Dirt Cup Night 1

The 44th Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Jack in the Box kicked in fine style as Washington’s Jason Solwold notched his sixth victory of 2015 and first against the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

Chasing Kyle Bellm for the first 11 rounds, contact with the slower car put the No. 14k pit side, giving the No. 18 the top spot. From there, the Burlington, Wash. native led a podium charge of Washington drivers to the checkered flag.

“I just tried to get to the front as quick as I could. Lapped traffic as pretty hairy, and it got a little dirty going through a bunch of cars like that. It happens, but I have to give a hats off to all our local guys here that didn’t get beat,” commented Solwold. “Our local guys are pretty strong so we’ll definitely give them a run for their money and a couple guys that ended up back there a ways will pick it up tomorrow and maybe we’ll have a local top-five.”

Falling back one on the start, fifth starting Colton Heath spent much of the night’s feature battling through the top-five with restarts on Lap 11 and 23 proving effective for the No. 33x.

“It’s awesome running top-three with all the local guys here. We’ve been battling each other all year,” said Heath. “I was able to get Taylor running the bottom to middle area, I just didn’t need Jason to be there at the end for me to do anything because I wasn’t really good on the top but we’ll take it, we’ll move on, and hopefully have us in good position after tomorrow.”

Holding off several charges from Wayne Johnson throughout the closing laps, Taylor Malsam put the Rudeen Racing No. 26 on the final podium step, “It was fun. We had a great car tonight, just a little free on the bottom and just picked up what we could. It’s hard to pass here and Colton got by me because of my error, but overall it’s a good points night going into the weekend.”

Taking advantage of a bobble on the part of Seth Bergman on Lap 21, Wayne Johnson brought the City Vending No. 77x home fourth. Seth recovered, but would see his night end on Lap 23 due to contact with the wall. Aaron Reutzel would come from 12th to complete the top-five.

Jared Peterson crossed sixth with California’s Willie Croft in tow. Trever Kirland slipped from the pole to hold onto eighth with Travis Rilat ninth from 15th and defending Dirt Cup Champion, Brock Lemely coming from 19th to finish tenth.

Bringing 51 drivers to the Skagit Speedway, seven Heat Races went to Jared Peterson, Jason Solwold, Wayne Johnson, Colton Heath, Matt Covington, Seth Bergman, and Kyle Bellm. B-Features went to Robbie Price and Jordan Weaver.

Points to qualify into Saturday’s Dirt Cup feature event have Solwold leading with 275 points. Colton Heath earned 267 with Tayler Malsam third at 257 markers. All drivers will compete again on Friday with both preliminary night totals added together to determine the Saturday lineups.

Friday, June 26 at the Skagit Speedway will see action getting underway at 7:00 P.M (PT). More information can be found athttp://www.skagitspeedway.com. For continued updates on the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, log onto http://www.ascsracing.com.

My first time to Skagit, not sure how the drivers can see anything. From my seat in turn four the dust was so thick could not see from entry to one until exit of two.

Bergman Wins Dirt Cup Night 2

6/26/15

Alger, WA – The second night of the 44th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Jack in the Box saw local favorite turned national invader Seth Bergman standing tall as the winner at the end of the 25 lap Lucas Oil ASCS National Series Main Event.

Jordan Weaver and Berg occupied the front row on the start of the main event, with Weaver leading lap one as the two traded moves in both sets of corners. Seth took to the outside on lap two clearing Jordan in what would be the race winning pass, establishing a lead that would hold up despite cautions over the course of the race. Despite heavy slower traffic looming, the Snohomish, WA native made the correct choice at each turn in collecting the win, his third of the year with the series. Jason Solwold collected second after winning on night number one. Last year’s Dirt Cup Champion Brock Lemley made a last lap pass of Weaver to grab third. Heat race winners were Travis Rilat, Luke Didiuk, Eric Fisher, Weaver, Aaron Reutzel, Willie Croft and Lemley. Split b features were won by Derek Roberts and Colton Heath. 51 cars signed in for competition.

Tristin Thomas was victorious in the Northwest Focus Midget series main event. The Burlington teenager led all twenty laps, turning away Ryan Cully and Lance Sargent on multiple restarts to pick off the victory. Cully and Sargent rounded out the podium for the 16 car field. Thomas and Sargent won the heat races.

