Ralph "Ralphie The Racer" Blackett Knoxville, Iowa

May 2007

I couldn't find somekind of obituary on the net, but have had several e-mails in the last couple of weeks about Ralph's passing.

The below was in reply to this forum dated 6-17-09

Ralph was my dad. Per his wishes, there was no obituary made. However he did not say that I could get the word ot any other way, so the day after his death an announcement was made during a weekly saturday night race at Knoxville, Thanks to Pizza Dude. I appologize to all wh would have wanted to know, but he wanted to die quiet. Which is kinda Ironic since he didn't live very quiet.

Thanks to all who remember him with words and Pictures. He died May 12, 2007 at the Knoxville VA Hospital.

Clifton E. "Woody" Woodward
,64, of Kearney, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at home, after a three-year courageous struggle with bladder cancer. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Park Lawn Northland Chapel, with services at 10 a.m. Monday at the Northland Chapel. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kearney, Mo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas City Hospice. Cliff was born December 4, 1941, in Moberly, Mo., the son of Lyle and Mary Ruth (Montague) Woodward. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harry Dale Woodward. Cliff graduated from Edina High School in 1959, where he excelled in sports, especially track. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. He moved to Kansas City in 1962, and worked for Ford Motor Company, and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 249, for 30 years before retiring in 1992. He later operated C-Woody Mowing & Bobcat in Kearney. He was a member of the Christian Church in Plevna, Mo., and the Excelsior Springs Golf Club. Cliff raced Sprint cars throughout the Midwest for over 20 years. He was inducted into the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame in 1996. Later on, he enjoyed playing golf, going to the boat, and going on vacations- the most memorable two being the celebration of his 40th wedding anniversary with his family at the Cayman Islands in 2004, and celebrating his 42nd wedding anniversary in January with friends in Yuma, Arizona. Cliff is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janice, of the home; two children, Darin Woodward and his companion Pam Wisecup, along with her daughter Allison and granddaughter Maggie, all of Kearney, Mo., and Debbie Johnston and her husband Theron of Holt, Mo., and a granddaughter, McLain. Cliff loved his family very much, and lived life to the fullest. He especially loved meeting his friends every morning at the Liar's table for breakfast. Cliff watched out for the little guy, as that was where he was from, and he never forgot his meager upbringing. We will miss his sense of humor, his orneriness, his laughter, and we will never forget him. He will have a place in our hearts forever, and we will love him forever.

Buddy Roy Purkey, passed away peacefully early this morning after a long bout with Cancer. Diagnosed in 2003 with Cancer, Bud along with his wife of 46 years Wanda Jean, set out to fight the battle as if they were preparing to race one of his legendary race cars.
Bud, a no nonsense kinda-guy, along with Wanda brought up their three children-Son's Mike and Allen along with Daughter Vicky. Instilled with the beliefs to be self sufficient, motivated, educated and prideful. Today the family, Wife and Mother Wanda Jean, along with Mike and wife Dena, Al and wife Sabrina, Daughter Vicky and husband Russell (Portwood) have provided Bud and Wanda with seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bud began a career in the Auto and Salvage business right next to his Farm raising Cattle. Bud was a weekend hobby racer of the late 60's running the open-wheeled Super Modifieds at Nowata Oklahoma and later at Lakeside Speedway in Dewey. It wasn't until '74 or '75 that Bud switched to what would now be called a Late Model Stock Car, he continued to race when time would allow running under the Sanctioning of NDRA, NCRA, and MLRA. Bud continued to race when he felt he could, his last race was in 2006 at Coffeyville.
In 1991, Bud with Wanda by-his side, opened Stateline Speedway adjacent to their homestead property and began a new career of Track Owner and Operator. Bud was successful in having Sprints, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks competing at his track - the track closed in 2003 when Bud became too sick to run it.

Robert "Commander Bob" Cody

1944-2010

Robert "Commander Bob" Cody, 65, of Amarillo died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Oasis Southwest Baptist Church with David Green, chaplain of Hospice of the Southwest, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Bob was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Amarillo to Eugene and Dorothy Cody. In his younger years, Bob was an avid football player who played for the Maverick Boys Club under Coach Dykemon. Bob got to play in the championship game at the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl and the Las Vegas Bowl while playing for Coach Dykemon. In high school, Bob played at Palo Duro High School and later in life coached Kids, Inc. for his son's team at Lawndale, where they won championships for a couple of years in a row.

At the age of 16, Bob bought his first race car but he was too young to drive, so he had Vern Mullenix and Putt Putt Roberts drive it for him. When Bob got old enough to drive, he built his first stock car. Bob drove stock cars for about four years then switched to super modifieds, and from the late 1960s to the 1980s, he became one of the best drivers around Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. That's when he became known as "Commander Bob," winning numerous championships.

Bob drove for Jack B. Cooper and retired after 25 years as a teamster. After retirement, he spent as much of his time as he could at his place at Greenbelt Lake, and it became his home away from home. Bob's friends at the lake became his second family. This is when he became known as "Calm, Crazy, Crotchety Buddy." Bob also was known as the "Mayor of the Beach Club," because if he saw anybody down on the beach, he was the first one to jump on his golf cart and let them know it was a private club and they had to leave. Also, he let everybody that had a place around him know to make sure to pull their sand burs.

He was preceded in death by his mom and dad and his best friend, Dick Sheffield.

Survivors include two kids, Bryan Cody and Cinnamon Cody, both of Amarillo; four grandkids, Candace, Brennon, Jacob and Devyn; three sisters, Darlene Sollberger, Wanda Lee and Ginger Johnston, all of Amarillo; a brother, Tommy Jack Cody of Modesto, Calif.; Bob's dog, Teka; and his special friends, Barbara Slattery and Rodney Patton.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Sharpe, Tonya and staff at Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and Francis, Susan and staff at Hospice Care of the Southwest.

The family suggests memorials be to Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or to Hospice Care of the Southwest, 1301 S. Coulter St., Suite 404, Amarillo, TX 79106.
