MIXED BAG FOR SEXTON/GATLIN RACING AT BAKERSFIELD – VENTURA THIS SATURDAY!

(Lakeside, CA, March 21, 2019) For Sexton/Gatlin Racing, it was a mixed back of results when the POWRi California Lightning Sprint Car Series opened the 2019 season last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway.  This Saturday, the family racing trio will head north to the CLS home track, the Ventura Raceway.  Spectator gates at the beachside track will open at 3:00 P.M. with racing at 5:30.

The program for last Saturday’s race in Bakersfield got off to a rough start when a local power outage cut off all juice to the track.  That forced CLS officials to scrub qualifying and have the teams draw for their starting positions in the three, eight-lap heat races.  Fortunately, all three of the Sexton’s were in different heats.  Father Brent started outside the third row in the first heat, but fuel pump problems saw him finish eighth.  Dalton, who at 16 is the oldest of Brent’s two sons, came out in the second heat.  He started fourth and ended up seventh.  Fourteen-year-old Grant, who was the 2018 CLS Rookie of the Year, started on the outside of the third row in the fourth heat and placed fifth.

The heat race finishes saw all three of the Sexton “Speed Demons” forced to run the B-Main.  That race would transfer the top eight finishers to the main event.  Grant started inside the second row, with Brent outside the fourth pairing and Dalton on the inside of the fifth stanza.  Unfortunately, the persistent fuel pump issues for Brent saw him pull off after three-laps and the two-time series champion was done for the night.  On the other hand, Grant brought it home in third and sibling Dalton finished eighth.  Thus, both boys earned their tickets into the 25-lap main.

Due to coming from the B Main, both youngsters would have to come from deep in the field in the main event.  They were nose to tail with Grant on the inside of the eighth row and Dalton on the inside of the ninth.

Things progressed smoothly over the first three laps, but Dalton was part of a minor skirmish in turn four on the fourth circuit that brought out a yellow flag.  Fortunately, during the yellow flag period, Grant had a right front torsion arm break and he turned over on the front straight.  How could that be considered as fortunate?  If the race had gone back to green and the torsion arm broke at that point, the consequences could have been very serious.  At the low speed he turned over at during the yellow, he was able to crawl away from the beautiful, but then bent #3 uninjured.  Unfortunately, he finished 19th.

When the race resumed, it went the final 23-laps without another stoppage and one of the main shows on the track was Dalton.  Having to restart at the back after the yellow, he weaved his way through the field for an impressive 10th place finish.  By virtue of his initial 17th place starting spot, he was the race “Hard Charger” having passed more cars than anyone else in the 25-lapper.

This Saturday night, Sexton/Gatlin Racing heads to the Ventura Raceway for the first of eight-times in 2019.  Last year, Ventura was very good to the team.  Brent recorded two main event second-place finishes.  Rookie Dalton had his best CLS finish of the year there with a third and Grant’s best finish at the picturesque oval was a sixth.

Fans who would like to watch the Sextons race at Ventura on Saturday can find the track on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001).  The track website is http://venturaraceway.com/ and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE.
