NHL is broadcast on Fox sports which is hardly a third rate cable network.
VS is owned by comcast which I guess you can call third rate but they broadcast a tiny fraction of the hockey that Fox does along with the canadian networks.
So hockey is broadcasting on at least three networks and twenty broadcasts or so a night for 82 games per team per season.
If you want to compare say VS hockey broadcasts vs Speeds Outlaws broadcasts, I think youre comparing apples to apples but the big difference is that the hockey is live and the racing is usually tape delayed. Why not broadcast a tape delayed 'stream' on USAC? that would alleviate a lot of the problems with connectivity.
Also, think about this. Speedway Grand Prix along with local speedway meetings are not only attended by thousands of people but broadcast live in Norway, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Britain, Wales and Scotland. New Zealand speedways bigger meetings are also broadcast live on Sky Sports. I cant even begin to tell you why speedway can be successful as a broadcast medium in other countries while some of the best sprint and midget racing in the world cant even get a live stream on the internet in this country.

To Clarify- I am speaking to the national contracts, not the local team contracts. The Ducks and Kings have contracts with the local Fox affiliates. The NHL's national contract is with VS and possibly the NHL network once again; and a select few games on NBC.
The NHL used to have a national contract with ESPN, just as USAC did back in the day with Thursday Night Thunder. Even the NHL couldn't pull the ratings for ESPN to want to keep them.
I do like the idea of the tape delay stream though! It may not be quite as exciting as watching it live, but I do enjoy getting my videos from loud pedal and watching them- even though I was at the race track.

Actually thats not correct. The NHL lost the deal with ESPN when the players went on strike a few years back. ESPN got left holding the empty bag for that season and they chose to not work with the NHL. Then a couple years went by with ESPN not even able to broadcast highlights of the NHL and they went back to the NHL to work out a deal to show highlights.
Lets face it dirt track racing never did and never will bring in enough viewers to make it viable on a national network. It will always be a second rate sport in most peoples eyes. They just dont get it.
As for the FOX News viewership numbers, I think its a horrible indicator of how ignorant and screwed up we have become as a country that ANYONE is willing to watch that make believe fictional nonsense. You cant fix stupid thats for certain. Soon as I hear someone quote an idiot from Fox I just tune them out as I already know they are batshit crazy.
Cheers!

You know its interesting that when your a kid in school most students are really lackluster and lets face it pretty dang ignorant about all things around them. In school if they are dumb they dont dare speak up and get called out as an idiot by the teacher or intelligent students. So during those formative years the ignorance level spewed is pretty muted from these folks. Then a funny thing happens, they turn 18 and get the right to vote even though they are the same ignorant, misguided C and D grade students they have always been. Now suddenly because they are afforded the right to 1 single vote they are SURELY an expert by now and set out to spew their ignorance as often as possible. You hear these morons on the internet, talk radio, phony news networks etc. Its a shame really, I wish they had to take a basic litmus test before getting to cast a vote. My how that would change politics.
Cheers!

I liked this so much, I thought I'd just put it up again.

Here, here!
Well, Kenny, you've gone and done it now. I don't know who those other two people are on here that bad mouth the American way of life but they'd better duck and cover.
I suppose after polluting this message board with commie propaganda you're off to Tucson for the Western World to enjoy some of the freedoms you so justly undeserve. Just remember, everyone's packing heat down there in the old pueblo so don't go pissing anyone off with your anti-establishment rhetoric. Wonder how many sitting in the stands will be strapped?
In the mean time I'll try to come up with something non-offensive to say about sprint car racing. Anyone want to discuss tire pressures?
Everything you know is wrong.
