To promote and cancel events in March and early April in the Midwest, or out East for that matter?? I know everyone is excited for race season but it is always cold even on nice days come race night! It has to be tough to draw families out for these early events even under good conditions with school and other related sport activities going on yet. Idk just a something I always thought and wondered about. Personally i would rather go out to catch one last race for the year while it is cold.

I'm kind of a weather geek. I could sit and watch reruns on the weather channel.

That being said, I can tell you from first-hand experience that the past 10 years, it appears we've been undergoing climate change where I'm located. Note I didn't say global warming.

The weather here used to be fairly predictable when scheduling dates and events. But since about 2007, the wheels fell off; as there's been lots of times in our 'dry season' that we've rained out event after event (July 4th event and mid-August, both in 2018)...then scheduled races where it should have been 'winter like' conditions...and it was sunny and 84 (Sprint Smackdown 2/10/17...and it was 70 for this year's Smackdown on 2/11).

Then, we've scheduled our Turkey Nationals where it was an ice storm the week before and the week after - and we got in the show, as scheduled on a 68 degree day, wedged in between those two winter storms.

On another year, we had the Turkey Nationals get froze out, and people were so disappointed because they were ready for a race, so I quick came up with a goofy named Stocking Stuffer 25 and booked it two weeks later - and it went off without a hitch in mid-60's weather around December 11...with a great race, field of cars and solid fan count.

Here's my bottom line.

Anymore, I just don't really worry about it when booking an event, as the 'new normal' is there really isn't a normal it seems.

It's either going to be good weather or bad weather, regardless of the calendar date. And we'll deal with it when it gets here.

But one thing's for sure. If you know there's going to be inclement weather on race night, or high storm risk or similar, it's probably just best to postpone or cancel as it's hard for the vast majority of fans to enjoy this sport in those elements - especially since it doesn't involve a stick or a ball...and I'll save my comments on that aspect of sporting events for another day.  wink

I think it is easy yo book and relatively cheap to promote a very early season event, and if you catch a break with weatther then you have a big winner and if weather is iffy to average,  you cancel early and hope for better luck next year.

I agree with Dman, the weather generally is not predictable at all.   I don't have a problem with tracks scheduling events early in the spring.   My bigger problem is tracks like Devils Bowl, who cancelled the 2nd night of the Spring Nationals a few years ago despite never having a drop of rain.

It's certainly possible to get a warm evening in the east/midwest in late March and early April. It was windy and cool at Port Royal saturday but the crowd wasn't bad($1100 50/50). I do agree that we start too early in central PA though.

Many times with a special show with a travelling series you have a difficult time finding an open date that works for both the series and the track(s). Take Eagle Raceway's Rumble in the Bullring for example. Since it was a 2-day event at 2 tracks the difficulty was doubled.

Let's face it; Mother Nature is bi-polar and off her meds right now!!

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.

Good luck trying to predict what the weather will be like here in Ohio when it comes to scheduling the next season's events. Typically when tracks are scheduling they are probably putting everything together in late September, October, November, and announce them in December.

Past few years at the first All Star races at Attica I have been able to wear shorts & fleece last year, jeans and a hoodie the year before that, and the year before that I needed a winter snow suit it was so cold. I have looked at weekly forecasts and it may look like the following weekend will be nice but then the following days it shows rain and a 15degree drop. This week we had snow monday morning, yesterday it was raining & 60degrees and we have flooding, and today we are back to windy & cold.

Even in late April I have left the track sunburnt from the sitting in the stands while the sun was out, to nearly getting frost bite the following year.
