Rick Unger, I grew up in W.pa watching your dad and you race.My father owned a sprint # 20 driven by Bill Banick most of the years. This is my first recollection of you and I'm laughing lightheartedly as I'm remembering and slowly typing. It was at Tri-city speedway in Franklin Pa 1972 i think and you were driving a white #18 jr.(Mac Clingan car)? Jack West happened to be driving our car that night...in the heat, you started in back of us. Coming off of #2, you just flat out came up and really hit the car in the rear wrecking it while you continued on. Needless to say, we weren't too happy but we took our lumps. What is funny is your dad came down and apologized and wanted to lend a hand fixing the car. I think West stayed clear of you in the feature! At least you were always on the gas!!! LOL Great memories...I think not long after that, you drove a red #11 for Tom Felicity for awhile?? Nice to hear from you Rick..ron cubic

I remember the 20 car very well and the name Ron Cubic. I had to think real hard and I vaguely remember the eposide at Franklin. If I was in the 18jr it was a car that Mac Clingan let me and my dad have to get me started. It was in '71 and I only ran a handfull of races that year in the 18jr. In '72 we made the same arrangement with Jasper Petite that we had with Mac in that my dad would drive for Jasper if he would help us out with a car for me to drive. I think it was '73 when I drove for Felicity. that was my first real ride for a car owner. Nice chatting with you Ron.

partialperson,

just curiuos. when you say Johnny McDaniel, in the picture posted above, would that be John McDaniel's son, from Carbondale IL?. I was at John McDaniels shop when he was doing a heavy race schedule, many many moons ago.Thats the first I have heard of that name in many moons.

Take Care

Since the time was in diapers, I first met him when he and my dad raced gocarts, John McDaniel was Johnny Mac to me. I started to type Johnny Mac but decided to use his full last name. John is in the picture with the everpresent flannel shirt, Scott, "Scottie Mac", his son is standing next to him. It's funny you say many moons. John's wife Glenda's maiden name is Moon. Her brothers were a constant fixture at the McDaniels', many Moons many moons ago. John was always an inspiration to me, the way he watched and studied a car, I was always afraid to approach him. I would just stand back an watch in awe, He was my Rockstar!

John was a great person. I talk to Glenda via email from time to time and I talked to Curt a while back. I liked it when we spent a little time preparing the car at their place. Glenda is one of the best cooks ever. It was easy to see why Johnny Mac always carried a bit of a spare tire. I wish I could've driven a Johnny Mac wrenched car longer than I did, hell I might still be driving lol.

RICK??? SEEMS LIKE I KNOW THIS CAT FROM SOME PLACE.. I MIGHT CAN COME UP WITH A FEW PIC OF HIM FROM A FEW PLACES...LOL YEA I think my 1st do it in the dirt shirt I had him sign it. After I got done making a gumbo sprint car with the push up sticks to hold the gumbo tires on at Riverside. If I am thinking right he might be the same Rick that had me drive a stick shift from Memphis to Mo. UMMM not bad but never had been in one. Boy I used to love me some Rick. Yea you could drive but that is not what comes to mind.. Paying my way in to see the 1st Steelers Game was great. Even if you were mad about the pice...lol. Maybe this year some luck will help out the 44 sprinter. I need all I can get...

Hey Ronny, I just answered my own question when I clicked on the link you provided. All I had to do was look at your picture to know you were who I thought you were. Good looking racecar too. I see you played football at Northwest, isn't that where Benny played? You've turned into a fine young man and have a beautiful family, I'm proud of you...good luck and take care of yourself.

Rick, you wouldn't know me from Adam but I remember you.

First, let me say I think it is so great that a guy like you will take the time to reminisce with fans, espesially ones you don't know. I wish some of the other ""Greats from the Past" would do the same! Us fans that have been around a long time revel in the memory of "The good old days!"

I started doing video (Quality Race Video) in Cali in '86 stayed with it weekly for 20 years. I have a lot of stuff from the days of the Klein car and Brock Robertson's #8 Ford. I just talked to Brock saturday night at the Outlaw show in Tulare.

Do you remember how they had tires dug into the infield edge at Hanford, with half the tire sticking up above ground level. Do you remember hitting those tires and the car would shoot up in the air then land hard on all four wheels? Never could figure out how the bars stood up to it.

If you have records of when and where you ran in Cali in those days, let me see if I can dig up some memories for you. I shot Baylands, every week in '87 &'88. I did all the Golden State Challenge and Narc races, plus Dirt Cup and west coast WoO shows.