Night 3 of the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Jack in the Box will once again feature Lucas Oil ASCS National Series racing for $15,000 to win as well as the Shipwreck Beads Modifieds. Ticket information is available at http://www.skagitspeedway.com .

Solwold Wins Dirt Cup 44

6/27/15

Jason Solwold added the final piece to his Skagit Speedway resume’ by winning the 44th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Jack in the Box. Solwold led all 40 laps of the main event and collected $15,000 for his effort.

It wasn’t completely smooth sailing for the Burlington, WA driver who lives just two miles from the Speedway. With the stars and cars of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series in town, Solwold would be pressured nearly all race long by a variety of drivers. Tayler Malsam sat on the outside pole to Jason and closed the gap on his a few times before Willie Croft made his way to second. The race went for a long stretch without stoppage, as Jason navigated slower cars with Croft hot on his tail. A lap 29 caution for Jordan Weaver bunched the field up, but Solwold was again up to this task, keeping Willie at bay. A red flag on lap 34 for Skylar Gee reset the field again, but Croft again could not find room around Solwold. The final stoppage came on lap 36 for a Wayne Johnson flip. On the restart, Jason motored away while Aaron Reutzel passed Croft, but as the checkered flag fell, it was Solwold and the Shaylen Raye Motorsports team picking their first Dirt Cup Win. Reutzel advanced from 10th to second with Croft taking third. B Main events were won by Gee and Mark Duperron.

The Shipwreck Bead Modifieds were the support division on the program. Mark Carrell won the main event with little challenge, dominating the 25 lap main. Tom Sweatman and Lawrence O’Connor battled it out for second in an entertaining duel, with Sweatman pulling ahead at the end. O’Connor and Carrell won the heats.

Colby Copeland Wins Speedweek Northwest Round #1 At Yreka With Late Race Pass
By Ben Deatherage
The 2015 edition of Speedweek Northwest would official get underway at Yreka, California's Siskiyou Motor Speedway on Sunday June 28th. A packed house would be in attendance to watch an action packed show. Twenty-three cars would sign in on the registration sheets representing California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and the Australian state of New South Wales.

Visalia's Steven Tiner took advantage of his pole starting position to take the lead on lap one. The fourth generation driver, in his Wright Processing Systems/Larry Davis Farms/Tech9 Chassis/Stewart Ranch #94 Tech9, would start to receive some pressure by Kyle Hirst. Hirst, in the Scott and Jason Finley owned Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim, eventually made the pass on Tiner on lap six. Hirst, looking forward to his fourth straight win at Yreka, would start to check out but would start to become threatened by challengers in lapped traffic.

Every time it looked like the Chico chauffeur, of Hirst, would be about to lose the lead a yellow would come out taking traffic out of the picture for the moment. Hirst was very good on the restarts but the final one on lap twenty-one presented an opportunity for Roseville ace Colby Copeland to get in front. Copeland, in the Jim and Anette Van Lare owned Bianchi Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing/Van Lare Steering Repair #5V A.R.T., seized the moment out of turn two on lap twenty-two and got to the coveted position.

From there the race would remain green and Copeland would even extend his lead to cruise to the checkered flag. It would be the first win for Colby in his first start with the Western Sprint Tour and his fifth overall of the year. Copeland also became the thirtieth different Speedweek Northwest winner in ninety-three races.

Kyle Hirst held on to second while Steven Tiner finished third. The balance of the top five would consist of the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/P.M. Truck Repair/Trex Plastic Decking #31C A.R.T. of Justyn Cox from Clarksburg, in fourth, and to make it an all California top five Roseville's Sean Becker in the Dan and Cindi Menne owned Cherry Street Mini Storage/Mike's Hard Lemonade/Ponybracket.com/Shark Manufacturing #75 Maxim.

Heat races were won by Justyn Cox, the Rocket Designs/Auto Stitch Embroidery/BC Motorsports/Parker Racing Engines #11 KPC of Roger Crockett from Medford, Oregon, and Puyallup, Washington's Trey Starks in his Starks Timber Processing/Southland Equipment Limited/MASCO Petroleum/T&C Concepts #55 J&J. Garen Linder, of Central Point, Oregon was the winner of the consolation feature in the Linder Powdercoating/Visual EFX & Design/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC. As mentioned above Steven Tiner was the victor of the trophy dash which put him on the pole for the main event.

