Personally, I could do without all these goofy nicknames.  At your local track its ok IMO, but big time racing, like WoO, NO.  You don't see that in Nascar or F1 or Indy Car ior NHRA, sure there are a few, but just a few.    Crowd Pleaser and Pauls to the Walls the worst ever and I'm a big fan of both guys.

How ya figuring that NASCAR drivers don't have goofy nicknames.   They refer to Tony as "Smoke", Dale Jr as "Junebug", and was Dale Sr. not "The Intimidator"?

No nicknames in NASCAR?   Since when?    Smoke, Junebug, The Intimidator, I think Sliced Bread for Logano?, Five Time for Johnson (now Seven Time obviously).    Think I've even heard NASCAR announcers call Larson by Yung Money.

I assumed McMahon approved of the nickname since he has it on shirts and stickers, etc.  I've seen a bunch in the stands so it might be worth it financially to put up with a stupid nickname.

I have to agree with you. 'Awesome Bill from Dawsonville'. How much beer was consumed to come up with that?

I'm kind of partial to "THE MADMAN", KERRY MADSEN.

Why doesn't Ian have a good nickname?  "Mad man's little brother" wouldn't quite do him justice.

I've heard other folks call him "Insane Ian" the last couple of years, and I've taken to calling him that at Jackson. I'm sure Gibson will come up with something for him next year, either the same or something new.

I dunno. Madman sounds like somebody who's going to get pissed and drive the car accordingly. Insane Ian sounds like somebody who would have a crazy laugh..... and like B-mods. (Sorry)

I'd say that 75% of tracks have a "flying farmer".

There's a 360 racer from NY called the "flying physician" because he's a Dr.

I once witnessed him pull a slider in 3 in 4 that had no chance, bounce off the wall, gather it in and still pass the guy later in the race to win.

To me, that night he earned it! I love watching both those guys race.

Also I believe they call Harvick either "Happy Harvick" or The Closer, I believe Kyle Busch has been refered to as Wild Thang before and some other explicitives before. I remember before they called Tony smoke he was the Rushville Rocket, Before intimadatory they called Earnhardt Iron Head, and they used to call Gordon the Boy Wonder.

As far as sprint cars go I have always liked both Blaney's nicknames. The Buckeye Bullet for Dave and The Lowrider for Dale.

Lady Lighting (Paige Polyak) is the only nickname I've ever heard for a woman racer.

A local racer nickname that falls way short of the goal line:  Kenny, "One of the boys from Nunda", Hansen. That sounds like a name for a Country, Reggae, Metal, Folk band. I do not want to buy that CD!

What are some of the better racer nicknames in your area?

The announcer, who's name I don't remember was terrible, but always remember "one of the boys from Nunda"  I didn't go to Husets that often(from Winnipeg) but remember it well..

It’s Dyno ....

By the way here’s a five page thread from 2011 that should help with a few nicknames.

I’m sorry you thought the announcer, who’s name was Denny Oviatt, was terrible. He announced my beloved Lake County Speedway as well as Husets Speedway for many, many years. Had a true voice for It as well in my opinion and was the nicest man you’ll ever meet. But to each his own. As well, I thought Kenny Hansen’s One of the Boys From Nunda nickname fit, if ya knew him, the town of Nunda, SD, or those that live there. A true racer, who, in the early 90’s, ran the alphabet at the Knoxville Nationals as a local, but the feat mostly went unnoticed as he fell one spot shy of the A main. He and Fran Bruns, “Tonight We Ride in the Rawhide #18 sprinter from Madison, SD (as I heard Mr Oviatt call out every race night), Bonzai’s big brother, had some amazing battles in the 80’s and 90’s.

I remember the Iron Head and Boy Wonder things.   I even remember Handsome Harry Gant!

Never been a big fan of nicknames but sometimes they do fit. Some of the nicknames make the guy sound like he is the greatest thing going. When he is hot they seem ok but when he is struggling they really are out of place. I am much more in favor of the race car having a name such as "Old Yeller: The Black Duece" or the Tamale Wagon". Why is it we don't hear that anymore.
