Sad to report that longtime Los Angeles Times motorsports journalist and Motorsports Hall of Famer Shav Glick passed away early this morning. Shav covered it all in Motorsports and one of his favorites was Sprint Car racing. That was evidenced by his tremendous support of first Ascot and then The PAS until he retired in January 2006. He will be sorely missed by all of his friends and his readers.

A Sad day :-( I've missed his Friday Articles in the L.A. Times! A real Touch of Class and Excellence, God Speed Mr. Glick... "Sad News - Shav Glick: Former Los Angeles Times beat writer Shav Glick passed away Saturday morning in his Pasadena (Calif.) home after a bout with cancer. He was 86 years old. A native Californian, Glick got his first byline in a daily newspaper in 1935 at the Pasadena Post - he was 14 years old. In 1954, legendary publisher Otis Chandler recruited Glick to the Los Angeles Mirror, which became a part of the Los Angeles Times in 1963. In 1969, Glick began covering motorsports for the Times, retiring from that post in January 2006. In 2004, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He was only the fourth person in the 18-year history of the Motor Press Guild to receive a lifetime achievement award, and was a member of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame. Shortly after his retirement, Glick was honored as the Grand Marshal of the 2006 Auto Club 500 at California Speedway.(NASCAR PR)(10-20-2007)"

Racer_18 gave a good synopsis of the article in the Sunday Times at http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-glick21oct21,0,4280651.story?coll=la-home-obituaries

I had a long conversation with him at one of the Palm Springs Vintage Races years ago. The man's knowledge of racing in Southern California was utterly encyclopedic. I hope some bibliography of his -thousands- of articles becomes available at some point, along with access to them at the Times. One could pretty much read the entire history of racing out here (at least since WWII) in his work. I expect authors like Wallin and Osmer would agree. Shav knew where -everything- was buried.

Curt Cavin of the Indianapolis Star has a nice thing about Shav.

Unfortunately I can't seem to cut and paste it in to this message.

I'm so vexed I could stamp my feet.

Oct. 20: On the loss of Shav Glick and vacation time

Curt's note: This is the last batch of questions for a few days; I'm actually going to take this coming week off. Oh, I'll still catch myself logging on to the computer (some of you know how I am), but I'm going to try to separate myself from work. Therefore, the next Q&A will be Monday, Oct. 29. OK?!

The passing of a friend: One of the greats in my profession passed away this morning, and I can't let this opportunity to mention it go by. Shav Glick might have been the motor sports reporter for the Los Angeles Times, but he was a friend to all and a true gentleman. I'm not sure how old Shav was (an obit isn't yet on the Times' Website), but I know a couple of years ago he sent me an e-mail that noted his rare feat in golf: He finished a round with a score that beat his age. Shav was already in his 60s when we met 20-some years ago, but we instantly hit it off. Truth is, that's how it was with everyone who met him. He was an excellent dinner companion, a crafty storyteller and a fine writer. He had an amazing ability to flow between circles, professionally and personally, and I'll never forget the week we spent together in 2001. We were sitting near each other at the Daytona 500 when Dale Earnhardt was killed and from there we traveled together, went to memorials together and covered the following week's NASCAR race at Rockingham together. That was a horrible week for the sport, but Shav made it one of my favorites. That's how wonderful it was to be in his company.
