Some important items I go over with any new racing client that I wanted to share with everyone. Now is the time as the weather warms (slowly) and the season is coming, to get our minds in gear:
How do you know making that the commitment to get racing fit is for you? Ask yourself these questions; 1. Are you happy with where you are physically, emotionally and mentally? 2. What is your ideal vision for your racing success? 3. Are ready to take charge of your life and make the necessary changes? 4. Do you have the dedication, motivation and discipline to make the changes happen for yourself? 5. You really want it bad enough? 6. Do you accept that change comes from within and you are the only one with the power and responsibilty to make the decision?
Go through those. They do a pretty good job of gauging where you are in your development towards more racing wins.
I'll be sharing another of Travis Rilat's favorite Helmet Talks at some point this weekend too.
Best to everyone!

How about that old Mark Martin winning that nationwide race yesterday? He and I use to get drunk together back in the early 80s. It was around then we both quit drinking and got into fitness. I was a track announcer back then. Talk about career longevity with continued success. He was twice the age of most racers in that field today. Mark even was a spokes person for York fitness equipment back in the 90s.
He still works out harder than many other racers and it continues to show. Way to go Mark!

Hi Lynn good to here from you! Hope all is well. Things are fine here in Texas. No snowmobiling unfortunately. Altough that week of the Super Bowl looked like it might happen.
If you get a chance, do me a favor and check out my free subscriber videos at http://racersworkout.com and give me your thoughts. I am really fired up about this program and the impact it will have.

Racers,
This is one of my favorite foods for the hours leading up to the race. I love all fruits and veggies for race day, but bananas hold a special place for me. One of the biggest reasons is that with the dehydration that can be common in the heat of a car, they help maintain valuable potassium levels, which prevents cramping.

To more butt kicking and winning out there.

Russ,
In your opinion, is Crossfit (http://www.crossfit.com/) an ideal fitness regimen for drivers? I've found that these short interval (10-25min), high intensity workouts, are much more effective than my old routine of 15-20 mins of cardio and 45-60min. With weight training I gained more strength but still experienced fatigue. With Crossfit, the fatigue is much less apparent, and my weight/body fat is much lower.

I think any workout has merit over none at all. There are lots of positive options out there. When I undertook Racers Workout development, I hadn't seen seen much of anything in fitness in the motorsports world that put it all together to maximize the results on the race track.. No matter the program, first we have to start some kind of movement with our bodies and minds. JUST MOVE IT is where we are at right now, and our program will provide the rest.
I do think that fitness is a lot like a lot of areas in our modern world: information overload is what we don't need. JUST MOVE IT and find something that you feel good with that is organized and gets max results for minimum time invested. I will promise you that the principles that benefit you with cross fit 5CRR, are strongly represented in many workouts such as Racers. Except Racers knows every angle and technique to make you kick maximum butt out there in the sport you love.
I am proud of you for getting in there and doing it. Action is everything.

Hey Everyone,
I am big on working hard at core strength. Your core is basically your muscles extending from your chest to your upper thighs. They are super important for racing stamina and also important to maintain durability long term.
Back problems late in life are as much a product of a weak core than anything. A person with a weak core, will be more likely to compensate with his back while working or lifting.
When you are couching it watching the race on a week-end, you can really go after strengthening that core. During the commercials, commit to going to the floor and work on straightening your legs with your arms straight over your head and holding for a 5 count. Maintain normal breathing and never hold your breath.
Do this on your stomach and on your back. On your tummy you are like Superman, on your back you are like you are doing a backstroke in a pool. Great core strengthening exercise. Over time try to hold for a 6 count, then 7 and so on.
Try and let me know what you think.

I am thrilled by getting to meet everyone on here. The feedback has been really positive. You all can rest assured that my relationship with the Hosehead forum will be a long term one. In addition to their posts, folks from this forum will always be able to find me by email. Also, if you become part of the Racers Workout movement at any point, count on that continued support with all your Racers Workout fitness questions from me directly and not some call center surrogate. The people on these forums will always be my core team. We will maximize your results.
I am very appreciative of you all.
I'll be back on Thursday. Leave your questions and I'll get back to them at that point.

Quitting at anything doesn't take much discipline especially a life of slugging down the cold ones. Waking up after polishing off a 30 pack of barley pops and strapping on the ol' work boots, that takes guts and endurance. Slaving away for a crappy boss while fighting off the shakes and day dreaming of pouring a beer down your gullet, again is tough and isn't for the weak hearted. Ducking your landlord so you can spend the rent money at the lounge is hard work and definitely requires internal fortitude. Nope, I ain't no quitter. Racing into your 60's as a devout boozer now that's something.
PS-All in fun and thanks for your service to the sport.
Cheers!

Russ talking about core strength how many double Bacon cheeseburgers does it take to lift the front of a sprint car?
