While I think it is a crazy idea, I don't agree with his premise.  Give me a moment to explain.   I actually love midgets more than any other class of cars.   I will try to go to as many big midget races as I can, and normally don't plan on going to Knoxville Nationals.   However, I only live three hours away from Knoxville, and every July I start getting the Nationals fever.   Some years, I have the funds to make the trip work, others I dont.   Some years, I have waited until a couple of weeks before the event to plan the trip.   Since I am only looking for one ticket, I can always find a ticket.   I am not a night owl and do not like making the three hour trip home after the nationals.   So, I will always get a hotel room.   I can always find a hotel room in Des Moines.  It has never been an issue even with my lack of planning.

Is this for real?

I don't like sleeping in a tent with no air either.  Nor, do I like showering with a hose.  So, I bought a camper and rented a full hookup campsite.

Like an earlier poster said, this is the KNOXVILLE Nationals.  There are other "Nationals" all over the country.  The Iowa State Fair has never, ever caused me an issue----seeing as its an hour away.  You can't find food and drink in Knoxville during the Nationals?  Wow.

If you really want food options, the Iowa State Fair would be the place to go.   Hell, a fried twinkie and a large Diet Coke?  That's the breakfast of champions right there!

You know, in 18 straight years of attending the Nationals, I have never made it up to the state fair.  As I get older, I should consider that option.  I can't just sit and drink all day anymore Smile

Great idea! Call the Knoxville fair board and tell them they should give away their multi million dollar gold mine cause you don't like where its located now. I'm sure they would love to hear from you & listen to your opinions.

Perhaps the stupidest post I've ever seen on here. I'm impressed that you typed that whole thing up and actually submitted it. You could have saved yourself some time and just asked for tips on how to make it a better experience. Part of the charm of Nationals week is that the whole community welcomes a ton of people into their town. I've been going for the last 18 years and staying at the same guys place every year. He lets us shower in his house, he sets up a bunch of seating in his garage and had a bunch of refrigerators and stuff we can use. The guy is like an uncle to me now. You don't have things like that at other sporting events or other races. It's also pretty accessible to the average fan. You can buy a cheap tent from Walmart and set it up in somebody's yard for cheap. If you don't enjoy Knoxville you are doing it wrong. Try something different next year.

Indiana Open Wheel.
As you might guess it's a forum (a good one) primarily dedicated to non wing sprint cars. And some clown who has less than 25 posts comes on and makes some rediculous suggest about combining all major sprint car series.  And gets mad when folks tell him so. Head on over for a visit

Thanks. I was close; I had googled Iowa Open Wheel. I have found the thread in question and it was entertaining.

I thought you were staying in a tent and showering with a garden hose?

It is the KNOXVILLE NATIONALS! Moving it is not even an option! KNOXVILLE is the sprintcar capital of the world, not only for the Nats, but the SCHOF! No other sprint race anywhere rival the Nationals. Kings Royal, World Finals, Jackson Nats, ect. are all great events but having been to all of them and more, there is only one Knoxville! Leave it alone! If it aint broke don't fix it!!

TROPHY CUP is a damn fine show also.

We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

This sounds like Chuck on Rock Island or someone very much like him. Loved that guy and everyone that stayed there! It's probably harder now but we used to roll into Knoxville Monday before the Nationals with no plan and always managed to find a place in town. Of course when we found Chuck we had a plan :-).

Chris Lovett. I used to sell the Paul Oxman Sprintcar Calendars. The first time we stayed at Chuck's was 1998 and every time we went after that. My buddys Spike and Randy Frank have stayed there too. I can't remember the last time I stayed there but it has been way too long. How is Chuck?

Chuck's doing good! Getting older, but aren't we all? I remember you, I was probably a young punk the last time you were at his place.

If you told me it would rain the whole week of the Nationals I would still go just to hang out with Chuck.

That is great to hear! Randy went back one year and hung out there a lot which is something he had wanted to do for a long time. Said he spent a lot of time in the pool Chuck built. I actually miss the outdoor shower :-). It was cold most of the time but usually great on a hot Iowa day. I don't wish rain on any event but I agree with you and would probably end up hanging out in the garage with you guys!
