1986 Jackson Racing Association
8th Jackson Nationals
Unlimited 410 Sprints
Jackson Speedway, Jackson, Minnesota
Friday, August 22nd

Earlier in the day at the Big Cone parking lot, a meet and greet was held with several competitors and the cars of veteran racer Rick Ferkel and rising teenage racing star from California, Jeff Gordon. It was cool to get yet another autograph from the larger than life icon of our sport along with this kid being the same age as me. After a quick ride out to Woodke's Shop-by the time we got back to the track, it was windy and had gotten really cold.

The Jackson Nationals looks and feels very different as the VFW ended 32 years of running the track until Hugh Craven and the JRA was created back in May. Maybe the split night with each class? Also, Rocky Hodges (1983 Champion) is the only driver who has a previous Nationals title competing. Marv DeWall, Jack McCorkell and Don Reiners are either race-retired, or behind a desk selling tractors. Bobby Davis Jr. and car owner, Paul Morgan head west out on the WoO tour while defending Champion, Doug Wolfgang is running the Bob Weikert No. 29 in Pennsylvania.

The finale and those who can, fill in the blanks, missing info and corections as needed.

1986 Jackson Racing Association
8th Jackson Nationals
Jackson Speedway, Jackson, Minnesota
Saturday, August 23rd

360 A Trophy Dash
1. Kevin McIntyre [1]; 2. Doug Navara [2]; 3. Todd Wessels [3]; 4. John Gerloff [6]; 5. Bill Rook [5]; 6. Mike Brudigan [4].

Kevin’s wife, Peggy wins the Valvoline Go Kart from the Lucky Number Program. Some kid from Lakefield won the Go Kart from Road Runner.

410 C Feature (15 Laps)
1. Steve Carithers [4]; 2. Keith Frantsen [9]; 3. Jimmy Grafton [11]; 4. Tim Baker [5]; 5. Rick Daugherty [10]; 6. Terry Otero [13]; 7. Joe Kouba [6]; 8. Kevin Spease [7]. Pole sitter, Ekern is done before anything really happened after he ends upside down through turns 3-4 during a hot lap session. Carithers into the immediate lead and the distance. By the end of the opening lap, Frantsen is second place and held till checkers. Russel and Goettsche tangle in turn 4 for an early Red. Lap-7: Yellow is out after Kennedy slows with a engine issue. Russell and Goettsche were lapped cars when they tangled into the wall in turn 4.

360 B Feature (18 Laps)
1. Charlie Taylor [7]; 2. Gene Brudigan [2]; 3. Tim Miklos [6]; 4. Guy Vacura [9]; 5. Paul Riggs [5]; 6. Eric Huntley [4]; 7. Bob Werkmeister [1]; DNF-Dennis Parker [3]; DNF-Mackie Heimbaugh [4]. DNS-Jon Barger, DNS-Greg Smith, DNS-Harlow Thompson, DNS-Doug Wasmund, DNS-Dwaine Hansen, DNS-Lonnie Jensen, DNS-Tom Whiting.

Like only half the qualified field is back tonight. Nine Cars starting. G. Brudigan leads the opening laps until about the sixth lap when Taylor takes over and the remaining distance.

410 B Feature (20 Laps)
1. Bobby Houseman [5]; 2. Jimmy Grafton [22]; 3. John Sernett [3]; 4. Roger Rager [7]; 5. Jeff Gordon [18]; 6. Gary Zitterich [11]; 7. Brian Keck [4]; 8. Darrel Daugherty [19]; 9. Tim Baker [23]; 10. Spike Lempelius [9]; 11. Rick Daugherty [24];12. Rick Lemanski [12]; 13. Steve Carithers [21]; 14. Gary Lusk [10]; 15. Bruce Drottz [2]; 16. Bob Johnson [8]; 17. Kenny Biertzer [13]; 18. Jim Kouba [15]; 19. Dave Jacobs [16]; [6]; DNF-Gary DeWall [17]; DNF-Dave Hannah. DNS-Greg Wooley [1]; DNS-Jimmy Bell [14]; DNS-Tim Monson [20]; DNS-Keith Frantsen.

