Anybody else going to ASCS races at Calhan, Co. (El Paso County Speedway) this weekend?

Sammy's supposed to be there...

I went to this track once, racing was strictly huggy bottom, follow the leader.... but I'm gonna give them another chance, might as well support rare Colorado sprint car event

Supposed to rain Friday afternoon, I'll probably skip that & go Saturday... but who knows, rain might improve conditions in this arid part of the USA???

I'll be down there for both nights cause I live NE Co springs so not much of drive.  Looks like rain today but Saturday we should be fine. Last years WOO show was okay IMO.  I'm wondering about the car count tho.

The promoter said that 20 cars were signed in last night before the rains came.

He is going to make a decision at 10 am today on whether they will try to run last nights show at 2 pm and tonights at 6,  or just one show at 5 tonight.  (some divisions were only supposed to run heats last night and features tonight)

Thanks for the update! I saw on the Net last nite they were starting at 2, now I'm gonna call before I drive down there (1hr 45 min. from Denver)

2 shows starting at 2pm doesn't make sense to me.... will the track hold up?

He decided that two shows didn't make much sense either.   His paraphrased quote from Facebook is that they didn't want to ruin the track for the night show in order to out on a 2 pm show for 300 people.

Support divisions start at 5,  sprint cars at 6.

Yep, just called myself (old school!)

Makes sense, glad I didn't drive down Friday!

I remeber why I haven't been there in over a year.

too damn many support classes + dry Colorado air + the promoters philosophy on what make a good dirt track = a road trip and hotel room if I want to see great racing

Yea, too many support classes. Track was better than my first visit, there was some passing, but not a lot.

Some of the support class racing was OK, I was tempted to stay after ASCS races, but first yellow on first support class feature (what were they anyway, Legends?, Dwarfs?) prompted me to get an early start on the 2 hr. drive back to Denver.

" a road trip and hotel room if I want to see great racing"..... yep, I think I get spoiled by cherry picking the best races on my cross country drives & summers back East (Eastern Storm, Pa. Speedweek, USAC eastern midget tour, Indiana sprint week, etc.)

Only saw one antelope on the drive down this time, tho there were some smaller animals mixed with a herd of cattle in the distance that were probably antelopes....

I think they called them dwarfs and I almost stayed for their feature since they had plenty of cars,  but also decided to beat the crowd and was back in Morrison by 10:05.     I had the feeling that the slick track would bring an abundance of cautions.    I am pretty sure that I made the right call,   they were on their second or third yellow when I was driving out.

I might have stayed if other support classes were on first.... LMs, Lightning Sprints & 270s weren't too bad

On other threads, people complain about announcers... this guy didn't even say which class was running, if it was  heat, feature, anything

A comparison with racing in other parts of the USA,....50/50  winner brought home a MASSIVE $157!!! Last time I saw Sammy win, upstate NY Allstar race, 50/50 exceeded winner's purse, over $7,000
