OK, a question about driving from a guy who has never driven & will never drive a sprint car: When do they use their brakes? Let off gas? (if ever....)

I wreck constantly even on simulators, can't stop laughing the whole time....

depends on track. after you learn how to drag the brake, then you got your chit together. some tracks you need it to stop before running into your pit crew and that's about it. some guys like a short throttle pedal, some like a long pedal, if the track slicks off early your touch on the pedal to keep the tires under you is the most important thing to do. DS is the best there is at it. go ask RW i'm sure he be more than happy to tell you how much travel he puts in his drivers right foot.

I am just a fan, but I talked to one long time driver, many time Champion and he told me that the brake is just as important as the loud pedal.  As far as when and where to use it?  I have no clue.  Best answer would be what alum.427 said, it depends on the track

Use the brake to help set the car going in and reduce wheel spin coming off.  Instead of stabbing the brake, try rolling into it and "dragging" the pedal.  Each driver is a bit different as well as how you lift or not off the throttle pedal based on track size and conditions.

There are also "progressive throttle pedals" out there to help on slick tracks (popular in OH). Not everyone can be Dale Blaney on the slick Smile

No doubt. That is why i said most guys are dragging the brake, be it on corner entry or trying to keep the car low thru the corner and coming off the bottom. You want to drive thru the slick part of the track as straight as you possibly can. Controlling wheel speed is critical, and dragging the brake and having a longer throttle helps in both cases.  Any driver that can master that will be there for the win. You want to go 1 step further let's start adjusting the top wing. You can have the best crew chief out there, if you don't understand how to control the 2 pedals on the floor and that 5 x 5 above your head. That crew chief is going to find someone that can.