Not sure what happened to Frantsen after the C. Drottz into an immediate lead over the field. Lap-10: Red is out after Hannah has some issue (?). Lap-16: Yellow is out after DeWall stalls with engine issue. Lap-17: Drottz surrenders the lead after spinning all by himself in turn 2. Sernett inherits the lead over Houseman for about a lap after the restart until Houseman takes it and the final three laps to the win. Excellent run by Grafton from the C to the A along with Gordon from the tail to fifth.

360 A Feature (25 Laps)
1. Bill Rook [1] $1,000; 2. Kevin McIntyre [5]; 3. John Gerloff [2]; 4. Charlie Taylor [21]; 5. Doug Navara [4];
6. Russell Kuhnau [14]; 7. Glen Berkner [20]; 8. Randy Rosenboom [13]; 9. Gary Zitterich [15]; 10. Dirk VonHeeder [16]; 11. Tim Miklos [22]; 12. Cliff Koidahl [10]…
DNF-Gene Brudigan [23]; DNF-Guy Vacura [24]; DNF-Mike Brudigan [6]; DNF-JD Hommes [8]; DNF-Brian Schnee [17]; DNF-Kurt Johnson [12]; DNF-Dean Hopp [7]; DNF-Bill Smith [11]; DNF-Dean Chadd [9]; DNF-Todd Wessels [3]; DNS-Fran Bruns [18]; DNS-Randy Roeman [19].
Lap leader: Bill Rook 1-25.

Lap-2: Red is out after Wessels slides way high in turn 3 and smacks the wall. After flipping the car, he lands on all fours. Chadd tags the stalled machine sending him upside down as well. Lap-6: Red is out after Schnee initially slowed on the frontstretch sending Smith and Hopp to find a way around him only to tangle with severe rolls onto the frontstretch fence line at the flag stand. It sounded as nasty as it looked. Schnee would later stall in the event for the second time and was sent pit side. Lap-12: Yellow is out after Johnson stalls in turn 2. Lap-19: Yellow is out after VonHeeder spins in turn 4. A series of two yellows for (?). McIntyre attempts to make a bid for the lead, but Rook withstands.

8th Jackson Nationals Championship (30 Laps)
1. Bobby Allen [1] $7,500; 2. Dave Blaney [3]; 3. Brad Doty [7]; 4. Danny Lasoski [2]; 5. Rodney Duncan [14];
6. Marlon Jones [12]; 7. Kelly Kinser [8]; 8. John Stevenson [6]; 9. John Sernett [23]; 10. Gordy Vogelaar [18];

Lap leaders: Danny Lasoski 1-6, Bobby Allen 7-19, 24-30, Dave Blaney 20-23.

Green flag drops a little after midnight. The opening lap was marred with a nasty tangle between Ferkel and Richert in turn 1 above and over the banking. Both were Ok, done for the night. Both cars were severely mangled. Lasoski takes control over Allen on the restart for the lead in the opening laps. Lap-7: Allen takes the lead a lap previous and begins to catch the tail end of the field. Lap-9: Red is out after contact between the 2nd spot Lasoski and Sills ends with Sills getting into the wall turns 3-4. Sills suffered a concussion just last week at Knoxville, but is otherwise Ok after tonight’s wreck. Blaney takes the 2nd spot from Lasoski on the restart. Lap-11: Yellow is out after contact between Chapman and Brahmer sends both pit side. Lasoski and Doty battle and swap the 3rd spot for a few laps between 15 and 19, with Allen down low and Blaney up high race side-by-side. Blaney is credited with the lead around twenty. Lap-24: Traffic, Allen retakes the possession of the lead from Blaney. Lap-26: Hodges was running 5th until he ducks into the pits with engine failure. Other than Allen celebrating the Nationals win, Grafton had the race of the night, passing nearly 40 cars before calling it a night.

Something for Pee Wee: The promo of Junior used in the 1984 weekly racing program.

scan0001-3-1.jpg Junior 1984 picture by Michael__P

His wreck at Rocky in 1987 with the broken neck deal remember crying until I found out he was gonna be Ok. Super Smurf was often used on the 9K as Junior's logo and he was protecting that day in June for sure. Junior, Doug Navara and Harlow Thompson were a good bunch to camp out at like Hartford and Huset's when we left the confines of Jackson.
