Chris Graf Caps Off Championship Season With Richert Memorial Win
New Richmond, WI
By: Greg Parent, UMSS Media Director (9-7-13)

What a way to cap off your first-ever UMSS Championship season with a win on the final night at the 13th Annual Jerry Richert, Sr. Memorial race. Chris Graf of Glencoe did just that, as he raced to a convincing win at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday September 7 to put the exclamation mark on a spectacular 2013 UMSS season! It was Graf's first win of the year and his 11th career UMSS victory. Securing the championship earlier in the week at Granite City, Graf and his top-notch crew were really focused on getting a win in the season finale, especially at a premier event like the Richert Memorial. In his Victory Lane interview, Graf thanked his crew, family, sponsors and everyone involved for their dedication and hard work in giving him the opportunity to earn a championship and win the feature to close out the UMSS season.

A very stout field of 21 UMSS sprints signed into the pits on a hot, sunny, breezy afternoon. Add in 29 IRA 410 sprints, and fans saw a field of 50 sprint cars at this annual later summer gathering of the sprint car clan to honor a true champion, Jerry Richert, Sr. The UMSS ran their usual double round of qualifying races with Jerry Richert Jr, Brooke Tatnell and Graf winning the Ultimate sprint heats. Lee Grosz and Davey Heskin topped the Challenge races. Heskin was high point driver and drew the zero pill for a straight-up feature race start. Outside of Heskin on the front row was recently crowned 2013 UMSS Champion Chris Graf.

With three cars unable to take the green flag in the 20 lap feature, 18 winged UMSS warriors came to life with Graf blasting into the early lead. Richert's car had an immediate problem on the start and dropped out of the race right away. Two laps in Tony Norem blew a motor and stalled in turn two to bring out the first caution. Jared Goerges brought out another quick caution on the restart with a spin in turn two. Graf once again was strong when the race went green, as Lee Grosz got by Heskin for second on lap 3. Brooke Tatnell was on the move forward from his 12th starting spot though. Tatnell's car had suffered a rear end failure while leading his Challenge race, so he was pushed back into the middle of the feature starting grid.

Graf maintained a comfortable lead up front running high on the cushion around the 3/8 mile banked oval. The leaders were into lapped traffic before the halfway mark, as laps clicked off under green. Tatnell kept advancing, moving to third a mid race. Tatnell got by Grosz on lap 14 and set his sights on Graf. Tatnell began closing the gap, but with 16 laps in the books the right rear tire on his Nelson #14 sprint blew to bring out the third and final yellow of the race. Graf's big lead was gone, but his closest pursuer was on the hook heading to the work area.

Four green flag laps later, it was mission accomplished for Graf. Finishing behind the champion was Lee Grosz, Davey Heskin, Cody Hahn and Tatnell. Tatnell restarted behind the lead lap cars and picked off four of them in the final four laps. Completing the top ten finishers were Rick Kobs, IRA driver Wayne Modjeski in his 360 sprinter, Jared Goerges, Brandon Allen and Tony Kaus. Graf earned $1,200 for his victory. All pay positions were increased thanks to the Richert family and many great sponsors! Tatnell won the GRP Motorsports Hard Charger Award and also "lucked out" with his fifth place finishing position earning him a new top wing from Mastell Brothers Racing.

Plenty of drama played out in the battle for second through sixth in the final UMSS point standings. Jason Tostenson came into the final night with a 23 point margin over Cody Hahn and Tony Norem. Following Tostenson's heat race, the team discovered a motor problem that forced them to scratch for the remainder of the evening. That put the focus on what Hahn and Norem would do. The story continued to unfold as Norem saw heavy smoke pour out of his B1st car while leading his Challenge race. Norem was able to start the feature but soon became the first caution just two laps into the race with an engine failure. Now it was up to Hahn to finish first or second, as Tostenson would be throwing out his score from this night and bringing in a tenth place finish. In the GRP Motorsports Chase for the UMSS Championship, drivers throw out their two lowest scores for the season to determine their final point tally. At the checkers, Hahn drove to a solid fourth place finish and ended up just five points behind Tostenson for the runner-up spot in the point standings. Lee Grosz, on the strength of his second place finish and problems for Richert and Norem, moved up to fourth in the final points. Norem ended up fifth with Richert in sixth, as those three positions changed hands on the final night of the season. Tostenson had dodged a bit of a bullet, but consistent top ten finishes in all but two races helped him in his bid to finish second in the points. 2010 Champion Hahn, who had initially only planned on running about half of the schedule, finished third, picked up his third career UMSS win, ran every race, and turned in a very solid performance.

