I love and appreciate everything Tony has done for Eldora and sprint car racing in general. But at the same time Ballou's and Tony's comments have me wondering... While the track conditions at Eldora have been different in recent years vs. years past, I agree the recent years have created great races and somewhat equalized competition. But at the same time I miss when Eldora was wet n' heavy, high banked, and right on the wall. I didn't really mind the fact it was follow the leader, its the Eldora I fell in love with.
I don't know if the recent track prep has been done by choice or the amount of moisture is naturally limited by the current dirt/clay... But I would be highly interested to see someone do the track prep who wants a wet, heavy track with a big cushion. I really hope Ballou takes him up on his offer next year to see how it goes.

“I didn’t really mind the fact that it was follow the leader.” What?!? Who says that??

That should end this. Track prep is key in good races and its nice when there are more than one lane.Weather can play a factor and Knoxville is lucky they have the best.Boone Iowa only runs RaceSavers and IMCA classes but their track prep is outstanding and they run all week with many cars. To me Twitter and facebook are not places to vent your frustrations as they esculate and get taken out of context. The POTUS is a great example.

Someone who doesn't care to see anyone come from 20th to 3rd running the bottom at Eldora. I already admitted, the dry slick produces great racing and equalizes competition but the Eldora I fell in love with as a kid is far from any track we've seen in recent years. The June speedweek show was an incredible race... but other than Larson nobody was pounding the fence lap after lap like it used to be. Dave Blaney damn near won the race running in the middle groove. There was just something special about running wide open and inches off the wall for 30+ laps.
And to clarify I'm not mad about dry slick conditions... as long as I see a close race I'm happy (unless Donny wins haha). I just miss the days when it seemed like the only chance to win was being the fastest car on the wall.

After watching the video of all 4 features I have to say the track and racing were awesome. The midget feature was first and the track was still somewhat tacky and that's when Bayston crashed so I honestly don't get Ballou's post at all.
One has to think he was just mad because he wrecked himself and had to blame someone.

Agreed. How is wet and heavy with a big ledge safer than dry/slick with a smaller cushion on a big banked half mile?

Earl Baltes specifically states in his autobiography that he would bet bitched at often by drivers wanting a big wet cushion but he resisted because he didn't care to see anymore competitors (who he genuinely cared about) killed there. I went there last year on the Thursday night of King's royal weekend when it down poured and they ran the whole program at about 1am on a crazy fast, tacky track. The A main was a parade, they were flying but there was minimal passing. I think they are doing great and enjoyed the open red interview with Roger Slack when he talked about the PH of the track and what they do to facilitate good racing.

We had the same thing happen the Thursday night show during the '94 HBO weekend - Allstar night. It rained like hell early in the night and in true Eldora fashion they ran the track in before completing the entire program but finished up around 2:00 am. The cars were blistering fast with vapor trails coming off of all of the wings but there was very little passing. Considerable damage was done to two different haulers just trying to get out of the infield after the races!

Unfortunately for Ballou freedom of speech does not protect him in this case. Freedom of speech allows you to say whatever & entitles everyone to their opinion witgwit risk of being thrown in jail. Same thing applies to everyone here. If I went in to my boss's office and spouted off things about them, co worker, or anything that could be deamed harmful to the company's/individual's safety then they are within their rights to terminate employment. They cannot throw me in jail however (unless possibly a life has been threatened but different issue).
Whether Ballou risks his life, or is an independent contractor, or third party contractor is irrelevant. When he or any other driver, owner, or crew member participates in a sanctioned event they are basically stating that they will abide by the rules set forth by the sanctioning body. That is the law and it has been this way for awhile. It is up to the owner's discretion as to when to enforce.
May not like the rule but it is what it is

That is WAY too heavy handed of a penalty, IMO.

Embrace the suck and shut up and color....NASCAR told their drivers to speak their minds today and USAC told theirs to STFU!

I did not think my opinion of USAC could sink any lower. But if they suspended Ballou for complaining about track conditions, then I guess I was wrong. Come home to California, Madman. No prohibitions on griping about crappy tracks here.