The Western Sprint Tour venture's to Southern Oregon Speedway in White City for the second round of Speedweek Northwest on Monday June 29th. Tickets for the race include $15.00 for Adults, $12.00 for Seniors and Vets, $10.00 for Juniors, and Children 6 and under are FREE. Colby Copeland Makes Another Late Race Pass To Win Round #2 Of Speedweek Northwest
By Ben Deatherage
It was another electrifying night of racing for the Western Sprint Tour for the second race of the 2015 Speedweek Northwest for the Monday June 29th midweek race. With temperatures nearing the one-hundred degree mark the crowd at Southern Oregon Speedway would be on their feet the entire time during the main event. Twenty-eight drivers were in attendance representing the states of Oregon, California, Washington, and Montana as well as the countries of New Zealand and Australia.

Roseville, California young gun Colby Copeland was the leader in the opening lap of the main event in the Jim and Anette Van Lare owned Bianchi Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing/Van Lare Steering Repair #5V A.R.T. As the field approached lapped traffic Roger Crockett would make an exciting pass on lap eight.

Crockett, in his Rocket Designs/Auto Stitch Embroidery/BC Motorsports/Parker Racing Engines #11 KPC, seemed to have the field the field covered but Copeland would not let him out of his sight. The only caution to occur during the race would be on lap nine which bunched the field up one last time.

With the long green flag run it would bring lapped traffic back into the picture. With just a few laps remaining Colby Copeland would make a daring move on lap twenty-six out of turn two as Crockett briefly got held up to take back the lead. It would be the second straight victory for Copeland as he has won the first two nights of the Speedweek.

Roger Crockett was second followed by the Scott and Jason Finley owned Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim of Chico, California driver Kyle Hirst. Sean Becker, out of Roseville, California and driving the Dan and Cindi Menne owned Cherry Street Mini Storage/Mike's Hard Lemonade/PonyBracket.com/Shaver Specialties #75 Maxim, would end the night fourth after starting twelfth and the Wright Processing Systems/Larry Davis Farms/Tech9 Chassis/Stewart Ranch #94 Tech9 of Steven Tiner from Visalia, California was fifth and started fourteenth.

Roger Crockett was fast time of the night while heat races were won by Kyler Barraza of Roseburg in the Barraza Racing/Oregon Tool & Supply/Hedge Carter Gutter Service #87 Maxim, Snohomish, Washington's Seth Bergman in his Oilfield Equipment Manufacturing/Corridor Electric/Young Tool Company/Wesmar Racing Engines #23 Eagle, Colby Copeland, and Kyle Hirst. Kyler Barraza won the trophy to land the pole starting position for the main event and winning the consolation feature was Vern Wheeler Jr., of Central Point, in the Alliance Trucking/In & Out Gardens/Augie's Fiberglass & Boat/Richie Rich & The Tin Pimp Customs #21W JEI.

Colby Copeland Wins Round #3 Of Speedweek Northwest To Make It Three In A Row
By Ben Deatherage
Coos Bay Speedway would offer perfect weather conditions on Tuesday June 30th versus the extreme hot temperatures experienced by drivers, teams, and even race fans in the last few days. The coastal venue hosted the third round of the 2015 Speedweek Northwest sanctioned by the Western Sprint Tour. A total of twenty-four cars would be in the pit area representing the states of Oregon, California, Washington, and Montana as well as the country of New Zealand.

Right off of the bat a close race for the lead would erupt in the main event. Visalia, California's Steven Tiner and the Dave Smith Motorsports/Powdercoating Inc./DCSigns.ca #17 Maxim of Cam Smith, from Mill Creek, Washington, would battle hard for the position. Smith would lead the first lap but surrendered the spot on lap two.

From their Tiner would construct a decent size lead separating himself from the main body of the field. But a red flag incident on lap seven would bunch the field up for the only time of the feature. Tiner would do well once the racing resumed but with no more incidents occurring it would put lapped traffic into the picture.

Getting a little too high in turn three on lap eighteen the Wright Processing Systems/Larry Davis Farms/Tech9 Chassis/Stewart Ranch #94 Tech9, of Tiner, would lose the coveted position to Colby Copeland. Copeland, from Roseville, California, had the field covered even though there were a couple of times when he would be briefly held up in traffic. It wouldn't matter for the driver of the Jim and Annette Van Lare owned Bianchi Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing/Van Lare Steering Repair #5V A.R.T.