A couple of drivers returned to action with the UMSS at CLS after not racing since the June 8 show at Ogilvie Raceway. The UMSS welcomed back 2011 Rookie of the Year Chad Patterson and Kevin Nickel. Both drivers sustained heavy damage to their cars in separate crashes at the Big O. With a total of seven shows cancelled for various weather reasons and the final two shows not able to be run when Elko Speedway decided not to put the dirt down on their track, drivers like Patterson and Nickel had an abbreviated season. The UMSS was able to complete 16 shows which equaled the amount in both of their first two seasons, so at least Mother Nature did not force an undesirable record to occur.

The UMSS wishes to thank ALL of the drivers, car owners, crews, families, fans, sponsors and everyone who helped to make the 2013 season a success for both the winged sprints and the Traditional non-winged sprints. Look for details to be announced in the upcoming weeks regarding the Fall Rules Meeting and the UMSS Banquet on our website at

www.umsprints.com or by following us on our Facebook page. The UMSS looks forward to another great season in 2014 with hopes that the weather will be more cooperative than it was in 2013.

Richert Races To First 2013 Win At Granite City On Labor Day
(Graf locks up championship title)

Sauk Rapids, MN
By: Greg Parent, UMSS Media Director (9-2-13)

?

The third and final night of the long three race UMSS Labor Day Weekend was contested at the Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids on Labor Day, as the series made their second ever appearance at the 1/3 mile dirt oval located on Golden Spike Road. It was a golden night for 2011-2012 UMSS Champion Jerry Richert, Jr. of Forest Lake, as he picked up his first win of the season and thirteenth career UMSS victory. With his family's big memorial race slated for the following weekend, Richert tuned up for that event with his strongest performance of the season in leading all 25 laps of the feature race at Granite City. The veteran driver did a wing dance in Victory Lane following his win.

The long weekend took its toll on cars and drivers, but a very strong field of 15 UMSS sprints were on hand at Granite City. The UMSS ran their typical double round of qualifiers. Ultimate sprint heats went to Jason Tostenson, Lee Grosz and Lou Kennedy, Jr. Current UMSS point leader Chris Graf won the first Challenge race while Cody Hahn, fresh off a Mighty Axe win at Brainerd, won the second Challenge race. Kennedy was high in points and drew the #4 pill for the feature race invert. This put Richert and Lou's son Thomas Kennedy on the front row.

Immediately racing to the lead at the drop of the green flag, Richert left little doubt in anyone's mind that the two-time UMSS champion was going to be the car to beat. The fast pace was only slowed twice under caution at the halfway mark. Richert was strong on each restart and maintained his lead running up on the cushion. Thomas Kennedy ran second until his dad Lou was able to slip by him on lap 13. Tony Norem got by Thomas Kennedy two laps later for third. Graf ran in fifth until lap 18 when Lee Grosz get by. As the laps peeled off, the checkers were soon waving for Richert followed by Lou Kennedy, Norem, Thomas Kennedy and Grosz in the top five. A solid sixth place finish for Chris Graf locked up the 2013 UMSS Championship title for the Glencoe driver, as none of his closest competitors will be able to overtake him in the point standings at the last race of the season. Congrats to Chris Graf and the entire 20G team for a superb effort in securing the UMSS championship. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Jason Tostenson, Cody Hahn, Rick Kobs and Jared Goerges. Also locking up the 2013 GRP Motorsports Rookie of the Year title was Reed Allex of St. Cloud. Congrats to Reed on being the 2013 Rookie of the Year!

