Trophy Cup Format Slightly Modified

by Ron Rodda

A minor adjustment to the Friday night format has been instituted for the 21st Annual Trophy Cup, set to push off in just under 2 weeks. With the change, Thursday and Friday preliminary nights will have a little different heat transfer scheme each night.

What has not changed is the bulk of the format, which starts with Thursday pill draw when the first half of the field becomes group A with the latter half is group B. Each group will have its own fast qualifier, meaning two drivers will collect the maximum 150 points, and each group will run its own set of five heat races, elevating the top 2 from each heat into the night’s A main, next 2 to the B, etc.

Once the ten heats are finished, the E through A mains will mix the two groups. Lineups for each main will be established by points earned within a driver’s group. The Thursday A main inverts 12 by points and is set for 30 laps.

Friday’s qualifying session will have group B qualifying first and within each group the order will be reversed from Thursday. There is no pill draw Friday. Otherwise, the format repeats the opening night plan with one exception. Friday heat transfers will now be the top two point cars from that heat, no matter what position a driver is in at the ten-lap completion. It is the Friday points only that will be used to determine the top two point cars from each heat. Friday mains are aligned the same as Thursday’s.

Along with the new three day format is the driver counting their higher point night from Thursday and Friday to be used for Saturday race assignments. Each opening night is a separate point total and the better point night will automatically be applied to Saturday’s lineups.

Saturday will start with a trio of D mains, followed by heats for the top 48 in points, 8 cars per heat and fully inverted. Following those heats, the top 20 in points, no matter what heat race finishing position was earned, go directly to the completely inverted 50 lap main. C mains will include some D main transfers and four more A main cars will come out of the B main. Since the A main is completely inverted by points, the B main transfers are automatically placed in the front two rows.

The A main on Saturday is a race within a race. The battle at the front for the race win is matched by the battle among the deep in the pack starters who are moving forward in hopes of earning the most points. After 50 laps, the driver whose point total from Thursday or Friday plus Saturday’s additional points is the highest is the Trophy Cup champion and wins a guaranteed $20,000. All 16 mains raced over the three days will pay every starting driver.

For 20 years the Trophy Cup has been a remarkable event, and with the new three-day format this year, the excitement may well be at an all time high. Drivers who have tough luck on opening night get another chance on Friday, something that was never part of the event in prior years. It all takes place at Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway on October 16-18.

Am I reading this correctly? If your Thursday night is a max point night do you really need to run Friday?. Does this say your best points night from both nights or a combined of the two.

It is the better of the two nights in points that is used for Saturday.

Rules state that on Friday all drivers must take every green flag if the car is able to compete (official's decision)  to be eligible for the point fund.

Remember, Friday's purse is $25,660.  That is a lot of reason to race also.

The Trophy Cup pays every main event..all the way to the E mains.

Nice article by Jeremy Elliot on Williams Grove National Open winner David Gravel coming out to race Trophy Cup

http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/10/david_gravel_to_forgo_world_of.html

----------

David Gravel is still going after big paychecks in 2014, and that doesn't include the closing stages of the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.

The Connecticut driver just polished off a win in the prestigious Williams Grove National Open worth $50,000. Next up: The Trophy Cup.

Gravel will forgo the World of Outlaws Oct. 18 event at Ohio's Fremont Speedway. Instead, he will compete in the 21st annual Trophy Cup at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif, which could net a driver close to $20,000.

"I'm not a platinum driver, so I'm not eligible for points or a point fund because I missed races at the beginning of the year," Gravel said.

"That is one Dennis Roth's favorite races. He wants to win it, plus it's for charity and he puts a lot into it."

Roth has plenty of opportunities.

There will be three cars flying Dennis Roth colors in the California event. Along with Gravel, Kyle Hirst and John Carney will be vying for t he top prize.

As for the No. 83 car you have grown accustomed to seeing running on the WoO trail, it will be in the pit area at Fremont. The driver has yet to be determined.

"To be honest, I don't know much information about that," Gravel said. "Originally, we wanted to have Dave Blaney, but that isn't going to work out. Jac [Haudenschild] is a possibility, but I don't know who it will be.

"We will have a driver at Fremont. The car won't miss races, so we will be eligible for owner points and a prize fund."

Gravel isn't disappointed about missing the Fremont experience. As he indicated, "It's not one of my favorite tracks."

Besides, Gravel likes racing in California. He won at Merced Speedway earlier this year and has always been quick at Thunderbowl Raceway.

"I'm not sure what I like about it," Gravel said. "It's a unique place and seems to suit me well. I like going there.

"I'm not surprised we're doing it. Personally, I would rather be at Trophy Cup. I'm usually fast in California, and I'm excited to race for $20,000."
