I hope in a few years when I retire people don't speculate whether I'll continue to rate Ag trains on a part time basis.  I'm imagining what it would be like if every time a rate job opened up there would be posts on rail boards like "what's Stan going to do next year, do you think he'll rate a few bills on a part time basis?"

Celebrity must be a pain in the ass when a guy can't even ease out of what they've been doing for fourty years without folks wanting them to keep working.  It's times like these that I'm glad my name isn't Steve or Sammy.  wink

But seriously, can't we just let these guys go out on their own terms and enjoy a few years not spent on the road?  This wasn't an issue when I was a kid coming up back in the 50's.  Sprint Car drivers, if they were fortunate enough to still be around at 60, had long since retired by the time they reached that age.  I think we need to give these guys some slack and let them enjoy some well deserved time away from racing.  All the best in whatever they decide to do.

What a douchebag reply. The guy just asked a question. Get off your high horse. And if you are as big a tool as this response shows you are, I doubt anyone will be pining for your return. Have a great day.

I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm. Speaking of a douchbag post, your's ranks up there pretty high. Good job on that.  At least put your name on it if you want to call names.

You're right, I was making what I thought was a humorous comparison from the standpoint of someone 63 years old who can't wait to retire.  Just went under three years and very much looking forward to not having to drag it out every morning after having done so since the late 60's.  Some fans can't seem to accept the fact that Sammy and Steve are moving into another well deserved chapter in their lives.  Maybe someday when he's in his 60's and nearing retirement the guy who got all bent out of shape and called me a douchebag will so "oh, so that's what that guy was talking about on HH".  I've got better things to do than rile folks up on a message board for sport.  I guess the angry response is a reminder that not everyone is going to get my sense of humor.

It is getting kind of funny though seeing all these posts where people can't seem to accept the fact that we all get older and eventually can't do the things we used to do.  I guess there are a lot of people who have grown up with Steve and Sammy being synonomous with Sprint Car racing and have never known anything else.  They'll get it eventually, things change and nothing lasts forever.  wink

LOL, I wish I was a douchebag.  Guys my age don't get around that stuff very often.  That would be the biggest thrill I've had in quite a while.  wink

It's probably going to have a lot to do with how much backing he has.  He stated that he didn't want to burn up his retirement savings as a car owner.  A couple of high profile Late Model drivers, Brian Birkhofer and Brady Smith, just called it quits because they no longer could afford to own their own teams.  That is the reality of things nowadays.  People are quick to jump in and pencil these guys into every open ride, weekly show and new series that pops up this winter.  It wouldn't make sense at this point in life for him to go broke trying to race.  He has always had the best stuff available and that costs a lot of money.  It wouldn't be any fun to show up with equipment that was not capable of winning.

Miss Cleo would have her hands full with all these open rides, the new series and high profile retirements.  She would have to make sure that crystal ball is in tip top shape if she wanted to answer these Sprint Car questions.  wink

They interviewed him on the front stretch last night at Fremont and one of his comments was that he still has not decided if he is going to race at all next season or not.

We attended the sit down they had with him at Knoxville Nationals, and he said he would make up his mind in November what he is going to do next year. When we visited with Dana that same day, she made the comment several times about him racing next year?? Only time will tell what he decides? I hate the thoughts of not seeing him race anymore, but also would hate to see him get hurt at this stage in his life also!! In the end we just have to live with whatever he desides. I can't see how he's not just burned out after all these years!!  As a fan, it's been one hell of a ride! LONG LIVE THE KING!!!!!

I talked to Tom Deery at the Kings Royal and he said Steve was planning on running about 40 races in the midwest next year for Tony Stewart. That may change, of course, but Steve could have a nice schedule running the Outlaws and Renegades next year and stay pretty close to home. If he took the wing off he'd really have a lot of choices but I doubt that will ever happen at this point in his career. I don't believe he'll quit completely as I think he still enjoys it but on a much more limited basis whereas Sammy was just ready to hang it up period. Plus, Steve himself has said he doesn't know anything else and just hanging out can get stale after a while. Wish him all the best whatever he does.

You read my mind. It  would be cool , but I seriously doubt it. I remember reading an article a while back where Karl Kinser was saying how much safer winged cars are....wing absorbs lots of the energy on a flip

I'd like to see Steve hire a personal trainer for a few months & get himself in great physical shape again.   As we all age its a struggle to fight gravity and keep the extra pounds from dragging us down.  I'm guessing he could get in shape & pick and choose where he wanted to race (if any) and still sell more T-shirts than anyone.....

It's hard to believe that Sammy is gone for good and Steve isn't far behind so don't look for Steve to get in shape as he is hungry but not for sprint car victories. He's won everything there is to win multiple times and I think he'll race to have some fun with the pressure off and be happy if he's just competitive, maybe picking up a couple non-Outlaw wins along the way. He was racing against the best every night and might run up front some in non-Outlaw shows. If standing naked in front of a mirror doesn't jump-start him to get in shape and stop considering gravy a beverage then I doubt a reduced racing schedule will, either.
