Henderson Doubles Up at Knoxville!

by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, May 23, 2015 – Justin Henderson put his name into the record books, becoming the first driver since Brian Brown a year ago to win both the 360 and 410 features in one night at the Knoxville Raceway.  The 410 win on Saturday night was worth $3,000 and was also the Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s driver’s second in that class in as many weeks.  Devin Kline completed the night’s winners’ list with a 305 victory.

Brian Brown, who started fourth in the 410 feature, shot to the early lead in the 20-lapper. Henderson settled into second, with Danny Lasoski grabbing third from Bill Balog on lap two. Brown separated himself from the field and entered heavy lapped traffic at the halfway point. Though Henderson saw some gains through the middle stages, it looked as if Brown would not be headed.

Unfortunately for Brown, his motor expired on lap 12 and he helplessly pulled into the infield. Henderson assumed the lead, as Lasoski, Tim Kaeding and Kerry Madsen dueled wildly for second, third and fourth.

The only stoppage of the event came on lap 15, when Matt Covington, making his first career 410 start, flipped in turn two.  He was uninjured.  The restart with five to go, saw Henderson leading Lasoski, Kaeding, Kerry Madsen and Davey Heskin back to green.  While the duel for second, third and fourth stayed heated, Henderson would pull away in the BDS Motorsports #1 for his eighth career 410 win.  Kerry Madsen went from fourth to second in the last three laps, and was followed to the stripe by Lasoski, Kaaeding and Terry McCarl.  Davey Heskin, Dusty Zomer, Brooke Tatnell, Ian Madsen and hard-charger, Mark Dobmeier rounded out the top ten.

Brown set quick time, while Dustin Selvage, Dobmeier, Tatnell and Zomer won heat races.  Terry McCarl won the B main.

“The track was really tricky,” said Henderson in Victory Lane.  “Historically, I struggle at a track like this, but Bryan (Sundby) puts a really good car underneath me.  Danny obviously had a really good car, and Brian had us all beat.  My hat’s off to ‘Brownie’ for having a good car and running up front. It was bad luck for him, but we’ll take advantage, the money and the trophy.  I’m really proud of this team.”

Henderson led Matt Moro and Nate Van Haaften early in the 15-lap 360 main event.  Van Haaften used the low side to shoot by Moro to take over second on lap five.  Clint Garner was also on the move, and shot into third on lap seven.  Henderson worked through traffic easily, but when Sawyer Phillips got into the turn two wall on lap 14, it put Van Haaften back on his bumper.  Henderson was never headed, however, on the way to his fourth career 360 victory here.

Garner made a last corner pass of Van Haaften for second.  That pair was followed by Tony Shilling and Jon Agan.  Moro, hard-charger Aaron Reutzel, Joe Beaver, Casey Friedrichsen and Russ Hall rounded out the top ten.  Reutzel, who was disqualified for the wrong right rear tire in qualifying, stormed from 22nd to seventh.  Garner posted quick time of the night, while Calvin Landis, Van Haaften, Jamie Ball and Randy Martin won heat races.  Ricky Montgomery took the B main.

“I figured Clint and Van Haaften would be stalking me there and waiting for a mistake,” said Henderson.  “I wasn’t sure how much of a lead we had, but the car was excellent.  The traffic was a little easier to handle than the 410 class.  This was a great racetrack, and I’m sure they’ll continue to be.”

The 305 feature was a race of attrition.  Only twelve of the night’s 25 entries finished an event that was shortened to 11 laps.  Devin Kline led every lap, despite seven restarts.  Mitchell Alexander flipped on lap one, collecting Christopher Scank and Kade Higday, who retired.  Rob Weuve and Don Dawson III were involved in a lap four incident.  Corey Kautz spun, collecting Weuve on lap eight.  Trevor Smith flipped on lap nine.  Brad Bowman spun and collected Cody Ambers on that restart.  None of the drivers were injured.

While Kline was out front, Stacey Alexander and Mike Mayberry exchanged second place five times with Alexander finally staking claim.  Mayberry followed at the checkers, ahead of Ben Woods and Kevin Hetrick.  McKenna Haase, Jeff Wilke, Tanner Edwards, Brad Comegys and Bowman rounded out the top ten.  Mayberry posted quick time of the night, while Smith, Kline and Bowman won heat races.

“I didn’t think that race was every going to get over,” said Kline after his fourth career 305 win aboard the L&J Automotive #5J.  “I just needed to calm down and hit my lines.  Slower was fastertonight, and I just needed to make sure I stuck it.”

The 305s put on some great racing in the heats but their A mains are looking like 305 street stocks instead of sprints. Lots of yellows & reds. Last week it took 22 min to run 15 laps. Wasn't this the second week in a row there was a crash in 305 time trials involving 2 cars? This week with rain coming they cut the A from 15 to 12 laps then checkered it after 11! I didn't really notice they only ran 11 but  do not doubt Bill W.

They started the first B main at a little after 9 and it was still closing in on 11pm when the 410 A finished. The radar showed rain at Chariton during the 305 A but luckily it disipated as it moved north or the 410 A may have not been run or cut short. And thats with no intermission and no interviews with the A main winners after the 305 & 360 A's

Kline wasn't the only one who thought that race was never going to get over. I bet John McCoy was sweating bullets every time a yellow or red came out in that 305 A!

Seems the 305s just struggle in the slick that makes for good racing in the 360s/410s. Makes sense with the experience level in that class compared to the others - not trying to discredit the class but it's the truth. I think it's an overall positive though - the racing can be good and it should pay dividends in the future.

Agree with everything you said. But maybe when they are racing the weather they should run the 360 A then the 410 and the 305 A last. I know any class could have a lot of cautions but the 305s seem to have the most troubles in the A. And running a make up 305 A the following week right after TT would probably be a real good race. Those guys (& girls) have been having some good racing in thier heats.

Possibly a time limit on the 305 feature race?

When you can have 70 or 89 410's in the pits thats a heck of alot better than the old TOC race. The racing wasnt bad but somebody lost their ass because nobody was in the stands.
