Charlie Fisher beating Gary Wright at KC in the Freedom 40. Gary past Charlie after 25ish laps and with 5ish to go Charlie pasted him back. Charlie won that race with a homebuilt car and engine.

Charlie Fisher winning at KC is far from an upset.  That guy is a pioneer in the Sprint Car world and builds some of the best powerplants to date.  + KC is his home track

I know it might sound ridiculous to call Schatz winning Nationals an "upset", but nobody was expecting Schatz to win it a few years ago from B-Main & 21st (?) in the A....it was a shocker

I think Max Dumesney winning the Mystery feature on the friday night at Knoxville 85? He beat Doug Wolfgang in the all conquoring Wiekert car, that was a bit of an upset.

That is ridiculous.     It wasn't a shocker that he won, he had 50 laps and a planned red flag to get to the front.  It was somewhat of a shocker how fast he got to the front.    The only way I wouldn't have bet on Schatz to win it was if he started 24th and a lap down.

Lots of guys made impressive runs from the back of the field in 30 lap Nationals A-Mains.  IIRC, Jeff Swindell came out of the B and made it up to 2nd and many others have came out of the B and made it into the top 5 in the 30 lap Sprint car races of long ago.

I'm gonna disagree with kooks and agree with you on this to some degree.  My buddies and I sat in the stands taking bets on who was gonna be the new, first-time winner of the Nationals.  As we watched the first 15-20 laps unfold, we all (along with 24000 other people) sat silent and watched in disbelief as he shredded the field in a matter of 5 minutes.  Once he got to about 5th place, you knew it was over and to me, it was no longer an upset.  Before he got up to that point, I really didn't think he was going to be able to do it.

So, long story short, I see where you're coming from!

Alvin Roepke winning the Freedom 40 at K-C Raceway over Frankie Kerr when Frankie was the man to beat with the All Stars.

You know I may be reconsidering.  Dave Blaney's All Star win at Butler Michigan a couple years ago with a RY Ford would be hard to top.  Not a single item on that engine is deemed worthy to even consider trying to run very part time by TSR.  Does anyone know if a driver has ever won a race with no engine in the car at all?  If not, Dave on a big half mile with a mean cushion that night with that terrible little Ford may be the winner!

Butler is not a half mile.

Alvin also lapped PA Hotshoe Lance Dewease and came real close to lapping T-Mac, he was on a rail for that one night....

Tom Basinger winning a Speedweek show at Fremont in the early 90s. I believe he beat Sammy that night and it was the only win of his career.

Find it funny...when Balog beats an outlaw at Beaver Damn it isn't an upset, yet when a Posse beats an Outlaw at a PA track it is... don't get it?

Yea, same here. Everybody thought he was out of it... I was watching him move up, & lilke you said, by the time he got to 5th or 4th, it dawned on me... "this sumbish is gonna do it..."

I would agree. She could wheel a sprint car and her car owner at that time -Mike Woodring- knows a thing or two.

No. Use google earth pro and measure it. Not even in shouting distance of being a 1/2.

Probably NOT one of the greatest upsets, but it is one that stands out in my mind.  Sammy was visiting Hepfners shop in Wisconsin for some parts, and the IRA was running Wilmot that night.  Todd Hepfner was not running his car and I guess the suggestion came up to see if Sammy was interested. They loaded up and arrived to the track between 5 and 6.  Sammy, never in the car until he strapped in, proceeded to turn  the quick lap.  He went on to win his heat and continued on to win the A, going away.  Again, not an upset, but a pretty good story, and I am not a Sammy fan.

+1

That WAS very impressive!