Yep. That would be me. Donny said Hi also. We were talking about you the other day when someone was asking about old names...lol I know that makes you feel older. Sister is doing fine still moves around like a school bus. Donny's doing great. I put him in my 2nd car every blue moon to let him play with us. Mother is doing good. I will tell her you said hi. I take it you know dad passed away. They all would love to hear from you when you get the time. Give us a call. 901 644 7110. North West is were Dad played. I went on from North West to sign with UT, but ended up at Delta State. Good talking to someone that I used to look up 2. Was not sure if you recalled the Steelers game or not. Talk at you later.

Wow, what a memory. Those were awesome times. I can remember watching him drive the Crash Bros.#46 at Clinton, Pa. I only wish more records were kept from those days so that the guys you mention including my Dad could recieve the recognition they deserve. When my Dad first got sick I decided to see if I could possibly get him in the Hall of Fame but I couldn't come up with enough documentation showing his accomplishments. He didn't talk alot about his career and he wasn't a bragger but he casually mentioned that there were probably years when he would win near 100 races a year. Bear in mind that there were periods when he used to race six times every five days, with Sunday afternoon races then again Sunday night. He did this while raising 4 kids and working a real job as a body man. As an old car owner of mine, Jim Klein used to jokingly say, "those were the days when men were men and women were glad".

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Rick Ungar

Want to go back even further? How about the offset roadster/super that your dad drove for Jack Lewis. I remember it as a red and white #8, and it was a very nicely done car. I later became aquainted with a gentleman who worked as a parts manager at a Ford Dealer here in Pittsburgh who knew you dad in Parkersburg. He said your dad had a salvage yard; his name was Darryl Ulbricht.Do you recognize the name? Your dad was Quite a good driver back then. .... John

Thanks, I enjoy reminising with you all. I appreciate the fact that some of you remember me and even as far back as my Dad.

If you see Brock again be sure and tell him hi...tell him to call me, I have a toll free # @ work 877-385-8733. I sell semi's for Jeff Stoops @ Stoops Freightliner.

I do remember the tires sticking up at Hanford. I always liked that track.

I'll have to dig for some dates as I drove Kleins car full time in '85 and early in '86 and again in '88 or '89. I'll see what I can come up with.

Again thanks for remembering.

Hey it does make me feel older but as I always say, getting old is better than the alternative, lol. Is Donny still married to LaDonna? I did here about Benny passing, really saddened me, he was a great guy. I used to talk to Cecil Jordan once in a while but haven't in quite some time. The Steelers game, was that pee wee football when Donny played? I wrote your # in my book and will give you a call. Feel free to pass out my toll free work # @ Stoops Freightliner 877-385-8733 and or my email address [email protected]. I'd love to here from anyone that wants to chat. Good luck Ronny.

Hi John,

I do remember the car though I thought that the service manager, Don Mccullough at the Ford store in our original home town of Garrettsville, Ohio owned the car but maybe Jack owned it and Don maintained it. I think Goerge Kothera may have built the car and yes it was a good looking car. I don't think dad really drove it much but he may have shook it down for them. It was sharp looking but wasn't a very fast car. We moved to Belpre,Ohio in '71 and Dad did own a wrecking yard for many years, Hilltop Auto Wrecking, there was also a track that was part of the property. Darryl Ulbricht doesn't ring a bell and you're right my dad was one of the best in the area for many years. Thanks for remembering John.

I drove it in '84 until June when I put the Lonestar #2 deal together and I don't know who drove it after that. Sorry.

I did a search on Google for "1984 Knoxville Nationals results" and found a complete rundown of the finishes for Knoxville’s entire 1984 season. Unless I missed it, they do not show a 47X at the Nationals in 1984. There was a 47 driven by a Scott Ritchart.

Thank you ,,i tryed to do that and could not find it. Never tryed just Knoxville results,,,good idea....I was suprised that it is so hard to get the finish for all the Knoxville Nationals, by going on line.,it was 47 i was looking for . I have  a picture that is Autographed By Wolfgang ,Kinser ,Sammie,, i figured i would get the Autograph of the only other car in the Photo,,now i got to try to find Scott Ritchart.

Maybe i could go to the Hall of Fame at Knoxville and get the results for all of them. I have several other photos from different years there.

Does anybody know were Scott Ritchart could be found.  Thank you Ford fan  .........Tim

Hey guys... Knoxville's results (and stories) are now on the web, dating back to 1978. That not only has Knoxville Nationals results, but also every other race run there. It is at knoxvilleraceway.com - click on the results link, and then click on "Click Here for Historic Results". Is is kind of hard to see that link with the new website design & color - but it is there. It brings up PDFs then for every year dating back to '78. I've spent hours already looking through the years... good stuff... thanks to Bill W!

I finally searched for the 1961 Knoxville Nationals had to go down a ways but i found it. It has every driver that ever ran the Nationals in ABC order. If they made the A Main they are there. All the way back to 1961.

www.knoxvilleraceway.com-historicEvent.aspxid=13 this might be the hard way but its there. It even has records for Late Models. And alot of other stats.
