One of the things that I've had to get used to is more writing. This is one I wanted to share with the Racers out there. Basically it talks about how Fitness became mainstream in Racing. I am glad to see it. Tell me what you think. It was published on a blog called Home Workouts Guide and was originally written last August. I hope you all enjoy it. Russ Yesterday I had the opportunity to enjoy the Carquest Race at Michigan International Speedway in Michigan. My client NASCAR champion Kasey Kahne was the pole sitter and with him on the bubble in the shakeout of who will make the Chase, I knew that the race carried great weight for his season. The area that is my focus as Kasey’s personal trainer is to help him handle the physicality of the driving act for the 3 plus hours that is required. Until fairly recently, fitness and auto racing were not thought of as necessarily going together. The image of the good old boy who roles out of bed and jumps behind the wheel after a night of partying and heavy eating and races his tail off to victory is a quaint notion. The fact is, many of your top drivers at the highest level like NASCAR, Indy, Outlaw as well as your motocross, have fitness regimens that rival athletes in the major sports such as football. The idea hit the mainstream in 2005 when popular medical correspondent for CNN Dr. Sonjay Gupta ran a special on the extreme conditions endured by NASCAR drivers during a typical competitive ride. One observer noted to Dr. Gupta that the experience is like sitting in a sauna cranked up to over 100 for 3 hours with a roll of nickles grasped firmly in each hand. He came away more than impressed by the physical and mental demands of competitive racing. The profile looked at Rusty Wallace and Carl Edwards who was a newcomer at the time, and the athleticism required to compete in NASCAR. As the money and competitive pressure of large corporate sponsorship of teams has grown, so did the desire to look for whatever edge that could be found. It all actually predated 2005 and might have found it’s origins with the leadership of the great Dale Earnhardt. #3 was possibly NASCAR’s most popular driver ever and when he reached his 40s, he became a convert to fitness in preparing for races. He seemed to get better with age. Guys saw Dale do something and figured they had to keep up. What has ensued is nothing less than an arms race for every competitive advantage, meaning that guys train longer, harder and with more professional guidance than they ever have before. I have more recently taken the best of the best from my training of elite race car drivers and created “The Racers Workout” which aims to share the physical and mental exercises that make the difference in the drivers seat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu7aKVfZyr8&feature=related This is the first video in a 5 part series I did for my you tube subscribers. I'll post the rest throughout the week. Want to make sure that I don't get too ahead of myself talking too much about anything but the basics. The basics and mastering them are key to your success on the track. Same with fitness. I tried but was unable to embed the video on here. I am still pretty raw with computers. We're talking racing and fitness 24-7 on video there if you want to subscribe. Love to have you. Russ

Reprint of my article from last fall about the 2nd Golden Key to Health: Flexibility. I am having a hard time embedding videos, so for my Hosehead friends, I'll go through and simply paste you a short article on the subject of the moment. I hope you get some value out of it. Russ Over the last few years, it has been my privilege to work with elite athletes in various sports including ice hockey and more recently, professional racers like Kasey Kahne of NASCAR. As the work evolved, I began to contemplate how the whole idea of working out and training for car and motorcycle racers could be made into a program that would make the difference between winning and losing that is so very slight in those sports. I certainly did not invent the concept of fitness for race car and motorcycle drivers, but I felt very sincerely that I could help it evolve and make sense of it toward something very sport specific and user friendly. Out of that sprung the Racers Workout. With that background I wanted to begin to share concepts in articles to go along with the release of video behind the scenes excerpts from the production of the Racers Workout videos. The idea is to let everyone sample my training methods and get to know me. The reason that Kasey and I work so well together is that we have a certain comfort level and trust built over time. We need to have that rapport as well. We might never meet in person, but the fact is when you work hard doing what I ask, we have a relationship. You count on me to deliver a return on your sweat equity. So during that time and when you are behind the wheel we are tied to together. So I put those excerpts out there for you to watch and get to know me and my way of doing things. You'll hopefully see that I am no gimcrackery, straight to the point, and always respecting your time by getting you maximum return for effort invested. The first concept generally that I want to get across is breathing in the context of being more flexible. We stretch before we workout and we stretch on days we don't. In a car or on a motor cycle, we must be flexible to maintain comfort, prevent injury, promote durability and actually turn back the sands of time on the aging process. Stretching creates physical comfort and a deeper mental calm and focus necessary for success in any activity. Check out my video demonstration to see how I put the stretching and flexibility video together to work for my clients. Great story in Autoweek by Al Pearce about the Truck Race in Darlington and the win by my client and friend Kasey Kahne. Kasey has the will to win, but more importantly he has the will to PREPARE to win. That is inside all of us, we just need to focus in on our passions and go after it hard. Russ By AL PEARCE on 3/12/2011 Sprint Cup Series star Kasey Kahne is building quite a résumé in NASCAR's third-tier Camping World Truck Series. In his first--and likely only--Truck Series start of the season, Kahne ran off to a fairly comfortable win in Saturday afternoon's Too Tough To Tame 200 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. It was his third Truck Series win in only four career starts, two of the wins for team owner and fellow Cup driver Kyle Busch. Two of his three wins have come at Darlington, generally considered NASCAR most difficult track. The other was at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Four-time series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. was second, followed by defending series champion Todd Bodine, then Matt Crafton, James Buescher, Timothy Peters, Elliott Sadler, pole winner Cole Whitt, Johnny Sauter and David Starr. There were 10 caution flags for 44 laps and eight lead changes among four drivers. One of the cautions, for a three-truck wreck involving Johanna Long, Ricky Carmichael and Nelson Piquet Jr., turned into a red fag for 7 minutes, 37 seconds. Kahne, Bodine, Peters and Starr drove Toyotas, with Hornaday, Crafton, Buescher, Sadler, Whitt and Sauter in Chevrolets. Kahne led four times for 95 of the 147 laps. Whitt led twice for 30 laps, Sadler twice for 16 and Buescher once for six. A late-race caution bunched the field for a sprint to the finish, but Kahne was unchallenged in driving away to a 1.116-second victory. Crafton now leads the points by six over Whitt, seven over Peters, eight over Clay Rogers and nine over Sauter. Read more: http://www.autoweek.com/article/20110312/NASCAR/110319965#ixzz1Gm0DvFY9

