled "1962 Nationals Dwane Wolfe col." was indeed, taken at the 1962 Nationals. The cars appear with their regular numbers in time trials but have the flypaper numbers on them by Sunday. The cars that are easily recognizable in this film are: #17 Ted Maupin in a car owned by Roy Pulver, #36 Henry Ellington, #15 Bill Nelson in a car owned by Bob Garner, #11 Grady Wade in the Nance car, #24 Charlie Lutkie, #50 Melvin Harrell, #21 Tommy Bell, #17 Doran Raine, Jr., #15 Gene Angel, (that is Bob Garner leaning in to talk to Bill Nelson in the black car lined up next to Gene Angel's #15 in the fourth heat race), Nelson is then shown after winning the trophy dash in the #14, the white car making the victory lap with the checkered flag is #57 Bill Smith having won the Semi-Nationals. Charlie Lutkie is shown starting on the pole of the 50-lap feature and, of course, winning it. That is car owner Al Davis in the dark shirt standing with Charlie at the end.

The film "Hutch Nationals 1962? Part 2 - Dwane Wolfe" were actually taken at the 1963 Nationals. Easily recognizable are #92 Jerry Kerstine, #29 Charlie Lutkie, #5 Harold Armstrong, #66 Dick Walker, #19 Ody Fellows, #24 Bob Peck, #1 Dale Reed (this is the same Hudson that Lutkie won the Nationals in the year previous), #11 Grady Wade, #54 Dave Ross, #70 Duane Cauley, #12 Wylan Cattrell, #32 Francis Kingan, and, of course, Forrest Coleman who won the race.

The "60's Nationals Part 5 -Dwane Wolfe" was also taken at the 1963 Nationals. Recognizable are #69 Jack Petty in George Hibbs' car, #9 Bob Roberts, #18 Shot Hampton (having hit the fence in the north end), #16 Gene Potts, #66 Dick Walker receiving trophy for winning Semi-Nationals, #54 Dave Ross #11 making up the front row of the 50-lapper, #29 Charlie Lutkie, and #53 Frank Lies.

Recognizable in the 1964 Jalopy Nationals Part 1 film are #93 Doug Hagan, #121 Bob Moberly, #78 Ronnie Murphy, #70 Bob Immesote, #53 Evard Humphrey, #6 Joe Lehman, the zebra stripped #32 driven by John McGee, #3 H. A. Ratzlaff, #86 Jay Schrock and #16 Gene Potts.

Recognizable in the 1964 Jalopy Nationals Part 2 film are semi late models #80 Vester VanSickle, #21 H. R. McCarl and #65 John Reeves (crashed in pole by stage). Lined up on the front straightaway for the third hear race are: #20 Pinky Mullens, #57 Harlan Suedmeier, and #00 Don Shumard. Among the cars going around can be seen the #98 driven by Don Spreier. The flagman is Al Alexander. Roy Bryant can been seen climbing out the passenger window of the Lawrence-Miller-owned #7 after winning the trophy dash and then excepting the trophy from one of the race queens. The #12 was driven by Wylan Cattrell. The #18 semi-late spinning through the infield was driven by Gilford Shirley. #46 was driven by driven by Gilbert Story. #9 was Mel Montgomery. Of course, the winner was Roy Bryant.

In the 1965 Jalopy Nationals film, the fourth heat race is shown lined up on the racetrack and some of the cars easily visible are #28 Charlie Pitts, #68 David Flatt, Jr., #22 Bob Salem, #19 Cleman Humphrey, #54 Bill Lewis, #55 Frank Lies, #112 Evard Humphrey, #45 Jerry Douglas, #7 Roy Bryant, and #5 Bob Reynolds.

Some of the film "1959 Kansas Racing" was taken at the Hutchinson Nationals that year. Note there is a car that has a letter F on the door in place of a number. Only the fastest 100 cars in time trials that year were issued numbers. The next several were to be alternates and were issued letters instead of numbers. The first alternate was assigned the letter "A" so this car "F" would have been the 106th fastest qualifier and the sixth alternate.

Parts 1 and 2 of the 1957 Kansas Drivers Revised films are narrated by the late Gary Virden. Gary, along with his late brother, were the official track photographers at 77 Speedway at Arkansas City, Kansas. Gary's car and driver identification is right on the mark and I can add very little too it. Gary was a son-in-law of car owner Lawrence Brooks who owned the "8"Ball" car that Will Forrest and Orval Beckel drove. Brooks also owned the car that Stanley Trahern qualified second fastest for the 1962 Hutchinson Nationals and started outside pale sitter Charlie Lutkie in that event. Brooks is referred to in these films as "Grandpa Brooks" as Gary was narrating the films for his children and grandchildren who were thus descendants of Brooks.

These films were made from short segments of 8mm film that had been spliced together not necessarily in chronological order.

Part 1 was taken at the Cowley County Fairgrounds at Winfield, Kansas on Memorial Day, 1958. Gary mentions a #18 Buick there. That was owned by Jim McMillan and driven that day but Jack Walker both of Wichita.

Part 2 begins with footage from the Hutchinson Nationals in 1962. It then moves to 81 Speedway for scenes from 1963 and 1964. The semi-late model footage was taken at 81 Speedway in 1964. One of the semi-late models briefly seen there but not identified is the #17 Plymouth of eventual 1964 semi-late model points champion Roy Andrews.

The scene then moves to 77 Speedway at Ark City in 1958 before ending up with scenes taken there in 1957.

The thing that gets me is the lack of a crowd at 77 Speedway. Most photos etc the stands are packed back in the day at these kind of races. Must have been something else going around town or something?

I discussed the poor attendance with Gary Virden once. He said that most of the races at 77 Speedway were run on Friday nights with very poor lighting. (The only time I ever went was on a Friday night. I was too young to drove to Ark City myself and that was the only time that my father took me.) Gary said there was always a car shortage. The drivers had a meeting with the promoter about that one night. According to Gary, K. O. Christian spoke up saying that he had nine cars he could bring but he couldn't find enough tow cars! I've also talked with the promoter's widow. She said the racetrack was a financial looser from day one.

In the first paragraph you state that you do not recognize the car after #15 Wild Bill. The pink #54 is David Ross. I remember as a youngster the two pink cars of David Ross and Larry Torson #55. I think they raced together often. I was always amaized by the small size of thier cars (compared to the norm) and the small roll bars on Larry's 55. What ever happened to Larry Torson? When did he quit racing? You probably posted something on him already and I may have missed it. Thanks for the great coverage. Steven Schrater