The point battle for positions two through six in the UMSS standings remains very tight coming into the Richert Memorial. Tostenson holds a 23 point lead over Hahn and Norem. Richert is another 23 points back and only one marker ahead of Grosz. A myriad of possible scenarios could play out in the final race of the season, but Tostenson could lock up the runner-up spot in the standings by finishing sixth or better at Cedar Lake Speedway. Hahn and Norem should break their tie while Richert and Grosz could potentially finish as high as third in the final rundown.

The 13th Annual Jerry Richert, Sr. Memorial will be the final event of the 2013 UMSS season. Elko Speedway is NOT putting the dirt down this fall, so there will be no dirt racing at all for any divisions at Elko in October. Race fans will certainly want to be on hand at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday September 7 for the Richert Memorial, as the IRA Outlaw 410 sprint cars will highlight the program along with the season finale for the UMSS sprints. This annual September gathering for sprint car racing fans is always one of the premier nights on both the IRA and UMSS schedules each season. Scotty Thiel With Exciting Last Lap Pass For Second Mighty Axe Win

Brainerd, MN
By: Greg Parent, UMSS Media Director (9-1-13)

Two features in one day made for an interesting 2013 edition of the Mighty Axe Nationals at North Central Speedway. After a long rain delay on the opening night pushed the feature race back to early Sunday morning, later on in the day much improved weather allowed the second night to run off in much better fashion for the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS). An exciting last lap pass by Scotty Thiel of Sheboygan, Wisconsin over Lou Kennedy, Jr. of Winnipeg netted Thiel his second Mighty Axe trophy in the 25 lap feature. Thiel got his first "axe" last year on the second night, and one year later he earned his second unique trophy after following Kennedy for a little more than 24 laps before making the winning move in turns 1-2 on the final circuit for the $1,000 top prize. The motor in the winning car was provided by Mastell Brothers Racing, as Thiel blew his own powerplant up at the Kouba Memorial a few weeks ago.

Under sunny skies for the late afternoon start, the UMSS was able to utilize their usual double round of qualiying races on Sunday night. Ultimate Sprint Heat wins for the 24 cars on hand went to Jason Tostenson, Thomas Kennedy and Lou Kennedy, Jr. In Challenge race action, Wade Nygaard and Tony Norem raced to the top spots. Passing and finishing points were calculated following the two rounds, and Lee Grosz topped the points. Grosz pulled the #4 pill for the feature race invert. Three cars were unable to start the feature. Brooke Tatnell had a broken rocker arm in the engine of his sprinter, Leigh Thomas crashed in his heat race after taking the checkers, and Jennifer Eriksen withdrew her car with handling problems after her heat race. Twenty one cars were able to make the call for the UMSS feature race.

Unlike the night before, well early Sunday morning actually, this race only saw one yellow flag slow the pace with 15 laps in the books. Lou Kennedy, Jr. grabbed the early lead from his pole starting position with Thiel close behind. The fast way around was on the cushion, and the laps clicked off quickly until Jared Goerges and Neal Matuska tangled in turn two. Goerges changed a flat tire under the yellow while Matuska was out of the race. This erased Lou Kennedy's lead and put Thiel right on his bumper for the restart. Kennedy maintained the top spot for several more laps.

Thiel closed in a bit in lapped traffic. With four laps to go, Thiel made a bid for the lead in turn one but could not get by Kennedy. This allowed Kennedy to open up several car lengths on Thiel again. With two laps to go, Kennedy slipped a bit high in turn 3 in what he later described as the loon $#!% and quickly felt Thiel's presence. Thiel measured him up entering turn one on the final lap, made a charge to the low side, and slid up in front of Kennedy for the lead. Kennedy was not able to regain the top spot in the final corner, as Thiel raced to an exciting final lap victory. Kennedy was a close second ahead of his son Thomas Kennedy. Thomas had started eighth, was running in fifth at the lone caution, and advanced two more positions in the final ten laps for third behind his dad. Grosz and Tostenson completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Nygaard, Norem, Jerry Richert Jr, current UMSS point leader Chris Graf and opening night winner Cody Hahn. Only two cars dropped out of the race.

To complete their three-race Labor Day weekend, the UMSS sprints headed down the highway to the Granite City Speedway on Monday for their only appearance of the 2013 season and their second-ever race at the Sauk Rapids track.

