Dang, I guess if you don't have the original dash panel, your out of luck. frown On the beautiful car pictured with the spring front, what actually holds the spring onto the perch? I see one "peg" of sorts, but what fastens to the spring itself? I have to put a perch on a old car I have but don't really know how to build it or attach the spring to the perch.

I think I can answer that. I was never a well known chassis or parts builder but I did a lot of fabrication back in the days of the front spring setup. Note in the picture, the perch for the spring. The two top bolts were each side of the center of the spring and used to adjust weight. The horizontal bolt, running from front to rear in the perch held the spring in place. The spring was held together at the center by 2 u-bolts and plates, top and bottom, with a cylinder (pipe or tubing) welded to the top plate. Thats what the bolt went through to secure. Some had a bushing, some not. I hope this helps. I don't have a close up illistration of this setup but if someone does maybe they will post it.

Roger

OK Lets have a little fun who has a trostle car and what s/n and is it coilover 4 bar or spring front.I will start my friend has chassis number 533 and it is a spring front. just trying to see how many trostle cars are left

Gil Sonner and Don Sonner have S/N 147. It is at Strange Performance in Des Moines. It was a Spring Front built in 1972 for them. It was driven by Burt Sonner. They restored it back in the late 90's. It was in the front window of the Hall of Fame a few years back.

The serial number on Bob's cars is also on the lower cross tube at the bottom of the motorplate, if I remember right. Early cars didn't have numbers stamped on them. Last I heard #1 had had a transmission added and was traveling in some Super Chevy shows - a shame after Bob did such a beautiful job of restoring it to original. I doubt the owners have any idea what they have.

Should have asked Bob about the hood, we just talked about the serial number location. I was wrong! It is on the the right side rail of the cage, just behind the ring for the steering mount. He said he figured if that needed to be replaced the whole car was junk. He didn't start numbering cars until around #300. If he got one of the older cars back to work on he'd add the number. He has them all written down in a log book that lists who bought each car, when it was built, and what type it was.

I still have what was the old Coors #9 Kain car that ran at Knoxville. Did Fred and Bob work together?

Thanks for the info. Yes that does look like a mid tube frame in the background. any body have a hood like that one? Would like to restore someday. I have some new sprint car parts, I MAY be interested in trading for vintage parts. you can call 507-380-2283

# 245, originally sold to Hooker Hood (in 77 I believe) has been beautifully restored, and was on display at the Memphis Rodders & Racer's Reunion last night. Black and gold # 99. The car is now owned by Mike Brown (I believe he used to work at J&J Chassis with Jack Elam)

doublenuthin, you wouldn't happened to be the long time racer/owner Larry Weeks would you? Very interesting thread about Trostle. I just got done reading Wolfgang's book and of course Bob Trostle was a big part of Doug's career.

I have a old Hilborn injector , im guessing earlie sixteys? pain in the a$$ to clean knozzels would be good for a retro deal, not a weekly routine,a NRO, old school front cover, and a earlie 327(62 ish) small journal engine , that needs work, and some not so correct AFR standard port heads, I was going to build into a retro sprint mill for a t bucket project to give to my dad, Ive been looking at the old style (black)M/T valve covers , they would really make it complete, just havent started it yet, I might be interested in 410 stuff ? The NRO cover utilizes a square drive for the water pump, and no crank window, how did you old fellas time these things back then? back of the motor somehow? im also looking for the square pump drive. this thing would be a pretty unique hotrod engine ,

as for the hood, I was just studying the photo, considering I was born in 1975, I still get a kick out of that old stuff ,wow, how far we have come, a couple years ago someone on here ,gave me some flack about playing down some old school cars/drivers trying to clean house today , and I was just trying to be honest, maybe, they should have got to know me better , (still bothers me ) considering my second car I bought in 1992 was a 69 chevelle SS I still happily own it today , Oe , and the first was a 69 cutlass , but, to be honest, I really wanted a 442! , remember when a seat belt was moms arm across your chest ,"now, sitdown" LOL ,yep thats me , I was shittn diapers when dad stood on the gas! " and, I liked it!"
