Here's the sheet that explains the 54th running of the Johnny Key Classic presented by Al's Roofing Supply. Format, how the drivers lock in, etc.

The qualifying and race format will be as follows.

Qualifying

Starting Saturday, July 5, 2014, Drivers from the Taco Bravo Ocean 360 Sprints Series and California Civil War Series will pre-qualify for a starting spot in the 54th running of The Johnny Key Classic at Ocean Speedway. This will be accomplished by Winning of the following races, July 5 – Civil War Race; July 25 – Taco Bravo Race; August 9 – Civil War Race and August 15 – Taco Bravo Race. If there is a repeat winner, the spot will remain open and available the night of the race. After August 15, 2014, if the point’s leader of the Taco Bravo and Civil War Series has not won, they will secure a starting spot in the Key race and be will be included in the pre-qualified Key race line up.

Race night format

Drivers not “locked” into the Key race will hot lap and group qualifying. Then will run Last Chance Qualifier(s) for the next 16 starting spots in the Key race. The Last Chance Qualifier format will be the multiple LCQ format, [# of Last Chance Qualifiers will be determined by number of entrants the night of the Key race], with no more than 12 cars per Last Chance Qualifier. Last Chance Qualifier line-up will be determined by qualifying times, and started straight up. The Last Chance Qualifiers will be 12 laps. We will take a total of 16 (or available spots) cars from the Last Chance Qualifiers to complete the 22 car starting field. The drivers that qualified thru the Last Chance Qualifiers will start behind the pre-qualified drivers for the Key as they finish their LCQ. Note only LCQ (non-transfers) and Main points will be awarded for this event

Drivers that have pre-qualified will be allowed an opportunity to hot lap during the night before the Key race. There will be a six (6) lap dash consisting of the six (6) Drivers that have pre qualified. The starting order of the dashes will be determined by pill draw. The finishing order of the dash will determine their starting spots for the Key. The Last Chance Qualifier cars will follow in the line-up as stated previously.

Johnny Key Race Laps

The Key race will consist of a total of fifty (50) laps. There will be two (2) twenty-five (25) lap segments. At the conclusion of the first segment the cars will be stopped on the front straight in front of the grandstands. There will be a 10 minute intermission in which cars can refuel, change tires, and make whatever adjustments the crews can do on the front straight before teams are signaled to leave the track and cars are pushed off. Cars will be lined up to resume the race in the order in which they finished the first segment.

Purse

Total Purse will be $22,450 with $7,500 to win, $3,500 for second, $2,000 for third, with a guaranteed $400 to start the A-Main. Dash purse will be $600. The Fast Time and Hard Charger awards will be $200 each

Taco Bravo Pre Party

Ocean Speedway and Taco Bravo will be hosting a Johnny Key Pre-Party at the Taco Bravo location 1950 South Bascom Avenue, Campbell, CA from 5pm to 8:30pm on Friday August 22. All pre-qualified cars and other teams are welcome to come and display their race cars at the event. Help us sell 3000 Taco’s

To participating teams

Drivers’ meeting is at 3:45pm

Please work with us to make this a great event. We know everyone has their own opinion of how things should be done. Unfortunately we can never make everyone happy. So please keep that in mind. Minor adjustment may be made to this as deemed necessary by the track.
