Those events were a blast and full of non-stop drama and excitement. You never knew who was going to win, or from what starting spot they'd come from. High-banks, high speed, no mufflers...
For a sprint car-only format and to have 117 sprints one year and 131 the other (between the 2 sprint divisions), it was quite an awesome 3 nights of racing...and all at a fan-friendly $40 3-day grandstand pass.
Maybe some year we'll revive the event. It was quite the undertaking, with about 200 hundred hours of pre-event work...and then you have the weather to contend with.
Each year we had weather affect the event on one end or the other - yet we managed to get in every single scheduled race, as advertised.
The final year, all the local TV stations scared off the local crowd with their '70% chance of severe t-storms'...yet they didn't hit the track until they were scheduled to, 1 hour after the final checkers. But that's part of an outdoor event.
If you'd like to see a picture slideshow (nearly 100 shots) from the LoneStar Sprint Nationals, it's loaded on the homepage of the event website, which is still up at:
...brings back a lot of fun memories!
And here's a quick low-res video clip I shot from the announcers booth... http://youtu.be/GforiCJ9ZLY
...and another clip from Don Cook: http://youtu.be/GXdWxW5XKeA
Note that the ASCS Gulf Region will be at LoneStar in 2015 on Sat. June 27, while the ASCS Red River region will be racing on Saturday Oct. 10. Of course the season is kicking off with the LoneStar Sprint Smackdown on Sat. Feb. 21 featuring the RaceSaver sprint cars.
