CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS AT BAKERSFIELD SATURDAY!

(Torrance, CA, June 16, 2015)  For the third time in the 2015 season, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series will return to “The West’s Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval,” the Bakersfield Speedway this Saturday night, June 20th.  The race will be the third of four scheduled for the traveling group at Bakersfield this year.

Current point leader Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita and Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes have split the first two main events at Bakersfield in 2015.  Michnowicz scored a dramatic win at the first race when he stole the lead from Northern California’s Scott Kenney coming off the final turn for the first place trophy on March 21st.  Nunes won in the last appearance on April 25th when he beat Michnowicz to the checkered flag in the 20-lap main event.

Michnowicz and Nunes can expect a stiff challenge from several competitors on Saturday, most notably Alex Grigoreas of Upland and Fort Irwin’s Jeffrey Dyer.  Grigoreas and Dyer, who were teammates the past two seasons, have consistently run up front all season long.  Through the first seven races of the campaign, Grigoreas is the only other driver besides Michnowicz and Nunes to etch his name on the victory ledger after scoring a win at the Santa Maria Raceway on May 9th.  Michnowicz leads the series with four wins and Nunes has two.

Two-time and defending CLS champion Michnowicz is dominating the championship chase and will bring a whopping 122-point lead over Grigoreas into Saturday’s event.  Dyer is third and is breathing down Grigoreas’ neck as he is only 17-points out of second.  Placentia’s Dan Hillberg is fourth, but he is feeling the heat from San Bernardino’s James Heling.  Having the best season of his career, Heling has closed to within 5-points of Hillberg.

Chino’s Pat Kelley leads the “Rookie of the Year” standings.

Joining the CLS on Saturday’s card will be the Modifieds, SportMods, Hobby Stocks, IMCA Stock Cars and the NMRA ¾ Midgets.   Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM with racing at 6:00.