Colby would hold on the rest of the way to win his third victory with the Western Sprint Tour's Speedweek Northwest. Unfortunately due to prior commitments he will miss the remainder of the Speedweek but plans to make it all next year.

Cam Smith would end the night second while the Starks Timber Processing/Southland Equipment Limited/MASCO Petroleum/T&C Concepts #55 J&J of Puyallup, Washington's Trey Starks was able to finish third at the line. Steven Tiner got fourth followed by Roger Crockett of Medford in his Rocket Designs/Auto Stitch Embroidery/BC Motorsports/Parker Racing Engines #11 KPC in fifth.

The Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex Plastic Decking/P.M. Truck Repair #31C A.R.T. of
Justyn Cox, out of Clarksburg, California, was the quick time award winner and heat races were won by Cam Smith, Colby Copeland, and Roger Crockett. Steven Tiner won the trophy dash to earn the pole starting position in the main. Roseburg's Kyler Barraza would win the consolation feature in his Barraza Motorsports/Oregon Tool & Supply/Hedge Carter Gutter Service #87 Maxim.

The Western Sprint Tour will take Wednesday July 1st off before getting back to the Speedweek Northwest trail on Thursday the 2nd at Willamette Speedway. Prices are Adults $16.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $13.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $8.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE. Racing is scheduled to get underway around 6:30 PM. Bergman Holds On To Win Wild Willamette Speedweek Race #4
By Ben Deatherage
After taking Wednesday July 1st off for traveling drivers and teams were pumped to get back to racing on Thursday the 2nd. The venue would be Willamette Speedway for the four fourth round of Speedweek Northwest. Thirty cars were in the pits representing Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Montana as well as the nations of Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

Roger Crockett, of Medford, would seize the lead in his Rocket Designs/Auto Stitch Embroidery/BC Motorsports/Parker Racing Engines #11 KPC. Setting sail and cruising out in front he would lose the lead on lap twelve only for the yellow to come out and Roger would get the position back. The driver to make the move was the Oilfield Equipment Manufacturing/Corridor Electric/Young Tool Company #23 Eagle driven by Seth Bergman from Snohomish, Washington.

It would not be too long after the lap eleven restart that Bergman would pressure Crockett again. Working in some thick traffic Bergman would get around Crockett again on lap eighteen. Just as the battle was about to resume a caution was out on lap twenty-three. On the restart Crockett made a very impressive move on lap twenty-four driving past Bergman only to give it back due to a caution. Bergman would hold off Crockett despite some massive pressure to win his first Speedweek Northwest victory.

Roger Crockett was second while the Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim, of Chico, California's Kyle Hirst, would get third for car owners Scott and Jason Finley. Steven Tiner from Visalia, California would post a fourth place result in his Wright Processing Systems/Larry Davis Farms/Tech9 Chassis/Stewart Ranch #94 Tech9 and finishing the top five in fifth was the Jim & Annette Van Lare owned Bianke Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing #5V A.R.T. driven by Colby Copeland of Roseville, California. Copeland's original plans were to race in Montana but decided to stay and try and win some more races.

Roger Crockett would set a new track record in time trials at 12.116 seconds and also won the trophy dash to earn the pole position in the feature. Heat races were won by Seth Bergman, Kyle Hirst, the All Star Powdercoating/Corban Learning Center #21 KPC of Colfax, California's Colby Wiesz, and Billings, Montana pilot Phil Dietz in his Prevost Racing/Dietz Auto Inc,/Pacific Steel & Recycling/Staley's Automotive #72 Maxim. The Jacob Daniels Attorney at Law/All Seasons Equipment/Oregon State Representative Cedric Ross Hayden/LaChance Kofoid Enterprises #5D KPC of Patrick Dills from Cottage Grove won the consolation feature.

Cottage Grove Speedway will be the site of the final two races of Speedweek Northwest. The historic 1/4-mile clay oval will have racing on Friday July 3rd and Saturday the 4th. After all of the races on Saturday night there will be a massive fireworks show.

