http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guide/sore-muscles-keep-exercising This is a web MD article that I think does a great job of explaining the causes of muscle soreness after a workout when you are first starting out. It isn't an excuse to take a day off. The article makes a great point about sticking with light activities and even adding them. Things like doing chores around the house, going on walks, or doing some rearranging out in the garage. This more quickly alleviates the issues. Soreness is expected and shows you put the work in. The muscles will adapt.

Diet tip that made a huge difference for me in losing weight: Sleep is very dehydrating. Before you eat anything in the morning, or take in coffee, drink an 8 once glass of water. Two things you will notice. 1. That groggy morning feeling seems to disappear without the caffiene of coffee. 2. It seems to stimulate hunger for good wholesome foods. I am also a believer in taking that glass before supper. It is good for you and helps regulate overeating. You feel full faster. (The stuff I have picked up through the years just sort of being in the game. Some of it works, some of it doesn't. Part of the process.) It seems like I am getting a lot more mail from veteran racers who want to shed weight. So I'll try to stick to that focus as much as I can. Russ

A lot of my racer friends in the non-professional ranks are telling me that they got lazy during the over long winter and say they are too fat for their liking. I am telling you that Racers Workout is not actually what you need first thing. First we need to establish nutritional habits that you all can work with for life. Not a diet, a way of eating that fully satisfies our energy and taste needs. I'll send you the Top Fuel Nutrition Guide from Racers Workout for Free no strings attached. Email me at [email protected]. Tell me you saw this post on Hoseheads and I'll email the PDF of Top Fuel. It will make a huge difference for you in finding/maintaining a healthy wait WITHOUT WORRY; exercise or no exercise. It is different way of looking at food. My thanks to you all for all the support and great feed back you all have been sending. Russ

Travis Rilat is back! Report from the Devils Bowl in Mesquite Texas. (This is a reprint from my report on RussBohaty.com. I'd link to it but I haven't figured out how yet. Hey Everyone, I am proud and excited to report that Sprint's Travis Rilat has taken a monster step in his comeback from last summer's injuries. Last night at Devil's Bowl in Mesquite, Travis raced competitively for the first time in about 9 months. He started 16th in the feature race. He looked pretty damn good but he suffered a broken wheel. Jason Johnson was your winner. So proud of my guy. He has no doubt that his attention to fitness and durability prior to the accident not only prevented worse injury, but gave him a baseline of total body strength for a quicker fuller recovery. Makes me excited to know the impact we can all have with each other out in the racer fitness community. www.devilsbowl.com is the link to the track. If you are ever in North Texas, come out and check out the action. We'll meet up for a beer and trade some stories.

More on Travis Rilat's return to competition. (This is a pre publication version of what will be on my blog http://RussBohaty.com tomorrow and is for all the folks who have been asking about Travis Rilat and his progress. I wrote a couple days ago about my friend Travis Rilat's return to Sprint Racing at The Devil's Bowl in Mesquite, Texas on Friday night. For all of us who have been watching his recovery from near fatal injuries last year, it was a very positive night. This is definitely one of those subjects that I want to share information for all the fans and well wishers but making one thing clear: Travis' great progress is testimony to his heart to stick with it and overall dedication to his personal fitness through the years, and not anything I did in working with him over time. The whole experience made everyone believe there is hope for a full successful return to consistent great results. What have I seen We have prayed, worked out, talked this thing through for 9 months now. He has consulted with Doug Wolfgang and taken it 1 day at a time. Friday night, I saw signs of the great race driver in Travis Rilat. It started in the 1st B main 15 laps. He started 3d roll inside. The green flag dropped and he was on it. I could see him starting to get his confidence back as he started to pass car after car to take the lead and head on to take thecheckered flag an get the WIN. I knew right there and then he was back and this was no cross his fingers and hope effort. He said he felt fine not tired at all and finally felt his body in tune with that race car. We knew it. He started 17th in the feature and from the dropped of the green he was on a mission. It was a helluva race up/down in/out passing cars at will. He even went off the track in turn 2, but brought it back on, and dropped a couple of spots but kept on going. He finally got back on track after a couple of yellows at the end and finished 5th. All an all it was a great race for him and I believe he is moving in the right direction of once again being the great race car driver he is. We have a long ways to go. The workouts are gonna get harder and his intensity will improve because he now knows he has still got what it takes to win and that is what it is all about. Winning is an attitude that has to be earned and learned. In order to do that your body and spirit need to be in tunne with your heart and mind. David did beat Goliath in some ways on Friday evening. The mighty challenges like the giant, will crumble and fall for all of us. Mostly we just gotta stay it another day. Then the next.

Racers, This was from one of my friends a week or so ago talking about how he approaches interval training. If are someone who exercises, or is looking to start, to improve your track performance. You need interval training principals in your workout. The principal is to build total body and muscle stamina through changing the stamina requirements on your muscles by changing pace during cardio or weight workout. You will notice a huge improvement in your fitness through interval training. It's big part of my Racers Workout program. Before you try it on your own, get with me so we can tailor it to your fitness level. Here is what he wrote about his own experiences. (Pay close attention to his approach. Jason nails the principals of interval training): "I don't mean to turn this into a post for exercise equipment, but something else that I've found extremely useful is an interval timer. I purchased one from gymboss.com. I had been using it for tabata intervals but lately I've been training for a PT test that includes a 1.5 mile run. I started out running at an uncomfortable pace for 2 minutes with a 1 minute recovery walk interval for 8 sets. Each day I run I subtract 5 seconds from the recovery walk. Currently I'm at 25 seconds for recovery, my goal is to get the recovery walk down to 10 seconds and increase the sets to 10. I think this has helped my overall conditioning more than anything else I've tried. Also just my 2 cents again but one thing I've learned training for this test is that running on a treadmill is not nearly as beneficial as real running, I feel this applies to any machine in general. I should of been running outside in the snow, haven't I learned anything from the hundreds of times I've watched Rocky IV?

http://russbohaty.com/new-video-some-nuts-and-bolts-of-working-out-for-racing/ Hey everyone. I dropped my computer moving carelessly through the house middle of last week. Set me back some. The link is to a video with Travis Rilat demonstrating some important arm shoulder endurance exercises he uses. It is about 6 minutes long.

