Wednesdays with Wayne – Sixth in Sedalia!

(Bill W) August 26, 2015 – Wayne Johnson has been suffering with an illness since the Knoxville Nationals, but he managed a solid sixth place finish last weekend in his #77x at the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia.  The Knoxville, Iowa driver has been suffering from bronchitis.

Wayne talked about racing at Sedalia.  “The car was way better than me.  I’ve been sick ever since Friday night of the Nationals.  It’s just got worse and worse.  That sucks. That’s all I can say…the car was better than me.”

A stroke of luck saw him draw the pole for his heat amongst the 35-car field.  He made the most of his draw. “We were good in the heat,” says Wayne.  “It helped to start up front, obviously.  We got out in clean air and did what we had to do to win it.”

A special Dash was run and was lined up based on passing points.  “That gave us enough points to start eighth in the Dash,” says Wayne.  “We were able to pick up a couple of spots and get to sixth.”

Starting sixth, Wayne was able to maintain despite a tire issue.  “We were able to get up as far as fourth,” he says. “We had a left rear tire shrink.  We went out with ten inches of stagger and came in with 12 ¼.  The car was a little free anyway, but with the tire, the car just got really loose.  Like I said, the driver wasn’t up to par either.”

It was the first race in three years in Sedalia, and Wayne was impressed with the track conditions for the main event.  “It didn’t look like the track was going to be much for the feature.  It shocked me how good it really was. That’s part of the game.”
