Sprint car racing is more or less a national sport, but most of us watch it on a local level.  Some the racers who raced locally hit the big time. I live in Doug Wolfgang's hometown, and Danny Lasoski has a whole lot of Husets tropies in his garage.

My local track is Husets Speedway, which may one day rise from the ashes. There are two guys that I would consider to be local legends there- Terry McCarl and Mark Dobmeier.

McCarl has, I don't know, how many points championships and I believe is the leader on the all time winners list at the speedway. He has also done well (really well) at his home track of Knoxville Iowa.

Dobmeier has several points championships as well at Husests and a lot tropies as well. He's  had some big wins there too, including both of Puddin' Head's Silver Shootouts and a WoO race at Husets. He also does well (really well) at his home track of River Cities Speedway up in Grand Forks/ the other Dakota.

Who are some of the local legends in sprint car racing in your area? Please mention where you're located, It makes it easier to follow who's who.

Some other Local Legends of The now defunct Husets Speedway you may recall, though their biggest successes were waged in the 360 ranks within a 100 mile radius of Husets. They were Fran Bruns in the Rawhide Racing 18 rom Madison, SD (older brother of Bonzai Bruns and where Bonzai honed his skills to become a Fantastic WoO crew chief) and One of the Boys From Nunda Kenny Hansen...they waged some fantastic battles on the dirt in that area and fans either rooted for one or the other but rarely both. Another was the late Bill Rook, who, had he not tragically perished on Fathers Day at Husets in 1987, may well have hit the big time. All 3 have tons of wins in that area and are all Husets Hall of Fame members And could wheel a fire breathing winged sprinter like none other.

Oh Fran, great call, loved that red and white 18 car.  Not a  legend but Chuck  Swenson (spelling) in the X car too cool.  My fav was by far Lou Kennedy Jr 21k, again Jackson.  Ran a out dated chassis for so long but just kept winning.

western pa and eastern ohio.  wow were to begin. you had guys like, wise, quarterson, blaney, murphy, these guys in the 70's could race with anybody. i believe they all dabbed into usac. johnnie beaber followed and he would win everywhere. Then along came a group of guys that were good enough to go on the road. Dave Blaney, Brad Doty, Doty got his big chance because he towed into lernerville on friday nights. He caught the eye of a coal guy by the name of Bower's and was put in the best equipment and one of the best crew chiefs there was Tommy Sanders. Dave Blaney ran the all star deal in his Trevis built car and finally got his break in the Luna ford w Kenny Woodrift turning the wrenches. 2 local guys that had 2 of the best wrneches out there. I know Brad finished 2nd in points to, who else, SK 1 year. Blaney and Woodrift won the title. Then along came brother Dale, and tho most of his careeer was on the all start tour he has won his share of races and titles. The 2 young guys from back in that time period that could also race with them but had day jobs. Tim Schaffer and Eddie Lynch Jr.  Schaffer has won everything there is to win. One day he will be the discussion of being in the hall, I say yes. The 2L of jr. i think out of all, i hope someday he is considered for a spot in the hall. All the above mentioned drivers had great crew chiefs behind there every move. Eddie was never a points chaser, and he mite follow the outlaws, the all stars, or if it was early in the season head to central pa. the guy did everything, driver, crew chief, tire specialist. You name it. I believe he would have been a all star champ, he won many races with that group, he ran with the outlaws and won, and i think out on the road he would have given them all a run for there money.

If you tell someone in my area you are going to a sprint car race, they say "isn't that Monster Energy sponsored now?"

Shanefan and I may very well be the only sprint car fans in town---though he did not grow up here.  Almost every racing fan in town likes late models, modifieds, and/or Dale Earnhardt Jr.  Not a very well educated bunch!  Smile   I would bet less than 5% of all residents in my home town even know the name Sammy Swindell.   I take a variety of friends to races in the area (gotta drive 1.5-4 hours in any direction to see a race) but none of them follow it very closely.

Wish I had a track in the area----let alone a local legend!!!  Smile

(cool topic though Murphy--I was in your neighborhood in June.  We stayed overnight at the Sioux Falls KOA.  Had it planned out to stop through on a Saturday night and catch a race.  We all know how that played out for me)

Here in North Dakota it almost starts and ends with Knoxville Hall of Fame driver Don Mack though Dobmeier, a legend locally and also nationally known for winning a lot of features and a few championships at Knoxville and Husets but he can't be considered in the same category with Mack, one of the original WoO driver.   If not for retiring early to take over the family farm after his parents were tragically killed in a car accident, who knows what more he might have done in racing.

He mostly drove the #4 Rydell Chevy Special for Doug and Joanne Howells and among major wins are the 1977 and 78 Florida 500, the 1978 Little 500 and the 1976 Golden 200. Though he is from East Grand Forks, MN, across the river from Grand Forks,  we in ND think of him as one of ours.  His chief rival in North Dakota was Dave Skari.  They had some tremendous battles at tracks around the midwest especially in West Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot, ND.  Sadly Skari, in his prime, was killed in a bad accident at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo in 1974.  Don Mack continues to promote racing at the raciest sprint car track in the U.S. in Grand Forks, ND.  Just ask Johnny Gibson.

Jees Louise, phone rang and I got up to answer it (landline) and while talking, reached over and clicked "post", forgot to finish the above post.  The greatest modern day sprint car driver in history is a North Dakota driver, Donny Schatz from Minot originally and now living in the Fargo area.  I don't care about the Schatz haters,  Schatz is already a living legend.  His record in today's sprint car world where everyone can have the same equipment is astounding.  The statistics are absolutely amazing. Then to top it off, he's the cleanest driver out there and constantly over and over gives all the credit to his team.  Wolfgang said in his book that in the 80s him, Kinser and Swindell won almost all the WoO races because they had the best equipment.  Sure they were great drivers, fantastic drivers, but Schatz is alone at the very top.

I'll keep my response local to Jackson Raceway, MN and the annual races at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, IA., and I'm going back a few years. Darryl Dawley was my all time favorite in that era.  He came from the old modified ranks and transitioned to the sprint cars in the early '70's.  Among that same group of drivers there was Vic Dicks, Jim Edgington, Marv DeWall, Jack McCorkell, Bob Geldner and a slew of others that opened the door for drivers like Doug Wolfgang to come join and conquer the world in a sprint car. The Jackson Raceway locals I mention also ruled the Clay County Fair Modified races and destroyed the Knoxville Raceway "Super Modefied" drivers when they ventured to the Clay County Fair in the late '60's and early '70's. The sprint races at the Clay County Fair in those days was controlled by the IMCA. And while the locals didn't venture in to the IMCA ranks at that time, the IMCA guys would often race their cars with the local modifieds. And the modifieds more than held their own. The Jackson Raceway HAll of Fame Facebook page provides a great look down memory lane. Check it out.....you'll enjoy it.

Every State that races sprint cars has local legends. PA just has too many for me to list. CA has tons also starting from or before the Legion Ascot days. Many Indy winners came from CA.

Northwestern OH (Attica/Millstream/Fremont area) has quite a few good ones as well.I wasn't able to see some of them race myself because I'm too young. But anyways, Jim Linder, Mark Keegan, and currently still racing but definitely a legend Byron Reed to name a few. Really a complete list can be found at http://www.fremontspeedwayhof.com/ (It can speak better than I can).
