I have been to Eldora in the late 80's and early 90's. It was badass! But after watching The Bristol challenges on Dirt That was scary fast. Lets get the ball rolling on this one. By the way Sammy was amazing both times there. Sammy and The Jet put on a helluva show back in the day!

Bristol is larger than Eldora. You can't go by lap times without taking the difference in the length of the tracks in consideration.

Very true, but lap times are a measure of quickness not necessarily speed

Bristol is .566 miles around the bottom (pavement).  More comparable in size to Knoxville than Eldora (banking is comparable to Eldora).

Scary Fast -- that's a second faster than Tatnell's record at Knoxville (Which IMO will not be broken in the next 10 years), and how long ago was Bristol,  1997 maybe??  Horsepower and speeds have increased since then (even with the weight rule now, odds are is they would break that record Sammy has if they ever did it again).

The shame of it is,  Eldora now is kept at speeds for sprints that used to be run by the Eldora Street Stocks.  Hotlap times for NW sprints at the Sprintacular were high 19s. low 20s.  Wings were running NW speeds of the 80s and 90s. 15s-16s.  They overpack it and cut any cushion that builds up.

Sad too because I watched the NW show at Portsmouth Raceway Park this year and they were just flying.  Track in 101* didn't take rubber all night with SPrints, LM's Mods, SS and Bombers on it.  (Tracks simular size to Eldora)  The fans loved it too!

Correct it isn't, it's like a big 3/8 mile track

the answer to the thread is Eldora before Tony ruined Earl Baltes's masterpiece and took banking out of the top and put it in the bottom toward the middle for pickup truck races, I will always wonder why Tony ruined the mystique of Eldora by doing that but hey Tony knows best!!!!!     If you really know Eldora then you know the place is ruined cause instead of the men seperating from the boys the way Earl had it, now every swinging dick rides the wall cause it's lost it's banking so much....... anybody else notice when you look and see the wall now it's almost as tall as privacy fence cause the banking is trashed

I'd imagine you are referring to the sprintacular where the times you mention are accurate (which doesn't mean it was a bad race). If you go back to the 4 crown held just a few weeks earlier the times were what you'd expect at Eldora. Friday nite the WoO feature times were in the high 13's and Saturday the ASCOC feature was low 14's with USAC in the mid 16's.

Bristol. And I think the facts show that. Eldora's record set by Dollansky in 2002, 12.707/141mph was not a measured record. Like most 1/2 mile tracks, the size 1/2 mile is a generic number. Eldora is actually .44 of a mile. (another example is Volusha...considered 1/2 but measures out at .435)  So to use Dollansky's time and equate it to a 1/2 mile distance is not accurate at all. On the other hand, Swindell's record at Bristol in 2000, 13.860/138.442mph was a measured record. The track measured out at .55 of a mile. (The day before the race in practice Sammy ran an unofficial time and speed of 13.60/141.088).

Has nothing to do with dirt but about 8 or 9 years ago they had a winged sprint car driver by Jason or Chad Blonde, a stock car, a hobby stock or street stock?, a motorcycle (motorsickle as Junior Johnson called them), a stock street Mustang, and something else do laps around the cement at Bristol to see how fast they could do a lap.  Blonde did 145 and change average speed.  Forget what the motorcycle did it but remember it wasn't one of the superfast bikes back then.  Can't compare dirt to cement though.

Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

I thought nascar measures track 15 feet from outside of wall, here is why comparing lap time to MPH  is relative,

I remember when that happened, but there is still a big difference if what I heard was correct.   Those cars that were brought in, including Blonde, got to run on Bristol with the full banking.    I had heard that when they hauled the dirt in for the Outlaws that they graded some of that banking out of it, like upwards of 10 degrees.    I'm not sure that's entirely correct, but maybe someone who knows for sure can enlighten us?

Bristol for sure as it is over 1/2 mile in size and Eldora is less than 1/2 mile if measured in same position on track as Bristol.  Just because a track is listed as a half mile or 3/8 th mile does not mean they really are so lap times mean nothing to compare speeds.

Your memory is pretty darn good. Not quite 10 degrees but close. The concrete is corners 26-30 degrees...straights 6-10 degrees. when they dropped the dirt on it the corners went to 22-24 degrees and the straights were 9 degrees. I think it was 14,000 loads to cover it.
