I agree that he would not have been in the top 10 at Knoxville.
My question is.......would the 69k's hauler be able to make the round trip to Knoxville? That thing has to be 30 years old!

How many 82 year old crew chiefs do long haul traveling? NONE
& Dream Team picks the BIGGEST races in the area, & consistently wins
Whattaya want already?

Actually during a monthly Eastern Motorsports Racing Museum round table Davey Brown got a twinkle in his eye when the mention of a trip to the Nationals came up.....he stated that he'd be up for it but would like to go a week or two in advance to have the best chance at winning. So I'm not sure the 82 year old is holding the team back at all.

I gotta agree with Johnny Yuma on this one. I also believe as I think you should because we both watched Saturday's PPV Blazer, that Lance was more than dominant. My point is he was special ALL over the track and carrying that forward to Knoxville would have easily made him a Top Contender. Lance has lots of laps there in the past but not with this team, this team has gelled or is it jelled like none other he has been a part of I feel and he was with many good ones. Lance's laid back attitude along with the not get too excited Donnie Kreitz and the whatever Genius of Davey Brown seems to be perfect. They show-up to win and they often do, they shake hands and go home, they are consumate pros. This is what I take from a distance, although I have seen all 3 of these stars do their magic in the past it was never as a team and boy are the Outlaws happy about that.....
|
Absolutely decimated the field at Port Royal which to me was no surprize....really....my friends watching will back up that I predicted a no contest for the 69K team. What makes them a potential contender at the Nationals is Davey Brown, Sr.! He's been there, done that, and he's as sharp as he ever was! And the combined experience of Kreitz and Dewease makes for a one off of each which resembles both their prime abilities. But....no show, no way to know.

Dirt late models never get no love.

Some people really like them, including all the fans sitting near me at Port for Tusky 50
Not my cup of team tho...

Never seen the Port Royal track. What would regulars guess the crowd at for a big race like this?

I'm horrible at estimating anything including someone's age or a head count , so I'll leave fan estimate to someone else. I will say this . The main grandstand runs from the entrance of turn 1 to exit of turn 4. It was a transplant from Daytona. The entire stands were basically shoulder to shoulder. The infield with exception of the area near turns 3 and 4 was packed. Even Kerry Madsen commented on how full the infield was. I've been going to port on and off for 52 years. Largest crowd I've ever seen. Maybe someone associated with the speedway had an estimated head count.

You know I never pass up a chance - I'm a Davey Brown homer - you might go to see your favorite driver, I go to see Davey Brown:
How many 82 year old crew chiefs are on their hands and knees massaging a race car at the track?
How many 82 year old crew chiefs build 'their own' engines?
How many 82 year old crew chiefs walk to the infield during the race to listen to their motor?
How many 82 year old crew chiefs have been winning races every year for more than 60 years?
Only one - Davey Brown.
You can take the best 10 crew chiefs of all time, in all of racing, mix them together and you still don't have a Davey Brown. Yep, there were and are lots of good ones, but to the best of my knowledge, none into their 80's and for 60+ continuous years - not Carl Kinser, not Ray Evernham, not Smokey Yunick, not Kenny Woodruff - heck, Harry Hyde's career was not even half of Davey Brown's.

we guessed:
2,500 in the infield
7,000 in the stands
500 in the pits
dozens of carnies might have been handed comp tickets...who knows...
killer crowd hosted by some of the best people involved in Posse Racing...

I thought I saw where they themselves estimated about 10,000 people, so you're spot on.

With the stands added last year, I thought the place seated 9000 now. Could be wrong but that number sticks in my head for some reason. I went out to my car during the econo-late heats and these 2 guys were just showing up and asked me where was a good place to sit. I just laughed. Nearly every seat was filled by 5.

Each grandstand at Port seats 3100 people. At least I know the original one on the turn one end seats 3100.
I'm guessing they 3/4 full (4500).
Infield probably around 2500.
Pits probably around 1000.
I'd guess 9000 aprox. since my estimating is on the low side.

Let's at least be real here. If there "woulda" been a $50,000. to win "porch" race in PA the week of the Nationals, and a team "coulda" won it, then yeh they "shoulda" stayed home. That's a no brainer. But there wasn't, so what's your reasoning mean?
|
Never mind, you're totally missing my point. I wasn't referring to a specific point in time (ie Nationals time) during the year, rather I was referring to the course of a season in general. But again, never mind - I'll just go back and sit on my porch.

|
Davey said long ago and still maintains to this day that his dyno is the backstretch at Williams Grove and it isn't just a funny tongue in cheek statement, it's 100% true. He often wonders out to the infield at Williams Grove during hotlaps and the reason for that is to observe how the motor is running. Sprint car racing may never again have a mind like Davey Brown. He's truly the last of a dying breed.

Don't have a clue about specific numbers, but they announced it was the biggest crowd ever. I don't know how fans in the middle of the infield could see anything....
I thought I was way ahead of the game when I arrived at 1:30. Nope. Line for tickets was halfway to the street. By 2:30 it was out IN the street...
So glad a guy offered to sell me a reserved seat!!!!

Not a mistake.....they weren't there, so not a factor plain and simple. They (the 69k team) are the ultimate "porch" racers....therefore not to be mentioned in the same breath as those that competed at the Nationals!

Brian Brown, who has a habit of finishing 2nd to The Mighty Schatz at Knoxville Nationals, seemed pretty proud of 2nd & &7th at Tusky: http://www.openwheel101.com/Article/7444/brian-brown-good-showing-at-port-royal-tuscarora-50

Track personel told me they were expecting 10000 people just for the race. I think they got thst and then some. Dewease isn't my guy but for a 40 lap or longer race he's as good as anybody ever. We don't know what he would have done at knoxville but we'll see what he does against the outlaws here in a few weeks at the grove. My money is on Dewease holding another 50k check at the end of the evening. The nice thing about that is we won't have to debate.
If you remember Lance has had some good runs at knoxville in the 77 and the 88 and ran circles around Brian Brown Saturday night. We will never know for sure but we will know for sure in a few weeks if all the money in the world can compete with a light blue privately owned team with a now 17 race motor in the car. Good luck outlaws. You're gonna need it.

I wouldn't bet the farm on DeWease vs. Outlaws, but he could do it & I'd love to see it
No debate? Nah, if he wins, they'll sat Posse can beat Outlaws on home tracks, but can't travel....