I got a record number of emails from Hoseheads users last week and they were super supportive. This continues to be just an awesome place. Reminder, you can always email me at [email protected] and I'll try to give you all the answers and resources I can in the area of elite endurance for your racing. I am up to a couple hundred emails a week since the launch, but I will get to yours as quick as my fingers will allow. Thanks again! Russ

http://budurl.com/kbb5 After a run of people trying the Top Fuel Nutrition Guide, I got a run of people wanting recipe ideas. Be warned, I am not on anyone's short list to be a contestant on Top Chef. The link is to a desert that tastes great and satisfys my Racers without weighing them down.

I am reading some lousy weather reports for the North this week-end. I hope everyone gets their races in.

Looking for contributors to new online racing fitness and peak performance magazine

Hi Hosehead Racers,

I have been swamped lately working on Racers Workout buyer consults, plus my blog has been disabled due to tech stuff that I have no clue about. If you have noticed the issues, I apologize for the state of things over there. I believe it will be up and running correctly on Monday with all newly updated content.

Currently, I am launching a new service to my subscribers that will be really cool. It will be an online Racing Fitness and Peak Performance magazine. I have lined up a great group of writers to get you the best most current information out there. It will come free and direct to everyone's inbox. I'll still be writing regularly for my blog and the magazine but this will be even better than just having me write all the time

I have figured out after 8 weeks on here and working with Racers at other forums, that you all have tremendous knowledge on the subject of racing, racing fitness, nutrition and peak performance. Quite often, I am learning more from you all, than I am teaching you. I want to work with you and have you contribute as writers for the magazine. This thing will have a Racer's knowledge and feel, for the many Racers who will be reading.

I am super excited about it. I am going to be looking for contributors to write, do videos, or maybe do audios about racing, health, fitness and racing performance. You can make a few bucks while promoting yourself, your team, a product or whatever is dear to you. I really want the Racers in there talking about things that are important to other Racers. I want the writing/videos/audio to be informative, but not too formal.

If anyone is interested in being a regular contributor or would like a free subscription, email me at [email protected]. I want you to not worry about what content you might do. Just make it race related, preferably racing fitness related. But I am pretty open at this point.

Russ

Hey everyone. It was an exciting night last night a Darlington. Kasey seems like he is rounding into mid-season form. I felt like he had the best car on the track, but fell a little short. That's racing. Especially on the track too tough to tame.

Anyways, I wanted to share this recent article from an up and coming trainer from Ohio named Tyler. I wanted to make sure the blog had more guys who studied the science of exercise on an academic level contributing valuable information. As many of you may know, I got into personal training out of love for fitness and sports, but I didn't start out with a focused academic degree. In his first post, Tyler talks about Racers who are just starting out on the path to getting fit and provides some strategies to make it a good start. I hope you'll go visit Tyler's Facebook page which is linked at the end of the article too. He is one to watch for the future in this business.

Subject: Overcoming Day After Race or Workout Pain

http://budurl.com/55lu

Hi Hosehead Racers,

Tyler Benson is a bright guy that has one heck of a future in the racing fitness business. Check out his strategies for overcoming soreness the day after a race or hard workout. He is hopefully going to become a regular contributor to my peak performance racing fitness blog.

I am reading about bad weather again up in the upper midwest. I hope you all don't get washed out again.

Hi Hosehead Racers,

I want to thank you all again for being so active in emailing me with your questions. I have met some super cool racers on here. Please feel free always to get with me at [email protected] if you need resources or questions answered to get you fitter and performing better on the track and off too. This was an article from my blog today that boils down maybe the biggest reason so many people struggle with weight. Really it is about not knowing the simple truths of food.

I hope that everyone is safe. Another weekend of unspeakable tragedy in our country due to horrible weather. My prayers go out to everyone.

I wanted to keep everyone updated on the ongoing efforts to help tornado victims in the southern states. The story of Jamie McMurray returning to his hometown of Joplin really got to me. Racing and athletes in general are really stepping up. Makes me proud of everyone. Whatever you can do to help, do it. It all counts.

Hi Hosehead Gang,

Say you want to start getting fit, or you want to ramp up your current level of fitness, but aren't a big weights, or gym person, what can you do to see massive benefits on the track through exercise? It's a question I get a lot.

The one activity that I think you should choose is running with an intervals focus. I talk about it today on my Motorsports Racing Fitness Magazine. Stop over and leave a comment. Make sure you sign up for that free subscription that comes directly to your inbox. That way you don't miss any of the free resources and info to help you transform your results to serious butt kicking.

I wanted to alert everyone to a series started Monday on my Auto Racing Fitness Magazine about mental mastery and peak performance. It starts with a guest columnist named Garrett talking about his journey into the sport of racing, then he gives some great tips on gaining sponsors (a question I get a lot). The series runs through next Friday. Make sure to check it out and get your free subscription to the magazine. It comes direct to your inbox. Russ

Fitness in sprint car racing does not seem hugely important. How do you explain overweight flabby drivers, some of whom smoke, being some of the top drivers in the sport?

Wingtree,

I have an answer I think. Can you give us some specific examples of names of Racers you are talking about?

I can give you a more complete answer at that point.
