USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINTS HEAD TO QUEEN CREEK FOR “SPRING FLING”

PHOENIX, AZ – APRIL 16, 2015... This Saturday, April 18th, the cars and stars of the USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series will make their first of six appearances at Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway. Located within ET Motopark, the “4th Annual Spring Fling” will also feature X-Mods, ModLites, and Bombers. Since April 2013, twelve USAC SouthWest Sprint Car races have been held at the Queen Creek facility. Two-time and defending series champion R.J. Johnson leads all drivers with seven wins followed by “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (3), “The Magic Man” Mike Martin (1), and Josh Pelkey (1). Last season, Johnson added the “Spring Fling” to his resume and Martin scored a popular victory in 2013. Davis won the inaugural event sanctioned by the ASCS Canyon Region in 2012.

After winning last Saturday’s debut at Yuma’s Cocopah Speedway, R.J. Johnson of Phoenix has taken over the points lead. Piloting Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson holds a nine point advantage with two feature wins, three heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 27 feature laps led. On Saturday, Johnson will be looking to extend his lead by earning his 25th USAC SouthWest victory.

Tempe’s Stevie Sussex is second in the SouthWest point standings. Racing Mike Burkhart’s #21AZ Stratis Construction / KSE Custom Drywall RSS, Sussex scored sixteenth in Yuma after a flip ended his night. To date, the 2-time Hank Arnold Memorial champion has one feature win, two hard charger awards, five top-10 finishes, and 22 feature laps led on the year. At Arizona Speedway, Stevie will have his sights on making the “Spring Fling” his third career USAC SouthWest win.

“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye is third in the chase for the championship. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis ran eighth at Cocopah Speedway. Heading to Queen Creek, the five-time Arizona Sprint Car Champion has two high point driver awards, three heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 4 feature laps led in 2015. “Chargin” Charles will be looking to claim his eleventh career SouthWest victory this Saturday.

South Central’s Matt Rossi sits fourth in the point standings. Racing the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / IWR Spike, Rossi charged from eighth to claim second at Yuma. Entering Saturday’s race, the defending Western World Champion has one hard charger award and two top-10 finishes in the campaign. At Queen Creek, Matt will have his sights on earning his third career series feature win.

Josh Pelkey of Peoria is fifth in the USAC SouthWest point chase. Piloting Robbie and Gaye Allen’s #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts Maxim, Pelkey raced to fifth at Yuma after starting twelfth. To date, the former ASCA Champion has two top-10 finishes and will be looking for his sixth career SouthWest victory.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Shon Deskins, Mike Colegrove, “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James, Andy Reinbold, Brian Hosford, Josh Shipley, “The Kid” Tye Mihocko, Dennis Gile, Dalten Gabbard, Michael Curtis, and more.

Arizona Speedway is located at 47346 N. Ironwood Road in Queen Creek, just five miles south of Mesa. To get to the track, exit Ironwood Drive on US 60, then head four miles south. Adult Tickets are $15, Senior Tickets are $12, Kids Tickets (11-7) are $5, and Children 6 and under are FREE.
