I was following on RM/DV last night and noticed that Pittman brought out a red flag after his flip. He didnt make the horn to refire to start the race tail end. The race restarted and 3 laps later another wreck happened. Pittman was able to get back into the race then. In the past if you dont make the 2min horn after a yellow and they restart the race and 1 lap is completed you are done. Why this change now? He picked up 4 spots that could in the end be valuable. Someone please clarify this for me.

Has been like that the last 5 or 10 years. Most tracks that run Sprints are that way. If you can fix the car, but don't make it back for the green (aka two minutes in the hotpit WoO, two laps other series or tracks) you wait till the next yellow to return to the track to race. As long as you don't go to your pit. If you go to your pit you are done.

I believe the rule is once the race is restarted and 1 lap is completed your are done.

I am pretty sure you are correct.  If another yellow happens before 1 lap is completed you can go back in.  I think that is exactly what happened to Pittman,  they did not run several laps before yellow came out again.

Rule 5.9.R.

"...If a car remains in the work area it can re-enter during any ensuing race stoppage, lining up behind any cars that are on the same lap as said car that is re-entering."

Some tracks or series will let you re-enter the race if you DO NOT GO (1) lap down. When Pittman re-entered the race he was (3) laps down. I watched the race monitor and he was (3) laps down when the next red came out. Apparently their rules allow this...z

As long as the car remains in the work area, it can come back out at any time, no matter how many laps down.  It's been that way for years.

Thank you Johnny, that is what I said.

Now most tracks that run a stock car or late model class will let the car return back to racing under green if they didn't make it back before the next green flag if there is room to make it back on safely. But some tracks run the same rule as the Outlaws.

Dude, sometimes just checking the rule book is easier and requires less hassle.
