I'm definately dating myself but in the early to mid 60's a driver named Sonny Helms raced the midwest with IMCA (when they were known for their sprint car racing) was killed in a supermodified in Bloomfield Iowa.

although these two made a name for themselves their careers were cut short.
whatever you called him, the preacher, or the great G.P. gary patterson left us too soon.
another great was sidlined with injuries that ended his racing career at age 35 although he lived for many years after and tried to return to driving he was never the same. marshall sargent died doing what he loved. fishing in mexico in 1990.
tim richmond
bobby hamilton
steve park has never been the same
around here in the san jose area we started running a race in 1954 as a memorial for a young local standout killed while chasing the dream back east. we ran it untill the last track in town folded in 1999. we will run a sprint car race for the first time again this year in his honor at ocean speedway in watsonville. his name was johnny key.

I know he wasn't injured but what happened to Mark Kinser? He was always one of my favorites and then he wasn't on the road anymore.

Chuck Ward showed flashes of brilliance during his brief career. Check out his stats from Central PA in 1987.

One that comes to mind > One of the ORIGINAL OUTLAWS from N CALIF > Was Gary Patterson {the PREACHER} > I was at the Calistoga race when he lost his life . By avoiding another car he took the wall & lost his life.Others that come to mind 4 me are Bobby Davis jr , Bobby[scruffy] Allen . Also remember that there are lots of great shoes past & present that really never get the GOOD SHOT to do what they can do best. If it was easy everyone would do it ::: Dryslk

I heard Marshall threw himself into the jaws of a hungry Great White replete with the knowledge that Mike and Mark both had become two of the steamiest piles of crap on the planet!
The Johnny Key...what memories! TMAC in 1991, Nick's 6th, Scott Ludhorff (where the hell is he? Hopefully not a victim of the same fate as David Castro!!!), Chargin' Chuck Miller...

Steve King was a big loss in our area. Great guy on and off the track.