For each night the Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 4:00, and Racing starts at 6:45. Ticket prices per event are Adults $15.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $13.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $8.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE. Justyn Cox Wins Caution Free Speedweek Northwest Race #5 At CGS By A Nose
By Ben Deatherage
Cottage Grove Speedway would host the Western Sprint Tour sanctioned Speedweek Northwest on Friday July 3rd. It would be the fifth race of the Speedweek and the first of two nights at the historical 1/4-mile clay oval. A total of twenty-five cars would show up in the pit area representing Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Montana as well as the countries of Australia and New Zealand. The feature would go non-stop without any cautions.

Trey Starks would grab the initial race lead and looked like he got shot out of a cannon. The Puyallup, Washington teenager would spend the majority of the time on the bottom of the race track and had no issues with lapped traffic. But towards the end of the race he would have to abandon the low line in order to clear some of the slower traffic. Utilizing the top of the track the Starks Timber Processing/Southland Equipment Limited/MASCO Petroleum/Blue Dot Fabrication #55 J&J would risk giving up ground from the cars behind him in order to get by a few back markers.

It was a perfect opportunity for Clarksburg, California's Justyn Cox. Cox, in his Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/P.M. Truck Repair/Trex Plastic Decking #31C A.R.T. would continue to roll on the bottom and caught Starks eventually passing him on lap twenty-six. Cox attempted to create some distance but Starks would get the elbows up and tried to hunt him down late in the race.

Headed into the final turns Cox continued to stay low but was slowed down briefly by a lapped car. Starks tossed the dice one last time and made a bonsai run on the top and the two of them came to the stripe neck and neck. At the end Cox would beat Starks out by a mere 0.005 seconds. It would mark the first time that Cox has ever won during Speedweek Northwest.

Trey Starks was second followed by the Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim driver by Chico ,California's Kyle Hirst, for car owners Scott and Jason Finley, in third. The balance of the top five would consist of the Jim and Annette Van Lare owned Bianchi Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing/Van Lare Steering Repair #5V A.R.T., driven by Colby Copeland from Roseville, California, in fourth while behind him in fifth was Central Point's Garen Linder in his Linder Powdercoating/Visual EFX & Designs/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC.

Trey Starks was fast time of the night and also won the trophy dash to earn the pole starting position in the feature. Heat races were won by Colby Copeland, Kyle Hirst, and the Prevost Racing/Dietz Auto Inc./Cascade Steel & Recycling/Staley's Automotive #72 Maxim driven by Phil Dietz of Billings, Montana. The consolation feature winner was Snohomish, Washington's Jared Ridge in his Ridge Runner Wings/Snohomish Auto Parts/Racers For Christ/Rodgers Racing Engines #12 machine.

Cottage Grove Speedway will host the sixth and final round of the 2015 Speedweek Northwest on Independence Day on Saturday July 4th. The main event feature is $5,000.00 to win and Kyle Hirst has a two point advantage over Colby Copeland while a massive fireworks display will cap the whole night off. Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 4:00, and Racing starts at 6:45. Ticket are Adults $15.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $13.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $8.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE. ELMA, Wash. (July 3, 2015) For the third time in four nights of racing in the Pacific Northwest, Burlington, Washington’s Jason Solwold stood in Victory Lane with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network; topping the opening night of the Fred Brownfield Classic presented by Little Creek Casino at the Grays Harbor Raceway.

Holding off the charge of Johnny Herrera through slower traffic in the closing laps, Solwold crossed 0.602 seconds ahead of the MVT No. 45x.

“Our car was pretty good, but usually we’re a little bit better towards the end of the A-Main, but in the beginning of the race, we were really good so I think I may have cooked the Left Rear off just a little bit too much skating through the middle,” said Jason. “I just have to thank my guys; my cousin Travis, owner Mike, Ed, my Dad, Mel they have just have the car perfect so it makes my job so easy.”

Challenged on the opening lap by Travis Jacobson, the Scottie’s Plumbing No. 18 shot to the point with a high-side pass on the No. 44h. The Lake Stevens shoe challenged again on a Lap 2 caution, but would ride runner-up until Lap 14 when problems in the rear differential put the No. 44h to the infield.

Crossing second was not without a few hits for Herrera, who avoided catastrophe twice trying to race through the field, “I got slid, I think by the No. 7 car, and I’m sure he’s not happy but I had to hit the brakes, turn him loose, and let him go. I wasn’t trying to take anyone out. That’s why they put brake pedals in these cars. We got close, he made the choice, and I’m sorry but that’s a part of racing.”

Able to run down Solwold toward the end, Johnny commented on the run saying, “I think he was a little better on the start, but the longer we would run, the better we got but we’ll take second; that locks us in to tomorrow so here we go.

