Crawley Holds off Swindell to Claim NCRA Sprint Opener!

Park City, Kansas – March 30, 2018 - Tim Crawley of Benton, Arkansas out ran pole sitter Sammy Swindell to turn one on the opening lap and held on the rest of the way to claim the opening night of the eighth annual “Park City Cup/Air Capital Shootout” at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas on Friday night to open the 29th consecutive season for the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products.

With the original start waved off due to Matt Covington’s spin in turns three and four, the complete restart saw Crawley take the lead entering low between turns one and two. Swindell, Brian Brown, Blake Hahn and Daryn Pittman were the top five after lap one with Crawley jumping out to a quick six-car-length advantage.

Crawley and Sammy put a half-stretch distance on third place on back as they set a torrid pace out front with Crawley still maintaining a six-car-length advantage.

The second and final caution fell on lap seven when Covington again spun, this coming in turns one and two.

The final restart saw Crawley, the second time out this year aboard the Ronnie Pitts owned #1xx, utilized his Shark Racing Engines powered Triple X chassis deep into turns one and two and would hold off several challenges from Swindell the balance of the event to claim his first career NCRA victory and $1500 first place prize.

“I knew the track would take rubber, but I wasn’t sure how long it would take,” said Crawley. “We went out pretty tight and it got us to the front, then we just managed to hang on from there.  We were pretty tight the last six or seven laps but hey, we got’r done. Thanks to all of our sponsors: MPV Express, Fleming Electric, AC Sport, Southern Renovations, Speed Mart, West Little Rock Eye Care, Lawhon and Sons, All American Towing, ATM Trucking, Valvoline, Katzkin and XRG Graphics as well as car owner Ronnie Pitts for letting me wheel this thing!”

Coming out of turn four on the last lap, Sammy slid high trying to get around Crawley at the flag stand and barely held on to second by a half car length over Brown. Pittman came home fourth while Bergman rounded out the top five.

The first set of heat races for the forty-nine-car field were won by Swindell, Brown, Sam Hafertepe, Jason Martin and Jack Dover while the second set of heat races were won by Brown, Brandon Hawks, Swindell, Blake Hahn and Brant O’Banion.

Saturday night will wrap up the two-day “PCC/ACS” with another two sets of heat races, followed by last chance and the $13,000 to win championship finale. Gates will open at 4:00 PM with a special start time of 6:00 PM.

Wow great car count. ASCS national opener only had 30 or so.

Glad to see NCRA back in the game!

Guys like Swindell , Balig and Brown who race 41 0 and 360 regularily...do they just have a race ready car for each class or swap engines?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

I have to say you’re an interesting individual. There are threads you weigh in on with a long-time,veteran fans insight. While on other threads you sound as if you are a newbie with no knowledge of sprint car racing.  LOL

From talking to racers, it seems the successful racers have 2 separate cars. There is enough difference between a competitive 360 and a 410, weight being one of the major factors, that just dropping a 410 into a fast 360 might not cut it.

I'm not sure what constitutes a "seasoned fan". I've been a sprint car fan since 1973 and I'm still not that smart.

I guess sometimes my thoughts overlook the fact few guys race their own cars.where I raced you owned your own and paid your own. Could be many guys race for different owners when they change classes. My question kind of came from the thought that I wouldn't expect my crew to change motors every week.

Either way is correct.  Some drivers/owners will rent an engine for say a 360 show if they normaly run a 410.  I have heard a price of $1,000 a weekend.  If a team has both engine sizes but normally run a 410, my guess the 410 would stay in best chassis and a back up car would get the  360.  That is how I would do it.

Pittman drove the 31b owned by Brandon Berryman out of Texas.

You can tell an ass... but, you can't tell 'em much

He was sick on Friday night. Too sick to drive is what they reported on the Speed Shift broadcast. He did do a start and park in his second heat......ran just a couple laps. In that way, he qualified for a full payout for his finishinig position on Saturday night rather than just a 50% amount.

As for the racing itself.....the track sucked! Both nights. Single rubber down low groove both nights by the final heats and on through the features. Pretty obvious they don't know how to prep a track! I don't either, but I don't profess to be able to.....but somebody putting on an event like that sure as hell should be able to, or at least have someone who can available at the facility. Terrible show!

Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't order the broadcast the way it sounds.

Same here... i don't know jack about track prep, but I can tell if a race is good

I read guys here opinionating about track prep, don't know what to think. But I wonder if the arid conditions here in Colorado make it impossible... Also wonder about tracks that usually run modifieds. The ones in Upstate NY have been "follow the leader" every time I've gone, but Grandview is usually pretty good. Don't even get me started on Hagerstown....

I believe most fans that have been around for quite a while can usually get a feel for the track conditions very early on. And I, too, think it's okay we speak our minds. Even though this was from a broadcast perspective, to me the track looked way to dry right from the beginning. On Friday night the announcers were trying to sell the track as becoming multi-groove early on, when by the fourth heat (of five) all the drivers were beginning to abandon the top and move to the bottom. So I have no idea what the announcers thought they were seeing. Generally, once that happens, forget it. Track looked exactly the same at the beginning of Saturday's program as it did Friday's, so it was obvious to me that the show was going to be a yawner. A couple of the heats were decent with the format as is was, but that was all. The track actually went way earlier on Saturday. In the A Main Sammy moved from 9th to 5th, beyond that, there were about four other drivers that improved their positions by much at all. Not very good for a 30 lapper. I think TMac 17th to 11th, Pittman 16th to 9th, Ninehiser 23rd to 15th and Stasa 24th to 18th pretty well wraps up the movers. The leader from the flag barely made it to lapped traffic, so that tells a lot. Even the announcers did acknowledge that when it was done.

Well announcers have to pump up the crowd, right? They can't just say "This race sucks, see ya later"....

What gets me is when announcers constantly remind fans to get their "adult beverages".... if people want to drink, they will. Plus, when did "beer" become a dirty word??? wink....You know, like "&%$# Hill Gang"?
