I'm getting tickets today, and am looking for advice.  We've never gone to the Nationals before, so I'm hoping to draw on the experience of the veterans.  So where should we sit?  Is higher simply better?  Are the poles an issue and do they obstruct the view at all?  How far down thes the canopy cover?  Do we want to be under it?  Does the sunset come in to play at all sitting one end vs the other?  And anything else it would be good for a rookie to know.

Thanks everyone.

Honestly there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Myself however prefer not to be behind the poles. They don't obstruct that bad but to me I notice them. The canopy starts where the poles are which I believe is row 33. For weekly shows I like to be in 25 or higher but the rigs aren't there during nationals so you can sit lower and be ok. The sun is really only a factor very early on in the night but they start later to let it settle and by qualifying it's pretty much not a factor. The pass out gate is clear in turn 1 if you need to leave but I think they open a 2nd one for nationals in the middle. If you smoke the smoking section is in the middle also. Restrooms and food is spread out if you can though get an isle seat if you get up a lot some sections are packed and it sucks when your in the middle crawling over people. Hope this helps, have fun it's the best week of the year, I can't wait!!

LR is correct, there isn't a bad seat in the house and you'll have a great time regardless of where you sit.   I sat in the main stands for the 360 Nationals and on the back straight for the 410 Nationals and thoroughly enjoyed both experiences.     I can't wait for August either!

Thanks everyone.  What about sitting in the back stretch stands?  Is there an advantage besides a few more rows on the front stretch?

Backstretch Pros:

It seems that the stands are a little closer to the track, and at a steeper angle than the frontstretch stands

It doesn't seem as crowded - can stretch out a little more

If you're used to only spectating from the frontstretch, it's a cool new perspective.

Backstretch Cons:

You're farther from the flag stand and start/finish line.

You can't see driver intros, driver interviews, post-race stuff, etc that happens in victory lane.

Chilly has it right on the backstretch.

One other pro - sitting low in the stands as the cars come out of 2 gives you a very unique perspective.  Might scare the heck out of you!

This will be our 4th year with the Back Stretchers, Love it back there, About Row 15 and Sec R I think, You can see everything good and being so close to the track is very cool especially when they blast off of turn 2 down the back stretch.

I would suggest a minimum of 10 rows high on either the front or back though. We were 28 rows up on the front and 15 on the Back but as Chilly said the back has a slightly steeper pitch and closer to the track.

Definitely a different perspective on the backstretch, I liked it, but missed the hoopla you see on the frontstretch, but that's just me. If you're going for multiple nights, you could do a night on the backstretch to see if you like it.

Eric...Have been to the K since 1989 and have sat both on the back and the front. The higher you go on the frontstrech, the more crowded it is. If it's hot (like most years) and you are in the middle of a row, it can be brutally hot and hard to get to restroom or grab some grub or a brew. For the past ten years we have sat in rows 1-5 behind the flagstand. Alot of room and easy access to facilities. Not to mention the view if you are into people watching! The racing view is incredible since there are no trailors in the infield. No worries about the sun, since it sets outside turns 3 and 4. P.S. We don't even buy our tickets until the day of the show, even for Saturday night. (Did I mention sitting down low gets you to the beer line quicker!!!) Enjoy the show. It is the best. Unless Schatz wins again, like he probably will!)

I have been going yearly since 2002.  I sat on the front stretch two times and the back stretch the rest.  I prefer the back stretch.  I second the motion that you are closer to the track and have a better view over the person in front of you--and there may not even be anyone in front of you until Saturday night.  The bathrooms line moves plenty fast--Saturday night you may wait 5 minutes to get in during breaks.  I've never stood in line for more than 3 or 4 minutes for food or beer either.  I like section X or Y, somewhere between rows 12 and 15--mud line is usually around row 9 or 10--depending on the wind.    And, you have a better perspective of the start/finish line than the front stretchers down towards turn 4--if you have good eyesight that is.

Honestly though--I have no complaints about anywhere that i have sat.

Hope this helps!

I agree with what people are saying.  I like the back stretch.  The angle and closeness to the track make a better view.  It also seems les crowded and only 10 to 12 rows up give great view with the trailers out of the infield.

This is good advice for you Eric.   Don't buy advance tickets, you will have no problem buying tickets at the gate.  If you buy advance and don't like 'em then you're probably stuck with them.    Like DSC says, do a night on the back straight and see how you like it.    I like the back straight and the other three guys I go with liked it too.

Like most everyone says, wait and try them both.  You shouldn't have a problem with tickets and there are scalpers at the front of the track.  I have sold extra to them but just don't like to buy them there.  Have heard some stories.  I have been on the top row by the elevator for 18 years.  Some of our group are weekly people, some we only see at the Nationals each year so we spend all 4 days there.  If not for that, I would sit both in the front and back.  I back is a neat experience and you get a good idea of the speed.  I was headed to the bathroom once and sort of stepped over to the fence as DeWease came by and "wow".  It was something.  No matter what, you will enjoy it.  Welcome to Knoxville.

My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

first year I went, we sat cramped up high in expensive seats on the front row, between the flagstand and turn 1.

second time, I had bought backstretch up high, basically kind of right in the middle. after about 5 minutes of watching hot laps, we moved down low. It was awesome. I pretty much agree with the majority in this thread. being right up on the track is awesome, you feel the speed, have an amazing angle of the cars.

Buy about 4 extra sits there are a lot of big ones in Iowa.

knoxville needs to take about 4 seats out a row so you can sit comfortable.

Get a new big screen that thing worthless,, GI to any sporting event that has a big screen and you can see it.  Not at Knoxville that is simplly a piece of shit.  No one in their right mind can defend that piece of crap.

I was there  last weekend sitting by some young people and they thought it was a joke to look at a replay on that thing.

Go to I hawks, cyclones, or twins game you can see the damn Big sceen.  First thing to remodel is that big sceen.
