Hughes Claims Inaugural Sooner Late Model Event in Ardmore!

Ardmore, Oklahoma – April 15, 2016 - Kip Hughes survived numerous cautions and repeated challenges by Shannon Scott to claim the inaugural Sooner Late Model Series feature event Friday night at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Oklahoma as they were a part of the tracks special “Fast Friday Series.”

Hughes and Plano, Texas driver Phil Miller started on the front row for the scheduled twenty lap feature with Hughes taking the lead as the green flag fell. Fourth starting Scott moved into the runner up position with Miller and Nate Jantz the top four after the first lap was completed.

Cautions were at a premium, cutting the feature down to a seventeen lap event but that was the least of Kips worries as each restart would see Scott dive under the rim-riding Hughes coming out of turn two with Hughes’ momentum keeping his familiar #60 out front on each of Scotts attempts.

On that final restart, Hughes once again used the exit of turn two on the high side and keep Scott from driving underneath and dove down low in turns three and four to thwart any attempted pass by Scott to claim the victory.

“This is just great,” said an elated Hughes in victory lane. “To have this good of a car count on the first race (22) is something special and I’m proud to be a part of this deal. I think it’s going to be a great thing for late model racing here in Oklahoma. The track dried out a little bit but was still very racy. I knew Scott was down there (in turn two) and I just kept my momentum up and it all worked out.”

Scott finished three car lengths behind in second while seventh starting Dalton Ragsdale came home third. Twelfth starting Eddie Martin worked his way through the field to finish fourth while eighth starting Mark Harrison rounded out the top five.

The three, six lap heat races for the twenty-two car field were won by Gary Lowe, Nate Jantz and Hughes.

The next event for the Sooner Late Model Series will be held on Saturday night, April 30, at Oklahoma Sports  Park in Ada, Oklahoma. You can keep track of all the series updates including inaugural 2016 schedule, point standings and race updates on their official website www.soonerlatemodelseries.com.
