Not bashing Knoxville at all, because their prep is great and I enjoyed the shit out of being at the Nationals this year but.........Saturday night I left the track with more dirt piled on my head, legs and shoulders than at any time I can remember at Port, this year or any other. And at both tracks I sit/sat either in the top row or within a row or two of the top. So it tells me a few things......

1. tracks can be dusty as hell and still have great racing (Knoxville does, Port does sometimes)

2. perfect track prep doesn't mean a dirt track isn't going to be dusty, it is dirt people (bstrawser)

3. don't feed the bstrawser. He'll continue to bash Port comparing it to Knoxville. Guess what, no Pa track compares, not even his   beloved Selinsgrove.

Having been to races for well over fifty years at many dirt tracks, I have determined one thing regarding track prep and the effect on the grandstands. There is a hell of a difference betwen getting dirty and being dusted out. Yes, I've left Knoxville with fine black dirt on me, but I don't remember it ever being so bad that I had to look away or cover my face, both which I have had to do at some tracks. Again, it is dirt, and that can be unpredictable. Some tracks are nearly miserably dusty/dirty with just one night of racing, Knoxville does a great job for four nights running. I think that alone sets Knoxville apart from other tracks.

Steelcityguy,

  1. I have never said anything about dust from any track I have visited.  Some of the best racing is when it gets dusty.

  2. I was at Eldora this year and before we hit the hay each night we had to get a shower it was that dusty.  I really enjoyed two out of the three races at Eldora.  They missed track prep on Friday night and had to rework the track.  It was a little better for the feature after the track prep but not where it should have been for a big race.

  3. What I have said is that I hate to see asphalt racing on a dirt track and that has nothing to do with dust.  Packing the track so hard the racers can’t get a grip on the surface is not dirt track racing. This type of track is normally hard, black and dry long before the features start.

  4. I know there is only one Knoxville and it is second to none.

  5. Some PA tracks do the same thing week in and week out with the same subpar results.  Sucky racing that the drivers can’t get a grip on the track and make exciting moves.

  6. This doesn’t mean some PA tracks can’t use what type of clay they have and let the push trucks run in the tracks and when they are done let the race cars finish it off before racing.  You want your track to be at its best for the features not the warmups and heats.

  7. Knoxville proves that night in and night out…..the Juniata County oval proves the exact opposite each and every time they race.

  8. Your words, If, I love Selinsgrove so much, why would I have only gone there twice this year?

You better get your stories straight before you come on hear and start putting words into some ones mouth.

I can talk for myself…..I don’t need your help.

It is nothing the track preparers at the Juniata County oval haven't heard from me before.   Just ask Mr. Swartz he will remember me.

It is not just talking....it is the truth and as per normal some people can't handle the truth.

Depending on where you sit, Port is rather dirty when they get it right. When it's packed down hard like they usually have it and black from wall to wall, you don't usually get nearly as much dirt on you.

They prep it just right for winged sprints most of the time. They need to provide more grip when the non-wing cars run there, however. Unlike most tracks, they do their prep before the races start and don't ever touch it during the night. I've seen them pack the cushion years ago but they must have learned their lesson. Most other tracks I've been to this year in the Midwest have ended up bad. They start out good and then the crew does everything they can to destroy it and turn it into a dust bowl. I'm so sick of it I've cut back on going to races...tired of getting pissed off almost every time.

Same in Central PA unfortunately. I too don't go to as many races as I used to at the tracks that do that. Not my cup of tea. Robert Ballou has been preaching the same gospel on Twitter for awhile now and I love him for it.

I also slowed down on going to the races over the years.  I really love them, but can't stand what the track preparers do to some tracks around here and it has nothing to do with dust.

Yes, and I hate the same stuff on a different day when the racing stinks and the drivers can't get a grip on the track.  They don't have a clue on how to prepare a dirt track!!  They need the intervention of mother nature to have a good track.  That is the shame of it all and that is.....shame on them!

You can quit your bitching now. The track was dry and hard usual then mother nature came through and fixed it for them. Currently in a rain delay. If they're able run tonight, the track will be great. So now, see if you can go one day without talking about it......