Making his 100th Lucas Oil ASCS A-Feature start, Aaron Reutzel had to dodge a few crashes coming from 10th for his 21st career podium with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“I just had to miss all the wrecks there and make it through, but I was just a little too tight tonight,” said Aaron. “It was getting better and better as the race when on; just needed a longer run but hey, another podium finish for this team is definitely what we needed to get locked into tomorrow.”

Wayne Johnson muscled his way from seventh to fourth and is the final lock-in for Saturday’s A-Feature. Seth Bergman came from 11th to complete the top-five.

In his first National Tour start of the 2015 season, Dustin Morgan drove the Kris Miller owned No. 33 to a sixth place finish followed by reigning Grays Harbor track champion, Evan Margeson, with J.J. Hickle from 13th to eighth. Flipped during his Heat Race, Blake Hahn came from 14th to fifth in the B-Feature, then charged from 21st to ninth with Cam Smith rounding out the top-ten.

With 31 drivers drawing in, four Heat Races went to Henry Van Dam, Dustin Morgan, Wayne Johnson, and Travis Jacobson. The B-Feature was won by Jordan Weaver. The final starting spot of the A-Feature was Matt Covington who utilized a provisional.

The Fred Brownfield Classic at the Grays Harbor Raceway continues on Independence Day with gates opening at 5:00 P.M. (PT). Races will get underway around 8:00 P.M. to allow the sun to set for the safety of the drivers.

Roger Crockett Wins $5,000.00 Speedweek Finale At CGS; Colby Copeland Wins Speedweek Northwest Title
By Ben Deatherage
The final leg of the 2015 Speedweek Northwest would see the Western Sprint Tour be back at Cottage Grove Speedway on Independence Day Saturday July 4th. A jammed pack house of fans would be in attendance for the night and the racing would be stellar from start to finish. A total of twenty-four entries would sign in representing Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Montana as well as the nations of Australia and New Zealand. The finale main event would pay $5,000.00 to the winner.

A great battle for the lead would be waged for the top spot with three lead changes in the first lap. Kyle Hirst, from Chico, California in the Scott and Jason Finley owned Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim, would pace the field on the first lap but lost the position on the following lap to Trey Starks, Starks, of Puyallup, Washington and driving his Starks Timber Processing/Southland Equipment Limited/MASCO Petroleum/T&C Concepts #55 J&J, would have brief control of the spot as he would give the lead back to Hirst on lap three.

A couple of cautions would keep the field bunched up tight and disallowed Hirst from constructing a massive interval even though he seemed very fast. Hirst would receive quite a bit of pressure after a lap twelve restart. Roger Crockett would chase him down and get by him on lap sixteen.

Crockett would be threatened a little bit by Hirst but unfortunately Hirst would get into the front stretch wall on lap twenty-three. A few more restarts gave challengers some ammunition to overtake Crockett but the Rocket Designs/Auto Stitch Embroidery/BC Motorsports/Parker Racing Engines #11 KPC, of Crockett, was just a little bit faster. Crockett would win the feature to earn his first win of the week, his nineteenth career Speedweek victory, and the sixth time he has won a Speedweek race at CGS.

The Wright Processing Systems/Larry Davis Farms/Tech9 Chassis/Stewart Ranch #94 Tech9 of Steven Tiner from Visalia, California was second and Phil Dietz, from Billings, Montana, managed to earn an impressive third in his Prevost Racing/Dietz Auto Inc./Pacific Steel & Recycling/Staley's Automotive #72 Maxim. The rest of the top five would be made up of the Jim and Anette Van Lare owned Bianchi Farms/Cameron & Cameron Vineyard & Ranch Supplies/Kyle Larson Racing/Van Lare Steering Repair #5V A.R.T. driven by Roseville, California's Colby Copeland, in fourth, and Justyn Cox, of Clarksburg, California, was fifth in his Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/P.M. Truck Repair/Trex Plastic Decking #31C A.R.T.

Trey Starks would be fast time of the night and Kyle Hirst earned the pole starting position of the feature after winning the trophy dash. Heat winners were Colby Copeland, Central Point's Garen Linder in his Linder Powedercoating/Visual EFX & Designs/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC, and Steven Tiner. The American Wall Covering/Rocky Mountain Collision/American Truss Systems/Schwanke Racing Engines #12P Eagle of Meridan, Idaho pilot Randy Pierce would be victorious in the consolation feature.

