Does anybody remember this old 98 sedan body from Monet, MO? It's one that Jr Horton drove. Would like to hear some history on the car and the driver so I can pass it on to the current owner. It's being redone to race again!! I'll post some more pics when they get the steel wheels on, these are only on for roll around purposes.

Thanks

They never ran Jalopys at Monett Mo at Monett Speedway ..They never ran Supermods there or even Coupe or Sedan Modifieds there ether..If it is from Monett Missouri it probably ran at Joplin Mo Ozark Speedway. Or maybe Neosho Mo at 71 Speedway only 30 miles to both places.Or maybe down in NW Arkansas at Crawford County Speedway.60 miles south...Monett Speedway started in 1970 when the Modifieds and Supermods quit in the Joplin area..Neosho ran this style Modifieds from about 1965 to 1971.Joplin ran this style Modifieds from 1950 to 1971.Monett started in 1970 and ran Full bodys and Late Models and then picked up the IMCA Mods a few years late when they started..Most of the coupe and sedans ran in Joplin and Neosho and some traveled to Tulsa or NW Ark untill about 68 then they started to change the same way Tulsa did in 1968 with the Supermods type car but some coupes and sedan still ran with them untill 1971 in Joplin and Neosho.

By the looks of this car it looks like it is mid to late 60s,,,more of a Modified than a Jalopy from the mid to late 60s time..This car looks familiar but not with 98 on it,, i cant put anything on it right now in my mind ,,,, my records are in storage because of the Tornado in Joplin and i cant get to them for some time to come...But i do remember a Horton that did race i think it was Joplin in the late 60s.I will make a few calls and see if any of my buddys can find a pic or help me with this one...Maybe some of the guys on here can look at this car and see it it rings any bells...There is something very familiar about the way this car looks.Maybe it had another number before 98......

I do remember some people got cars like this around 1967 or 68 and when the Supermods took ahold in 68 in Joplin there were alot of these type coupes and sedans parked and never finished because they were not to competetive with the new Supermods..This could be one one them.I know this car with 98 on it did not have a winning history or a long life in Joplin or Neosho in the mid to late 60s

Come on guys does this car look familiar to any of you. This is a good looking car maybe one of you guys can find a match with another number on it...........Tim

We found a picture of this car in the 1967 picture book from Joplin Mo Ozark Speedway..It is white with the same 98 on the side of it.By the picture you posted it looks pretty much the same as it did then...No sponsers can be seen on the car in the picture..It was drivin by a Junior Horton...I knew i remembered the name ..For it to be in the picture book we found it in it would have had to be at the early part of the 1967 year at Joplins Ozark Speedway..They put that picture book out early that year..

Looks like a great find from the time frame...Joplin had alot of history from that time with the Coupe and Sedan modifieds. If they put on the car that it came from that time frame from Joplin Mo and Ozark Speedway they will get some feed back from fans.....Tell them i said good luck with the car..If i seen a car that said it was from Joplin late 1960s racing in a ventage race i would be all over it checking it out.......Good luck to them........Tim Belk

Thanks for the info! This body was found in a salvage yard in the Monet area and the yard owner bought it from Jr's widow. Jr's business name is located on the rear of the car. One of Jr's other cars recently sold on Ebay from out of Texas (it had been in NW Ark. and had been rat rodded), it was a coupe with the same number on it. The frame that was under that car as a race car is still in NWA along with the frame from another coupe from that area, number 86, that body is at a friends house in Oklahoma.

Does anyone know where a copy of the 1967 picture book can be purchased?

Are you kin to Jack Belk?

Thanks again!

I know of 4 or 5 copys of the book but nobody will sell them ..............It was a program like you get at the race tracks back then a special issue .I got one of them left..It is funny because in the book on the front page it had,,,,,,, my Dad Jack Belk ,,, and Pete York on the front cover but it has the names backwards. It had Belk under Yorks Picture and York under Belks Picture.Pete York was in the Del Torence #1 blue and white sedan and Belk was in a Jay Carnes sedan maron #5 .. in `1967

They took a picture of all the car the first week or to of that year and put it out like a year book..It was the only year they did that. It was also the first full year that the Tulsa guys came to Joplin and ran the full year. Also it was the last year for only Coupes and Sedan Modifieds in Joplin the next year the Supermods skinnyer cars came in but alot of the coupes and Sedan still ran with them. That book has helped alot with deals like this..I wish now i would have bought 50 copys when it came out i did get about 10 back then but gave them to family and friends,, i could have gave out 20 or more in the last 4 or 5 years.

Thanks Bruce for asking this is another reason this forum is so fun it makes you dig back and remember thing long forgot about. If i find any more pics of this car i will let you know i did call 3 or 4 of my buddys ... Tim Belk

Thanks again. I told the guys about it and they said they would look it up on here.

Also I was told that you already knew about a 46 Ford flatbed pickup that is in our area that is one of the old Jack Belk trucks. I've tried several times to buy it, just can't get the guy to part with it!

Thanks again

That truck is Not Jack Belk the race car driver..It is a different Jack Belk..I checked it out and it is not one of my Dads old trucks......It got my going for a day or to last year when i heard about it.......That Jack Belk was some kind of traveling handy mechanic and a pretty good one as we heard over the years. There were some people that got dad mixed up with him at the Oklahoma Race tracks from time to time...We had heard of him before when Dad was still alive. They were kinda in the same type of work.

Dad had a bussness back in the late 50s that was Jacks Diesel service,he was in the Teamsters and leed man for Jones Truck lines and he would work on the trucks at home at night during the week for the company and for independent drivers and truck owners..Then he had J-J Gokart shop in the garage that went into the 60s.Everybody was Racing GoKarts back then also...He worked at Jones Trucklines for over 20 years untill he died. .Then when he started traveling longer distance to race in the 60s no time for a shop.He was making good money racing on the side...If you didnt know he died from racing injurys in 1971 from a crash in Topeka Ks in a Wingless Sprint car..As a kid with him,,i was ether handing him wrenches under a truck ot test driving a GoKart around the block or chasing my brother randy in one or on the way to the Races whereever it might be...Pretty fun childhood... Sorry about your Dad, seems I had heard about what had happened. Glad to know the info on the truck, I would like to have the old truck just because it's an old truck, but not as much as before when I thought it was your Dads.

I was introduced to Mods and Super Mods by my Dad as a kid in California in the sixties and after we moved back to Oklahoma, I turned a few wrenches in his shop before going on to other things. By the time I started hitting the tracks, the mods were gone around here and it was Late Models that still looked like a production car that ruled the tracks. I do remember checking out the Super Mod results in the papers and the TV news for the Tulsa track.

Here's another pic of the Jr Horton 34 Chevy sedan, it appears that he ran a Termite Control business.

my name is Sherry Sigler & well im not sure what to start with... My Dad use to race those tracks as we were kids. Ive heard my mom talk about Jr. & a lot of the references ive heard here in all ur story's. i dare say ive seen some of those pics & memories pop in my head like popcorn. Heres the thing... My Dad Jerry, was killed in a auto accident ( not at the races)in 1971. at his funeral 7 blocks of racers came to support our family. im just tryin to find someone who might remember him on the tracks. I googled his name & the tracks i heard my mom talk about & this particular conversation on the old dirt tracks came online. Any thing would be nice so please if anyone remembers Jerry Sigler , he raced under #44 & another # but cant remember now. I have some pic of my Dad i will try to post & Thank You.
