You're right.....luck had nothing to do with it. Three years in a row, Brown ran second to Schatz at the Nationals. Two of those years, Brown really had the opportunity to win, but a mistake really hurt his chances.
In 2012 It was obvious that Brown had what it took to get by Donny. Brian was definately stalking at the end. On the white flag lap, however, Brian missed the cushion on the white flag lap, gathered it in and made his move coming out of four, but came up half a car length short and Donny wins at the line.
In 2013 Brown lead pretty much the entire race, while Schatz steadily made his way to the front. I forget where he started. With about 10 to go, Schatz passed Brown and drove away for the win.
In 2014, Brown really had his best opportunity. Schatz led pretty much the entire race, while Brown moved up to get in to second to place. The last half Brown steadily stalked Donny....with Donny getting away, and then Brown reeling him back in. towards the latter stages, Brown was not only there, but right on Donny. Both were running seperate grooves, Donny low, Brian high, and it was obvious that Brown was the quicker of the two. The second Brown made his move I thought to myself "DAMN YOU PASSED HIM TOO EARLY"...(I have often wondered if Brian had thought that back in 2012 he waited too long?) it was lap 43.....Brown went around Donny coming out of two and led down the backstretch. Brown showed Schatz the faster line! Donny even said so in his interview. Anyway, Schatz immediately changed his line and on lap 45, Brown changed his line to "block" Donny, and Donny went around Brown and went on to win. Brown really made two critical errors that race. He passed Donny too early, then changed his own line thinking Donny was still running low.
That's how I remember those races. But....we know how memories can be....

I think that's pretty much spot on.
2012, Schatz uncharacteristically wore his tires out. Brown was faster, but came up a bit short.
2013, Schatz came from 21st, historic run, but benefitted from the race being 50 laps.
2014, if I remember correctly, Brown didn't protect the bottom in 3 and 4 once he passed him in 1 and 2 and Schatz came right back.
One of the things that makes Schatz great, is that when he's passed, he gathers it back up immediately and goes back for the kill. Many drivers get too flustered and lose too much time gathering themselves back up.

I am just curious. How do you know he wore his tires out in 2012?

If I recall, I think he said it in victory lane.

Asked if the sixth time felt as good as the first time, Schatz exhaustingly replied, “I think it was the hardest one to win.” Pausing for a moment, the six time Nationals Champion continued, “Man I burned the tires off of it. I just couldn’t get myself feeling very good and I knew someone would be coming those last few laps. It was everything I could do to keep it going forward. Last night was a lot of fun, tonight was a lot harder but it feels great.”

Entry list know up to 81. Who is the 51 that Saldana is driving for?
|
Pure speculation but maybe the 51 James McFadden drove for Willie Kahne and crew during the Cali WoO swing.

I just checked Sammy's schedule... he has both 360 & 410 Nats on the list
Also found out he's in 3 Allstar races this weekend in Upstate NY....was debating whether to go, now its pretty much settled. Last year he earned what I suspected was his last 410 victory at Lebanon Valley, who knows, he could get 3 more. Also the last ever race for Steve Kinser, glad I witnessed the historic nite

94, Lasoski is listed twice (the 1M and the 33).
That also includes (3) TBA teams that may or may not find a driver (I think 2 of the 3 will for sure, but you never know).

So who is left? Of the 30 or so that were there Saturday, only Brazier and Hafertepe aren't on the entry list.
Chad Trout was an early entrant not likely to attend, so we're at 93.

Tony Stewart is not listed yet but seems likely given he ran a 410 there a couple weeks ago & has now entered the 360 Nationals. Christopher Bell has a truck race in Michigan on Saturday at 1:00pm in Michigan. Would seem he could get back on time for Saturday night barring any weather delays. Don't know what his contractual arrangement is regarding running races the same day as a truck race though.
I heard thru my limited grapevine that Joey Moughan from Springfield IL is going to run it but don't see him listed yet.
