I am deeply saddened by the passing of Earl Baltes. Because of his vision, and the passion he had to see it through, I was lucky enough to have the greatest dirt track practically in my back yard. Sprint car racing is and always has been a close knit family and It feels like we lost one of our Fathers today. When I first started going to the Big E back in the late 60's Earl ran the track with an iron fist much like he did until he mellowed in his later years. He treated the drivers the same whether you were Steve Kinser or a first time rookie. He always made time to talk to the fans and with his lovely wife they became the Golden couple of sprint car racing. I was lucky enough to talk to Earl several times over the years and I will never forget his humorous caring charm which replaced the stern man over the years. I think Mrs. Baltes finally rubbed off on him but it took a few years.lol.. I am also thankful for the entire Baltes family who poured their heart and soul into Eldora to make it what it was and is today. Thanks Earl for having the wisdom to turn your playground over to Tony Stewart who will always take care of your track. God's speed my friend............
