Guess the first narrow body I seen or heck just remember was either #63 I.L. Smith from Burk or #33 Bobby Wainscott Holiday Gulf car.
Mike, Your right did not realize that but they were really popular at Lawton.
Ya know some cars that really stands out in my mind and I thought was pretty cool then when I was around 12 or so and it seemed like that year most everyone had really good looking cars at Lawton I think it was in 75 , Billy Brown had that yellow #11 with all the design/pinstriping detail on it and Charles Yarbrough had that 95 car red/orange with same type pinstriping design on it and Jerry Bennet had the 96 Sprite car which was Green to match the Sprite bottle Sponsorship and it was really different and went against the luck deal with green and then you threw in Dallas guys like Bobby Marshall with the 72 car that was really a nice looking car and Ed French with the 7777 car and the first ever Sprint tail tank car I ever seen , it was really nice and not sure if Bubs Fenner #67 from Wichita Falls with the red, white and blue flagged themed car was that year or not, maybe that was 74? and Dewayne Howell #49 had a really nice looking 6 Cyl. that year as well , the wedge shaped body and Dewayne was pretty tough in that class but Ken Hailey and I think Fred Dixon #7 from Norman was the ones to beat in the 6 Cyl. stuff and even Randall Busbee had a nice looking red and Blue car with that pinstriping design as well that year , sure remember lots of nice looking cars that year.
Ya know looking at that pic above , that would be one of the many questions I would ask James Skinner , did he sell that car to Sherman French in Lawton? , I remember going by Sherman's house and looking at his car and remember it looking similar to that car in the pic above , why it stands out so is the radius rod pick up points down under the driver compartment and how it was enclosed in with Body Panels. I think Sherman crashed and destroyed that car off Turn 3 (if it is the one) when he jumped a wheel of Buster Daughtery from Grandfield one Sat. night, I believe it destroyed the car , remember going by his house the next week and it was bent up pretty bad and Sherman was not one to put a lot of effort into his racing and I believe that was the end of his driving.
Clifford Cherry and his dad Pete tried to get him to buy or build a Late Model but he did not ever do it. Guess it was to much work , he was good with the $$$ as his family had plenty of that, just did not want to put in the effort that went along with racing.
Mike , Do you remember Clifford , he was quite entertaining to watch on and off the track in full bodied stuff, some of those full bodied guys who ran come to mind Wayne Wickens , 2 Poolaws Mike and Billy ? , David Newsom (Garlands Boy) , Lister Bros. from Chickasha.
Do you remember the first black buy who ran at Lawton in the Hobby Stock class back in the mid 70's cannot think of his name, I think car no. was 70?