Colby Copeland would be declared the 2015 Speedweek Northwest champion after winning the first three events and posting six top five finishes in all six starts. It marked the eleventh time that a Californian has won Speedweek. He joins Steve Kent, a four-time winner, and Brent Kaeding, a two-time winner, as well as Bud Kaeding, Brad Furr, Kyle Larson, and Kyle Hirst. Kyle Hirst was second in points followed by Roger Crockett, Steven Tiner, and Justyn Cox.

The Western Sprint Tour will prepare for the Ore-Cal Challenge in the month of August for their next two races. It will start off with a $5,000.00 to win main event at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka, California on Friday August 14th and then they will cross the border on Saturday the 15th to visit Southern Oregon Speedway. ELMA, Wash. (July 4, 2015) Johnny Herrera lived up to his nickname on Saturday night as on track fireworks were plenty. With the MAVTV cameras rolling at Grays Harbor Raceway, the man known as “Hollywood” picked up his first Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network victory of the 2015 season.

Last topping the Lucas Oil ASCS at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial on September 28, 2013 at the Lucas Oil Speedway, Herrera snapped a 66 race steak without a National Tour win, coming from fifth to win the inaugural Fred Brownfield Classic presented by Little Creek Casino.

Working to second on Lap 5, Herrera commented on the start of the feature, “When we started the race, it’s a deal where as a driver you never quite know where to go. The top was a lot further around in turns three and four so I tired running the bottom at the beginning and it wasn’t working, so I thought heck, let’s go to the top and try that and it actually played out and worked well for us. That’s where the fast part of the racetrack was there at the end.”

Working a great battle with J.J. Hickle to get the top spot, Herrera’s pass came at the line on the seventh round. Not able to gain much breathing room, the top-five was a tight battle from the start. Finding traffic by Lap 10, pressure began to mount as Hickle was chased by Jason Solwold and Jared Peterson with Seth Bergman and Wayne Johnson closing in fast.

Dicing through traffic, the race was anyone’s to win as the leaders picked lapped cars at either end of the Grays Harbor Raceway. Putting a trio of lappers between himself and second place, the caution flew as the field worked on Lap 26 for Steve Reeves.

Reverting back to the last fully completed lap, Herrera pulled away as the race for the podium took everyone’s attention. Restarting fifth, Oklahoma’s Wayne Johnson worked two-for-one through the first two turns. Sticking low on the lead pack, the City Vending No. 77x was not done there, tearing through turns three and four with a five-car slide among lapped cars to take the runner-up spot.

“I just got frustrated. I felt like we got raced dirty there a couple times and figured, if they can do it, we can do it. I just threw the wing back and said the hell with them,” commented Johnson on his final run to second. “You know, overall the racetrack was just beautiful. “Slim” did an awesome job. This thing had way more grip that it did last night with this sun and wind. He did a remarkable job to have two and three lanes…but I just started playing with that middle line and for some reason, I can always get my car to rotate through there and stick. Just need a little more drive on exit.”

Bouncing around the top-five the entire race, Jason Solwold put the Mike Anderson No. 18 on the final podium step, his lowest finish with the National Tour in the series five races across Washington, “We just changed some gear and maybe changed it a little too much so we weren’t quite as good as last night, but we’ll take third. We had a good week so we’ll hold our head high. Some days are good, some days are not so good. Today was mediocre.”

Utilizing the final restart to charge from seventh, Colton Heath crossed fourth after starting 15th. J.J. Hickle ended up fifth after restarting second on Lap 25.

Jared Peterson was sixth with Seth Bergman slipping to seventh in the closing laps. The cause of the caution on the opening lap, Aaron Reutzel was a house of fire coming through the field from 23rd to eighth with Travis Jacobson and Henry Van Dam completing the top-ten.

With 32 drivers making the trip for night two of the Fred Brownfield Classic, four Heat Races went to Blake Hahn, Henry Van Dam, Eric Fisher, and Travis Jacobson. The night’s B-Feature was won by Reece Goetz. A promoter’s provisional was given to Jay Cole.

The Lucas Oil ASCS presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network works next to the state of Montana with the Electric City Speedway on July 17 and Billings Motorsports Park on July 18.