Cody Hahn Captures A Second Mighty Axe Trophy

Brainerd, MN
By: Greg Parent, UMSS Media Director (8-31-13)

Battling a long rain delay, the opening night of the 12th Annual Mighty Axe Nationals actually concluded in a different month. The racing program featuring the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS) winged sprints in action at the 1/3 mile North Central Speedway oval began on Saturday night August 31, but following a two hour rain delay, the feature race did not take the green flag until 12:30 AM on Sunday morning September 1. Throughout the course of the marathon evening and at the final checkers early Sunday morning, 2010 UMSS Champion Cody Hahn of Oak Grove picked up his first UMSS win of the season and his second career Mighty Axe title. Hahn got this first Axe back in 2010 also on the opening night. For Hahn, it was also his third career UMSS win and came on his birthday! Hahn led the entire 20 lap distance on his way to the $1,000 birthday payday.

With sprint car hot laps and a few stock car heat races in the books, a line of storms blew through the area. Although North Central Speedway received some rainfall from the storms, the heaviest cells moved north and south of the track. Once the storms had passed, the long process of getting the track back into racing condition got underway. Finally it was time to go racing well over two hours later. UMSS officials decided, after consulting with the drivers, to scrap the Challenge races and run three 10-lap heats before the scheduled 25-lap feature.

Ultimate Sprint Heat wins went to Jordan Wilmes, Wade Nygaard and Tony Kaus. Passing and finishing points were still utilized, and Thomas Kennedy was the high point driver. Kennedy pulled the #8 pill for the feature race invert, putting Cody Hahn and Wade Nygaard on the front row. Of the 24 cars on hand, 23 were able to start the feature. Sye Anderson, who had lost a motor in hot laps, was the only car that did not make the call for the feature.

One could tell right away that things probably were not going to go smoothly in this feature race, as both Jordan Wilmes and Tony Kaus required a second push to refire their cars. The scheduled inside row 2 and row 3 starters were relegated to the rear of the field. Hahn grabbed the early lead, but the race was under caution when Davey Heskin stalled on the back stretch with one lap in the books. Two laps later, Wilmes spun in turn 2 for another caution. Hahn continued to show the way up front when Jerry Richert, Jr. and 2012 UMSS Rookie of the Year James Broty made contact in turn 2 causing Broty's car to flip over the concrete wall. Following the red flag, Hahn maintained his lead.

A spin by Leigh Thomas slowed the pace one lap later before a run of four green flag laps brought out another caution when Hahn and Kevin Bradwell made contact in turn 2. Bradwell rode the hook to the pits while Hahn kept his car going. Scotty Thiel, who was running second at the time, was collected in the incident and suffered a flat right rear tire and some other damage to his car. Thiel was done for the night. UMSS officials decided to cut the distance to 20 laps at this time. We almost made it to the end, but coming to the white flag, Tony Norem and Wilmes made contact in turn 2 with Norem tipping on his side and Wilmes needing wrecker assistance under the red to remove his car from the track. This set the stage for a two lap dash to the finish.

Cody Hahn held off current UMSS point leader Chris Graf, Lou Kennedy Jr, Lee Grosz and 18th starter Jerry Richert, Jr. for his second career UMSS victory and his second Mighty Axe title. Jason Tostenson, Dave Becker, Davey Heskin, Thomas Kennedy and Tony Kaus rounded out the top ten finishers. With the UMSS being the first feature race on the track, North Central Speedway then completed their stock car program with the final checkers waving on the modified feature at 4:00 AM in the morning. Then it was time for fireworks at four! Yep, they shot up a pretty nice fireworks display at that hour.

The UMSS sprints continued later on Sunday with the second night of the Mighty Axe Nationals, as the weather and the racing was much improved along with the hour of the evening.

Thanks for the updates. Is Elko done with dirt or just not doing it this fall?

I can't give you a 100% for-sure answer on that, but one thing is for sure is that the dirt will NOT be going down this fall.  Never know for sure what kind of offer might be made going forward to see if the dirt goes back down, but I would say at this point it would take a pretty substantial offer to pursuade Tom Ryan to put it down.  We shall see going forward.  I do know that there are some parties interested in having the dirt down there again.