The 4th Golden Key Did you know there is a right way to approach working out to get the max benefits and the key is understanding your target heart rate? As a fitness instructor, this is one of my favorites. Mostly because it is good for business. lol We delve deeply into this aspect in my Racers Workout program for 1 reason: it is a small thing that makes a huge difference in your outcome. Reminds me a little of the old story about the plant manager who hires a specialist to come in and fix a mechanical issue in the plant so it can get back up to producing. The specialist walks in, surveys the situation, and proceeds to an area where two pipes meet a few feet from the entrance to the plant. He pulls out a wrench, turns the big nut about a half a turn, and instantly the plant is back at full capacity. He then takes out an invoice pad and gives the top carbon to the plant manager: It reads "$20,000 due on receipt". The plant manager immediately is taken back by the bill. He looked the specialist in the eye and said: "I can't take this to my superiors for payment. You were only here less than 1 minute and besides, the bill isn't itemized." The specialist calmly takes the bill back and writes on it briefly and then presents it again to the plant manager. The bill reads: For time spent: $5 For knowing where to turn the wrench: $19,995 Moral of the story: There is no price too much for really good information of value. As a professional training racers in peak fitness for winning races, I thrive because that story is true. Here is your link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qe7tn5L54o&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

5th Golden Key to Health: Nutrition A friend of mine was an avid marathoner and cyclist. He always lived a very physical life. Yet he always seemed a little well, “portly”. I asked him one day if he felt like he was at a good weight. (My subtle way of broaching the subject of weight.) He told me something that stuck with me: “I can run 10 ks and marathons and bike 100 miles in a day no problem, but because my attention to nutrition is lax, I am simply a fat guy that can run or bike a long way." He got with it, and I worked with him on reducing drastically the amount of processed foods in his diet, and also worked with him on finding good supplements to make up for what he wasn't getting in his diet. He lost that 15 lbs he couldn't, he no longer has knee problems and his overall energy level is up. He is performing better everywhere too. Without mastering the 5th Golden Key, the rest are basically pointless. Check out this short video and also join my facebook fan page. I'll send you the Racers Workout Blueprint Top Fuel Nutrition guide for free. Russ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ6z0lT5svo&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Hey everyone, My guy Craig Dollansky was the World of Outlaw Sprint Series winner this weekend in Chico, California. Chalk up another one for a talented driver, who works hard at his craft. This is a driver that takes his fitness seriously too. A background story for you about Preparation: While out on the west coast the last 20 days, The Dollansky boys stay near a Golds Gym. Craig along with his brother Troy an son luke. They called me. Troy Dollansky asked me for some recommened work outs to get stronger and better for the races. They weren't interested in sitting around letting the competition get ahead of them. So I gave them the GUNS FROM HELL work. They loved it and the loved the results out on the track. I'll be damned if he didn't win that world of outlaw race saturday night. You wanna win races like the Dollanskys. That's what we're here for. This is a tough person's sport and we'll make you tougher and better. Here's the link to the article about Craig's win: http://www.woosprint.com/ Russ

Hi Racers, I wanted to wish you great success this weekend if you are competing. If you aren't, best in all your other endeavors. A friend of mine has a great motto that is so powerful. He says: "Now is a perfect time to turn it all around." When you think about it, what we have is where we are at right now. If you aren't where you want to be in any area of your life, it is fine. Just start on the new path right now and put the past away. The journey of many miles begins and is built with small consistent steps. Like the great baseball manager Sparky Anderson was fond of saying: "I don't live in the past, there's now future in it." As we get to know each other better, I'd like to share some more of my story and how making the commitment to start fresh in the moment really saved me and brought me to the exciting place of being here with all you racers. For now, just have a great weekend and I'll probably be on here tomorrow if anyone wants to chat about fitness or peak performance in general. Here's to winning! Russ

