NIC FAAS STORMS TO VICTORY AT CHOWCHILLA

CHOWCHILLA, CA – AUGUST 11, 2014... Taking the lead from Austin Liggett on lap six, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach scored his first USAC West Coast victory at Chowchilla Raceway. Saturday’s $1,500 triumph was also his second USAC Western Classic main event win of the campaign. “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., Brody Roa, Matt Mitchell, and Richard Vander Weerd rounded out the top-five drivers.

Piloting Keith Ford’s #73X Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Nic Faas became the 34th driver to score a USAC West Coast feature win. Using the non-qualifying / passing points format, Faas won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1 and placed fifth overall in points. After staring on the outside of the front row, Faas left Chowchilla ranked ninth in West Coast points and third in the Western Classic point chase.

Tipton’s “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. pressured Faas in the closing laps and took second at the checkered flags. Racing Junior Bowman’s #2 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / DeBoer & Sons Trucking Spike, Faria ran third in his heat race and took fourth in passing points. Entering the schedule break, last season’s West Coast Champion is sixth in points and ninth in the Western Classic standings.

Brody Roa of Huntington Beach had another strong effort with a third place finish at Chowchilla. Driving the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa took third in his heat race and entered the feature ranked second in passing points. In limited appearances, the former Wagsdash Champion is fourteenth in West Coast points and fifteenth in the Western Classic series.

After winning the night before at Watsonville, Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell placed fourth at Chowchilla. Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / ART Enterprises Maxim, Mitchell ran second to Austin Liggett in his heat race and was third in passing points. Returning to USAC/CRA competition, Matt is the West Coast Point Leader and second in the Western Classic point standings.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia was the night’s high point driver and took fifth in the Chowchilla debut. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard ran second to Nic Faas in his heat race. The 2011 West Coast Champion his currently third in points and fourth in the Western Classic standings.

Terra Bella’s Trent Carter earned the night’s Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a ninth place run from fourteenth. Driving a new family owned #13 Porterville Lock & Safe / Porterville Collision Center Maxim, Carter was seventh in his heat race, second in the dash, and fourteenth in passing points. Trent left Chowchilla ranked seventeenth in the West Coast standings and twenty-seventh in Western Classic points.

Austin Liggett of Tracy won the 10-lap Deist Safety Heat Race #2. Piloting the family owned #83 Excel Environmental / Home Connections Inc. Spike, Liggett was sixth in passing points and led the first five laps of the main event. The 2012 West Coast Rookie of the Year had an early exit and scored fifteenth. To date, Austin is ranked eighth in both the West Coast and Western Classic standings.

Clovis’ Kolby Araki returned to action and won the 4-lap Saldana Racing Products / Pyrotect Racing Cells Dash. Racing his new #30K PKS Kart Supplies / Graphix Plus Spike, Araki ran eighth in his heat race, was fifteenth in passing points, and ran thirteenth in the main event. Kolby is tied for fifty-fourth in West Coast points and thirty-third in the Western Classic series.

On Saturday, September 27th, the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will return to action at Kevin Montgomery's Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona. The $2,500-to-win "Brawl For It All" is the second round of the "Grudge Series" with the USAC SouthWest Sprints and will also feature Mini Sprints, Dwarf Cars, and AMA ModLites. On Saturday, September 20th, the USAC Western Classic Sprints will make their debut at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park in Marysville, California.
