ROA FINISHES 5TH AT KNOXVILLE RACEWAY!
(Cypress, CA, June 14, 2018) Racer Brody Roa journeyed to the nation’s Heartland last week for a pair of races in the USAC National Sprint Car Series. The Southern California veteran caught the attention of series regulars with a hard fought fifth place finish at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World,” the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
The trip to the Midwest started on Wednesday when Brody’s father Brett pointed the team hauler towards I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska for a race last Friday night. Brody and the crew flew out last Thursday and prepped the car with Brett for Friday’s race on the 4/10 of a mile-high banked oval.
Roa ended up 11th fastest of the 26 qualifiers at the Cornhusker state track with a lap of 17.038. He followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the second heat race and an automatic ticket to the 30-lap main event.
Fifty-three weeks earlier, the Garden Grove, California racer competed on the same Nebraska soil in sweltering temperatures and brisk winds and finished fifth in the main. The same could not be said for last Friday. He started 11th and ended up finishing 14th.
“At I-80 last night we missed it,” Roa told USAC’s Georgia Henneberry the following night at Knoxville. “We were way to free running up around the fence. I couldn’t get it to stop on the bottom to save my life.”
Earlier in the week, Saturday’s race at Knoxville looked to be threatened by rain. If the race had been canceled, it would have made a long, expensive trip for one race for the BR Performance team. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and Roa put on a show for the fans. In only his second ever appearance at Knoxville, he qualified ninth in the 24-car field with a lap of 19.280. A few minutes later he placed fourth in his heat race and qualified directly into the main event for the second night in a row.
Competing in the world’s #1 traditional sprint car series, Roa started ninth in the 30-lap main and quickly worked his way up to seventh. He was still seventh with three laps remaining before picking off two more cars to finish fifth in the race which ran green to checkered with no yellow or red flags.
“This place is cool just because of the history,” Roa told Henneberry after the race. “To have non-wing cars back at Knoxville is a pretty cool deal and we are glad to be a part of it. We tightened the car up a lot more. We went and did about double what we did last night (at I-80 Speedway). It worked pretty good and we went forward tonight.”
Back in California now, the team is preparing the #91R for its next race at Perris Auto Speedway on June 23rd. The 27-year-old racer enters that race third in USAC/CRA points. However, he is a mere six-points out of second and only 21-points out of third.