I like to call this post: Things change in a big way if you get your mind right. Back in a past life before I got serious into training, I was involved heavily in the "unreal" world of professional wrestling. Back in Minnesota, I was a ring announcer for the American Wrestling Alliance (AWA). I knew well known guys like Mean Gene Okerlund, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, and Curt Henning. I knew them very well. I met a lot of great people. But overall wrestling is an insanely tough unforgiving business that often leads huge burnout and many times serious post traumatic type difficulties among the wrestlers. Myself, I was involved in a lot of partying and not taking proper care of myself. The whole lifestyle and the people I was around was promoting a direction that was leading to a lot of dissatisfaction. I was medicating the deep seeded negativity for a temporary good time. Luckily I was able to take stock and decided what I wanted my ideal life to look like. I got brutally honest with myself about whether the path I was on was taking me there. I started a new journey towards exciting fun goals and even though it can be a long path with set backs, I would never trade it for the temporary highs of too many late nights with the wrong crowd. Racers Workout really is something special just like all the racers around the country who put it all on the line. It is for them. The thing that really makes it go is you. A racer who has that clear vision, is sticking with the right crowd of positive people and will do the work, will see indescribable gains in the gym and big time results on the track. The commitment to that new you starts now. You'll have more fun then any old over the top night with the wrong crowd of people holding you back. I promise you that. Best and we'll be talking soon, Russ

One of my facebook friends Ashley, has been sharing with me some insight into the practice of Yoga and the many physical, mental and emotional benefits. The thing that drew me in was the massive weight loss she had. (over 200 lbs). I get a lot of PMs from racers who are struggling with their weight. Yoga is not something I have ever tought or really done but I am really strongly considering sharing some ideas that would be tailored to athletes like you racers. This is from Ashley: Here is my perspective on Yoga and how it has dramatically changed me both physically and mentally: Mentally: 1.Stress level has been greatly reduced since I started doing this. 2.More mentally calm than I have ever been! My focus has sharpened up big time too! 3.More self-confident than ever and more appreciative of how I look now! 4. I look forward to doing this everyday, it makes me feel awesome! Physically: 1. More defined, sleeker body and muscle tone 2. My flexibility has dramatically improved 3. It has been a major factor in my massive weight loss!(203lbs to date!!!) 4. Since I have been practicing Yoga my breathing has gotten better, I dont get as winded when I go jogging or walking now! I'd love it if some of you would check out this short yoga video I picked from Youtube, give it a whirl and then share your results. If you can take one day a week and incorporate 15 minutes of yoga, I am betting you'll see some results that will make you want to do more. Check this out. If you are football fan, you'll recognize some of these guys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jClPFMmWMUw I'll be back with more as I talk with more with Ashley. Russ

The Day After: beating soreneess. I get a lot of feedback from racers who are followers of my training tips that even though they are feeling great and in better shape then they have been for a while, they still come away the day after first couple races, very sore. Basically there is no substitute for game competition. Yesterday during the Duke basketball game, their star freshman guard was playing his second game back after a long lay off. (like 3 months) The point was made that it doesn't matter how physically prepared you are, there is an element of the playing the actual sport that will leave some day after soreness. The issue is how to alleviate it so that it goes away as fast as possible and you get back to 100%. I advise my racers to take it head on. That means at the moment it is the worst: just getting out of bed. Two things you can do right away: stand in the room and do 50 knee lifts while you lower your elbows to the knees. This will get the blood rushing and will make a huge difference in recovery lag time. the other big one is to simply stay on your feet for quite a while doing odds and ends around the house. Don't sit down for a good half hour. I have noticed good reports from racers when they alter their habits right after waking up. Not saying you won't be sore, but the idea is to quickly regain the functionality you need with minimal discomfort. Try it and let me know what you think. Russ

Congratulations to Joey Saldana, The Brownsburg Bullet. Joey is a Kasey Kahne Race Team guy and a convert to the idea of being in great shape for peak results on the track. When I first started working with Kasey Kahne racing few years back, Kasey said the Joey said he never got tired in a racecar. I said we'll see about that. As Kasey and the team started working out it did take Joey long to hire a trainner back in Indiana where he lives an he has been at it ever scince. Joey was good before, no doubt about it, but now he goes hard and he's crashed some and he is getting older. He told me last month in Houston that he trains harder now then ever. It shows up on the track. One more thing on Joe that is a vital lesson if we wanna win more in anything: to be a consistant winner in sprint car racing it takes COMMITMENT, DEDICATION and GREAT WORK ETHIC. JOEY has all that and is a great kid too. Here's a great video interview recorded after his win. http://www.woosprint.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=777:saldana-holds-off-meyers-in-tulare&catid=152:featured-news-tabs
