It's that time of year folks......Sunday afternoon sports consists of NHL hockey---my Hawks are out of it, PBA Bowling, and Nascar.

I actually watched the race yesterday from 1/2 way to the end.  I was very surprised at the quality of racing yesterday.  It was actually very good.  If you could look into a crystal ball and tell me 1/2 of the races this year were going to be as competitive as Vegas was yesterday, I would tune in and watch all of them to tell you the truth.

(I still thought Daytona was a pile of garbage like usual)

That's why I watch Formula 1, Supercross and Golf.

It would be pretty hard for one of these drivers to tell their wife "honey, I decided to turn down that quality NASCAR ride and the opportunity to make millions and set our kids up for life because Sprint Cars are that cool".  Only some of these die hards on hoseheads would do that.

I understand that Schatz decided to stay in Sprints when offered a NASCAR ride sometime back.  I forget whether it was open red or winged nation where he mentioned it.

I don't recall that but if it happened I'm guessing they would have wanted him to work his way from ARCA through the trucks and Xfinity.  He probably balked at climbing the ladder in his 40's.  Drivers his age are retiring from NASCAR (aka being forced out by the youth movement).  If he was interested in getting into Cup and making the big bucks he's about 25 years late to that party.  He's around the same age as my middle daughter so 43 or something like that and Jimmy Johnson a 42 year old multi time champion is retiring at the end of this season by way of example.

They might SAY they'd do it, but faced with the opportunity for big $$$, vast majority would take it...Then maybe go sprint car racing for a hobby

Or they could do like Dave Blaney and spend years racing with a start and park NASCAR team and never drive a sprint car...

Dave likely made more money than any Sprint Car driver during the twenty or so years he was in NASCAR.  He might have parked a few times towards the end of his career when the better opportunities dried up but I don't recall him having to do that.  I followed him the entire time he drove in NASCAR but I don't watch all of their races.  Summers are too short in Minnesota to sit indoors on Sunday afternoons.

Which do you think he'll be telling his grandkids about, his open wheel days that included a USAC Silver Crown championship, a Chilli Bowl win, a Kings Royal title, a Knoxville Nationals win, a WoO championship and lots of sprint car wins..... or his 20 years in NASCAR that made him a bunch of money and gave him some top 10 finishes?

You should have seen Duke/NC game last week (or so?) After last 100 games, not only had each team won 50, but the cumulative score was tied. After regulation time ended, still tied. And Duke had to pull off a play i've seen many times, even tried it myself, & don't recall ever seeing it work: intentional missed free throw (MUCH harder than you'd imagine. gotta hit the rim) Duke played slammed it off the rim, came right back to him & he hit a heavily contested 2 pointer. to tie. NC, which is having the worst season I can recall in almost 60 years of watching (losing record), ended up beating Top Ten Duke in OT

NCAA tourney is my favorite sporting event, period.... enjoy! Smile

& OF COURSE your son's games count! So do pickup & Rec league games....

Actually Duke won, but yes, helluva game

Here are his Nascar stats:

Cup:   473 races with 28 top tens

Xfinity:    121 races, 31 top tens, 1 win

Trucks:  3 races, 3 top tens

I would say he has made a little cash over his career.  According to celebritynetworth.com, Dave Blaney has a net worth of 20 million dollars.

Interesting question, but probably all of it.   You would think he would be more proud of his sprint car accomplishments, but I don't know that for sure.   I know he steered his son away from running sprints and right toward NASCAR, but I don't know all of his reasons for that.

He would have never touched that kind of money in Sprint Cars.  Taking a previous post into consideration my guess is that he will tell his grandkids about his Sprint Car career while he takes them to Disney World on his NASCAR money so all of the above and the best of both worlds.

If his grandkids turn out anything like mine they won't get too excited about racing stories.  They don't even look up from their phones when I say "hey, let's go to a race".  The younger generations have lost interest in the automobile.

I would like to think Dave doesn't make decisions for his adult kid s but gives them advice when they ask for it.  Ryan is doing a helluva job and is leading the points after two races.
