Can someone explain the idea behind teh square tail tank on the Swindells' midgets?  Also...there's a 47 out there (McCreadie has driven it in the past, but not this year) that doesnt seem to HAVE a tail tank.  I'd love some additional information on these midgets.  Thanks in advance!

It does make rear end shorter, and they believe itbcar hits it from rear the car hitting it is less likely to spin it out

I've seen people say things like more downforce... some guys put a little flare (acting like a spoiler) on the end of the square tank. But this shortening the car idea makes way more sense, smaller moment. So many times you see a car get all out of shape in the middle of the corner when it gets tagged on the tail bumper.

Thinking out loud.... I wonder if it has to do with changing the weight distribution of the car by changing where the weight of the fuel sits?

In Sammy's case the primary purpose is to get people to focus on the shape of the tail vs the grumpy old asshole behind the wheel.....

That is another reason Murphy. Micro guys do it too. I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe the Swindell cars, the "Tank" you see is actually a carbon fiber cover, the actual fuel tank is a smaller tank inside it. Not 100% on that, but I though I saw a picture of one of them with the cover off. With the standard tanks, the fuel sits behind and below the torsion tubes, with those square tanks, the fuel sits above and in front of the torsion tubes. It definitely changes the weight distribution and centers it over the rear tires more. In my head, that really is not what does much, as it also moves the wieght forward, however what I think makes the most difference is by moving the weight of the fuel up, it raises the center of gravity on the race car. That will create a race car that transfers more weight and makes the car tighter.

Personally I think it's about looks.   Sammy started at Riverside Speedway in the old modified sportsman class, which us racing fans in Memphis called a "B" car.     Sprint cars were "A" cars and stockers were "C" cars.   The "B" cars at Riverside all had that same shape of tail tank.    I imagine he intends it as a throwback look into the 70s.

On RacinBoys last night they mentioned that the square fuel tank helps with fuel pickup when talking about Jonathan Beason's ride. A year or two Roger Crockett put a square tank on his winged sprint car, but I don't know how often he ran with it.

I say yes.  weight is moved forward which will move rear weight forward  for more traction and less centrifical force trying to spin car out.  It also will keep more weight percent weight forward and less wheel stands.  I may be wrong but this is my logic.

Joe Gaerte did this about 25 years  ago.  Had square tank under a fiberglass tail tank.

Well, maybe....A lot of years back I recall and article in Open Wheel Magazine entitled something like The Chrome Hood Ornament. It was about some fast, high-profile team that put some fancy doo-dad on their car and bragged up how it made the car handle so much better. In fact, the doo-dad was to draw attention away from some other detail that did make the car handle better. Bonus: in short order, other teams started putting on chrome hood ornaments.

Maybe the square tank is a decoy and Sammy is running eliptical radius rods instead of round. wink

I remember that Open Wheel article.   I think it was the "Chrome Eagle Syndrome".    Guy who hasn't won in a long time shows up with a chrome eagle on the front of his car and dusts everyone in the feature.   Next week everyone in the pits will have a chrome eagle on their hood.   Or something like that...

Yep I remember Roger running one I *think* at Winter Heat in Cocopah (could be wrong but it was very early in the season) and was told he had to change to a "normal" tailtank and couldn't run the square one.  I believe he ran it at the event or race he was at, but then had to change it out.
