A green, white, checkered situation had fallen upon the crowd last night during the Carolina Sprint Tour at Lakeview Speedway in Nichols, SC.

Finding ourselves riding in fourth, I had a strange sensation that Jake was going to pull off another one. I didn’t know how, but I did know he’s had a habit of performing these type of impossible feats late in a feature.

Standing atop the observation tower in the infield rotating three hundred and sixty degrees as the cars cautioned around the speedway, my brotherly instinct knew exactly what he was about do. And if we had radio communication, I wouldn’t argue the risk he was about to take.

The yellow went dark and as the cars were idling down the backstretch itching to smash the fun button, I saw Jacob duck low.

Yeap… he’s going for it.

Unfortunately for the brother, his teammate also named Jake in front of him had the same intentions. I, like a lot of family, friends, and local sprint car enthusiasts are curious to see where this rivalry takes us considering their main competition is separated only by a refrigerator filled with John and your writer’s beer!

As the two cars touched Hoosier tires in a way sprint cars aren’t supposed to touch Hoosier tires coming out of four to the green, I winced knowing this could get really bad. As the wreck unfolded in a way that left barely any survivors, I started trotting toward the scene of the crash liked a wounded duck.

Damn that jumper’s knee.

With Jake’s car on all four wheels and watching him climb out provided relief. The anxiety of a fellow driver’s car still on its side created an unknown mindset. With fluids running down the banking, if this car ignites, how long does one wait for a hero climb up to the driver’s side and help free the trapped?

The situations running through my mind of what could have happened, but thankfully didn’t happen, will always rest in the back of one’s mind.

As Chaz’s car eventually came to a rest on all four wheels thanks to a great safety crew, and Chaz eased his way out of the car and told everyone he’s fine and he’ll race another day, I walked over to a dejected brother knowing he wasn’t hurt, but still asking if he was alright.

He calmly asked the standard question every driver asks when they know they messed up, “What happened?”

And being an honest guy, I simply told him…”You f***** up.”

I sensed he already knew that was going to be my answer and I was proud I could be honest with him while he accepted his humility.

Jake would head east later that night to be with his other family, while I struggled with sleep deprivation to make it home in time for work.

Thankfully he called me a few times throughout the night to make sure I was making it home safe. Of course the conversations immediately gravitated toward the inevitable.

And my answers were always the same.

“Jake, you were trying to win a race. Winning sprint car races requires taking extreme chances, and unfortunately this time it didn’t work out. You are one of the cleanest sprint car racers in the Carolinas. Don’t let this deter you from seizing another opportunity to prove how great you are next time the opportunity presents itself.”

We’ll be back stronger than ever… And we hope everyone else comes back stronger than ever. It’s only going to make us all even better….
