I'm back from two awesome nights of Florida sprint car racing.
Personally, I think I planned the perfect road trip for someone in my situation.
Savannah is a cruising five hours away from Charlotte providing the perfect midway stopping point for a nine to fiver looking to wet their whistle before offseason dreams of methanol inhalants and $5 clear glasses from the Schatz rig become reality.
The irish term "wet your whistle" actually came from blowing into a whistle attached at the handle of your pint in Ireland... Try doing that today and see what happens.
I really didn't have a point to this story or even a story at all. I simply wanted to brag about how awesome my weekend was.
Savannah is such an historic town loaded with engraved information that you can read about while sipping the finest local IPAs openly.
Well.... no matter how awesome Savannah was and will always be, I needed to head down to Ocala. The USCS always puts on an awesome show and this time they have the National USAC Midgets there.
Every damn race, midgets and sprints, were awesome as hell... And then the features blew it out of the water.
If you didn't pay attention to Sunshine stinking up the midget feature, you would have thought 2nd place paid millions to win.
With turns three and four at Bubba's possibly being the most difficult corner in the history of sprint car racing, it was responsible for creating some of the biggest traffic jams in racing. Sam Jr seemed unstoppable till lapped traffic, but Franek looked like he was willing to sacrifice all, until Smoke almost nipped him at the line.
So thankful I made a stop at Ocala before heading toward Barberville. Truly awesome racing.
Volusia County and the Outlaws have created a monster. Heading East on 40 from Ocala, two miles before you get to the track, campers, jeeps, and KIA Souls are clogging up gas stations everywhere.
Knowing the head Outlaw guy, I'm somewhat expecting a complimentary pit pass. What I wasn't expecting was so many damn people paying for pit passes. When the hell has this line ever been so damn long. When I heard some sprints fire up for hot laps, I rushed toward general admission, threw my wallet at her, and hauled ass toward the highest bench I could find.
You can still see a lot from row one apparently.
Man... I had an awesome week... I strongly encourage everyone to visit Savannah. History everywhere.
Bubba's Raceway is one of the most unique tracks in the country and high car counts will always make it one of the most unpredictable races.
Volusia. Its so fast. So many grooves. Everyone is racing the best equipment they have. They are trying to get ahead of the points game. The competition shown at Volusia for the Outlaw championship isn't going to be higher anywhere else.
My two and a half day vacation has come to an end. God it was awesome.
