I like Jethro's, but to say that it is the best BBQ place ever is a bit of a stretch.  Not sure the places you've hit up in the cities that you mentioned, but apparently they weren't the right ones.

Personally Jethros is one of the best .I have eaten BBQ all across the country an attended many BBQ competions...BBQ is a personality food what I like you wont an visa versa...Jethros is very consistant an in my book one of the best across this land.....remember just cause a place doesnt sit in BBQ country such as Kansas city..Okla..Texas ..or the south doesnt discount its taste. Jus sayin

A new 28 foot BBQ concession trailer - Prime Country BBQ & Catering is going to be parked right next to the ticket office on the south side of the track. Our smoker is in the back 9 feet of the trailer and have a full commercial kitchen on the front 19 ft.  We will be smoking on sight day and night so all meat will be just off the smoker fresh.  Prime Country BBQ is going to be serving up the best brisket, pulled pork, loaded prime rib steak sandwiches you have ever tasted.   Homemade sides - cheesey potatoes, homemade mac n cheese, smoked beans (4 hours) on the smoker, cole slaw, and the best hot peach cobbler you have ever had will be served.   Please come see us and give us a try - you won't be sorry!!  We are told every day that we have the best food they have ever eaten and wherever we go we have a long line waiting for our food.  If there is a line - don't be scared to wait  - we serve everyone very fast.  We will also have some pub tables for you to eat by and also can do your meal in to go containers or we also have 50/50 cups which we fill with your choice of brisket or pulled pork along with your choice of one side.  Great way to get some amazing bbq and be able to walk around and eat it out of a logo'd Prime Country cup while on the go.  Stop in and see us -  BEST BBQ AROUND!!!

I'm there...always a fan of good BBQ.

The Rib Shack across the Parking Lot from the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum is very, very good.  Also reasonably priced and the place is full of great sprint car pictures and other racing related stuff.

Downtown Knoxville is a good Mexican resturant and Tasos, a family style resturant has an excellent buffet or you can order off the menu.

HyVee which is just across the street from the track has excellent steak sandwichesl and the Tent on the lawn of the Hall of Fame has good stuff also....

The food tent to the right as you enter at the main entrance of the track is very good also....

Pizza Hut is within 100 yards of the backstretch grandstands and Mr. C's is right in front of Pizza Hut.

If you are staying in either Pella or Oskaloosa, there are several very nice places in either town.  In Osky my favorites are the mexican resturant in the mall on highway 92 and the Smokey Row Coffee House on the West side of the Square.  In Pella, I like Kalderas and also the Chinese resturant there is very good.

Iowa State Fair is will also be going on, lots of good food there and an added adventure. East side of Des Moines, pretty easy to get to from the Highway 5 by-pass on E, University. Only draw back is the expense to get in and the price of some of the food. For all you "Food on a Stick" fans their claiming something like 60 or 70 different Food on a Stick" items.

Downtown Diner is the BEST breakfast in Knoxville, lots of food, good prices, and great service every time I've been there.  Red Ribbon Bakery is also open on the square now and they have incredible food and great lunch specials every day and I think they just started an actual bakery so they have doughnuts and stuff like that now.  Seating there is EXTREMELY limited and I know Red Ribbon is a favorite of all the people who work around the square so expect it to be busy but it is definitely worth it.  Deng's Garden is also on the square if you're in the mood for Chinese, but it's not a buffet, although they do have a pretty wide assortment of menu options.  Pella has a great Chinese buffet restaurant if that's what you're looking for. I believe that's it's called Panda Garden and it's just off of the square in Pella.

One of my favorites was right next to the sprint car museum. Smoked turkey legs and homemade pie with ice cream. I think they cut out the turkey legs though. If I smell the smoke from over that way I will be headed there.

Smittys Tenderloin is on Army Post Road. It is a classic tenderloin eatery. "Home of the Tenderized Loin".

For BBQ, Smokey D's should be on your list.  I believe they are the award winning "A Boy and His BBQ" folks from the BBQ PitMasters TV show and competitions.  They have a couple locations, one is downtown, and the other is on the north side of Des Moines just off of I-80.

If you like steak, and BIG steaks at that, the Iowa Beef Steakhouse is still around.  It's on the north side of Des Moines, on Euclid Ave.  The facility itself is nothing special, but the steaks are worth noting.  If you're a steak lover, you can pick your favorite 22oz+ out of the cooler.

Don't forget about the State Fair either.
