I was on the Speedway Motors Museum website looking at all the displays, and saw that they have the #65 roadster sprint car that Joe Saldana drove for them. I lived in Lincoln NE during that time, and I seem to remember going out and getting the Sunday paper in order to read about the Knoxville results, and seeing a picture of the #65 cut in half from an accident at that track. Am I remembering that right? Is that what happened? As I remember, Joe was not seriously hurt, which was a miracle.

Joe Saldana did indeed tear his car in half.  It happened on May 4, 1968 at Knoxville.  He tangled with Thad Dosher and ripped the front of the car off in the crash.  Joe suffered a wrist injury but was back racing soon after.  The car was repaired and Joe was quickly back winning races in the Mechanical Rabbit.
